Step away from the focus charts. Set your camera to 0 correction and go take pictures.
The DOF of a 15mm lens is measured in meters, even up close at f/4 (actually, 0.8meters at one meter distance). At 30 meters and f/5.6 it is effectively infinite. I don't think there's anyway to accurately test and calibrate a lens like this.

These are full manual flashes, so the PTTL bounce flash issues won't affect you. Your best bet for learning manual flash is probably Strobist
Work through the Strobist 101 posts and you'll have a good idea what to expect.

Ah, I missed that in your original post. All I can think of is a full reset (there are two reset options, do them both) and if that doesn't work re-install the firmware. After that I got nuthin.

Spend some time exploring photos you like on a site like Flickr, or even here: PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery - Pentax User Photo Gallery
Most of the pics will have the exposure information available, so you can see directly what settings the photographer used to create the pictures you like.

I've found focus peaking to be of limited use with wide angle lenses. I use the one-press zoom function, it works great.

I think Kunzite is talking about the medium-format market - the 645D with full DSLR controls at half the price shook that market hard.

Make sure you're not using Auto ISO - that makes the K-01 default to Av mode. You have to set the ISO to a set number.

I had the box for the 18-55WR sitting on my desk, so I checked, and sure enough, "Printed in Jappan"

Nice shots, toothpick. To my eye with the original and #2 and 3 the zebra is clearly aware he's being watched, with 1 and 4 it's not clear, maybe an 'ambush' instead of a stand off.
The cloning tool could expand those bushes and cover the house, just sayin...

Try some shots of the sky with a wide angle lens at f16 or f22, it it appears in the same spot then it's some type of gunk on the sensor.
It could be a bug - telephoto lenses bring out all sorts of things under the right conditions: 120530GangRanch037 by Peter Colapinto, on Flickr
