dxomark reviews the E-M5

I see; definitely from an IQ performance value proposition the Pentax Kx is one of the best out there ...that's why I bought one a few years ago :)

The Kx is a very good camera, but it is an entry level camera and as such does not have some of features included in more advanced cameras such as the K5 and OM-D EM-5. That's why, IMHO the price comparison between K5 and OM-D is more appropriate.

Would you say a more appropriate comparison would be to price a K5 with a Pentax 16-50 with the weatherproofing?

From B&H:

K5 = $879 US
Pentax 16-50mm - $1421 US (!)

Now the difference is in favour of the EM-5. You could argue to buy a used 16-50mm but then it's not quite like for like is it? You could substitute the K5 for the K30 and save $80.

You can use FF lenses on M43 using the myriad of lens adapters. Granted, it has a different 'look' than originally intended, but you do have the flexibility to use Pentax K mount lenses on a M43 body if you so choose.

Anyway, all this APS-C vs M43 talk seems to take a life of the APS-C vs FF debate. They all take good pics. I would not choose a camera based on sensor size.

The Micro-4 thirds lens lineup is very strong if you are into primes. I have used Pentax, Zeiss, and Leica lenses, and the Olympus and Panasonic m43 primes e.g. 12mm f2, 20mm f1.7 and they are on par or exceed those of the traditional SLR lenses. In addition they are supremely compact..pictures and measurements don't do justice in terms of the difference in handling between the two. If you are not into primes and prefer zooms, perhaps m43 not as compelling a lineup as the Pentax K mount, though the new X primes from Panasonic should address that (still vaporware at the moment).

Fujifilm X10 firmware: Appears not to fix 'white orbs'

The orbs aren't present in every frame; in fact out of the thousand or so exposures, can probably count on one hand the number of pictures with orbs. It is very disappointing, however, especially given the price premium for a P&S camera.

Someone mentioned that a Nex 5n is just $100 more. The 5n was very much in contention but for me the X10 won with its manual zoom f2-f2.8, hotshoe, abundance of controls, and adequate ISO range (the 5n is superior, but lacks the native glass to truly take advantage of it). ISO 800 on the X10 is actually quite decent for a small sensor cam.

New Cameras....What are Your Plans?

I have an Olympus EPL1, and indeed at ISO 200-400, IQ is perfectly fine and rivals my Pentax Kx, but the Kx is still the winner because of its good DR. The newer M43 sensors are better than the EPL1, but I keep hearing the DR is still not as good as the APS-C even at low ISO settings. On the EPL1, I would strongly prefer not to shoot past ISO800 but as you had pointed out, the Olympus lenses have a stop advantage in speed which helps with the high ISO tradeoff. Still, in low-light situations, the Pentax Kx usually gets the nod in these cases.

Indeed, there are lots of nice cameras being released.

The Fuji X-Pro1 looks to be a very promising system. The lenses are fast and small and actually reasonable in price at about $600 a piece. It remains to be seen if the lens performance is up to snuff. Not sure if I can swallow the price of the body though I hear Fuji will be releasing other bodies in the future.

The new Olympus E-M5 looks very well executed, and at a body only price of about $1k compares well with the other micro four thirds bodies, but not so much against, say, a Pentax K5 since there is a premium to the small bodies (admittedly the K5 is a 1+ year old model, but it is another weather proof camera). I really like the prime lenses in the micro four thirds system; so I just got the cheapest m43 body (EPL1) to get the privilege of using those lenses.

As nice as a compact system is, I still enjoy using the Pentax Kx. It offers a lot better IQ past ISO800 than m43 and much more responsive. Ideally, something like a Pentax K-01 with a built-in EVF would come out so I'm waiting.

Not just cameras, but also lens size. These are tradeoffs that the consumer must weigh and decide given their individual situations.

An f2 lens is an f2 lens since it takes focal length into account. While some are interested in creating wide angle images with blurry backgrounds, others are interested in the flexibility for light gathering ability; in any case, the trade off here is for size/cost/weight which is the whole point of the use of smaller sensors.

There is a 24mm equivalent f2 M4/3 lens available that's under $1k and it's AF (fast and silent too!)
Yes going full frame does give you a few more options (Canon, Nikon, Sigma) but the OEMs cost more than $1k.

I can see though that a fast 35mm equivalent is not available for 'crop' sensors unless you're willing to mount a 24mm 1.4/2.0 on your APS-C.

My feeling is that the current manufacturers of FF will want to protect full frame as part of the upgrade path, and not use it in cameras to compete against the M4/3rds, 1's, the G1x's, and the Nex's. I just don't see anyone willing to give up the margin of a FF camera to compete at the lower margin high volume markets. Imagine, a FF mirrorless camera at $500 in today's price; that would basically squeeze out the current players of ILCs with small sensors. A new player, such as Pentax, could introduce FF, but I would think they would introduce it as an upgrade path to APS-C models.

Absolutely. I use a 20mm Panasonic lens on an Olympus Epl1.

You should be aware that the Panasonic 20mm and 25mm have been reported to be noisier on Olympus cams than Olympus lenses as the aperture opens or closes down depending on the amount of light coming into the sensor to control the Live View brightness. There's a lot of clicking as it opens and closes; it happens on my lens, but doesn't bother me.

Isn't the big problem with the OM-D the fact that it's going to cost a HUGE amount? Why not just get a proper SLR instead? The advantage of the K-01 is that it's a quirky design with fantastic IQ for enthusiast users in a cheap package. This is a quirky design with fantastic IQ at reasonable ISOs for apparently semi-pro users. M43 was never meant to be an expensive system. Olympus failed with professional 4/3 systems in the past, and they were absolutely stunning cameras, fantastic in almost every way.

What's the point in the OM-D? People can't even bring themselves to accept that APS-C can deliver for professionals, nevermind M43.

This, much more so than the K-01, is an example of form over... well, common sense I guess. And at the price this thing will cost, form alone might not cut it. It may have class leading AF, fabulous build quality, amazing lenses and awesome manual controls, but then it's design is clearly intended to make it look retro, rather than functional, so it's already lost a notch there.

Agh, I just wished the OM-D was going to be a more sensible camera, rather than such an expensive one :[

I believe it's rumored to be $1200 in price; it does appear to be quite expensive when you can pick up a K5 for less (mind you the K5's initial price was more than the OM-D). Oh well, guess I have to wait a couple of years before the price becomes more reasonable :)

The amount of glass on that (still not announced) 75mm 1.8 is impressive. It looks so much larger than the 12mm f/2 and 45mm f1.8.

Manual SLR lenses on D-SLR or Mirrorless

Hard to say how the manual lenses will work with the rumored mirrorless Pentax DSLR since there's little details on what the camera will be like; specifically, what the viewfinder experience is going to be.
However, Adam's link will let you know how the current crop of DSLRs work with manual lenses.

It's nice to see that Olympus is continuing their homage to the past. While Fuji has been headlining their retro style cams since the X100, people forget that Olympus started all this with the EP1 and its very similar styling to the Olympus Pens of old.

I just picked up an EPL1, 12mm f/2 and 20mm 1.7 lenses. The lenses are such a difference from the DSLR world and handle like jewels. Look forward to this new body. While I doubt I will be one of the first in line for the OM-D or whatever its called, I will be following it very closely.

Yes, the lenses are what make the system...I can definitely live with the nice small 35/1.4 and 18/2 covering an APS-C sized sensor. The body actually doesn't do much for me...not that much smaller than a DSLR and expensive...however Fuji has indicated there will be other bodies on the way...one can hope that they will be smaller and less costly.

Of course, the lens tests/reviews will bear out whether those lenses can deliver wide open...

The lack of CES announcements doesn't bother me, nor do the lack of 'rumors' of pending new releases deter me. I'm confident the K mount will continue for the foreseeable future; how it will continue, we can only wait and see. Pentax doesn't strike me as the company that would come out with new hardware at the rate of say Fuji has in the past year or so with their X line.

Had a listen to a Nex 5 and imho it is not exactly quiet. In fact, it sounds just about as loud as a regular DSLR.
The mirrorless interchangeable cams like Nex and M4/3rds use focal plane shutters which are relatively loud...if you want quiet, then you need to use leaf shutters like the Fuji x10 and X100, or Canon G series cams.

True Need for Wide Angle, or Just LBA?

Review your kit; are all those lenses untouchables? Could one or two be sold to fund your wide angle?

Ask yourself what it is you want to take pictures of and build your kit around that; unless money is not a problem, you will need to focus your kit around that.

For example, I am wondering about that Tamron 70-200mm -- can that be sold to fund the wide angle; if you really need the focal length from 100-200mm, perhaps a cheaper alternative such as a DA 55-300 or a manual focus lens will substitute and the remaining funds go towards your wide angle?

Just an idea..

Fuji X10 vs Canon S100

Personally would lean towards the X10 with its manual zoom, overall better external controls (IMHO), hotshoe, and faster lens.
It also includes an adapter to put 52mm filters.

The pluses on the Canon S100 is price, size/weight and GPS.

I hope the X10 is more responsive than the typical P&S digital camera; the IQ so far looks promising.

Too early to tell which has the edge in IQ...

haven't noticed the problem on my copy. Using a Pentax Kx. I would clean the contacts, both on camera and lens, and then if that doesn't help, try the warranty route.

Perhaps it's OOF. And the review also raised the possibility of QC issues as well.

However, in my experience, it is a stretch to say that shooting with the lens wide open is sharp, so the results were not completely surprising.

Pentax 31mm Lenstip Review

There is a review of the FA 31mm on LensTip.com - lens review, lenses reviews, lens specification - Lenstip.com. I like their reviews since they measure things that other websites don't such as astigmatism, coma, and autofocus.

However, I see their point about the value proposition of the FA31 relative to the competition, and in general, they were not seemingly impressed by the lens overall.

They don't really comment much on the +'s that the forums speak much about such as the smooth bokeh.

I doubt the review will change the minds of those who love the lens but I am somewhat puzzled that the review is at odds with the general consensus of the lens within the online community. And the website does mention that this lens was not the first Pentax lens that did not test well, but was well regarded.

I hope to join this club very soon. Will likely get a Leitax mount for an Olympus 90mm f/2 Macro. There aren't any instructions on the Leitax site specifically for this lens, but David Llado is thinking it's going to work fine.

For now, I'm testing the lens out with my C*non and hope to get it mounted on my Kx real soon. Can't wait!
