I bought an Olympus E-P3 a couple months ago (and I have the Panasonic Summilux 25mm 1.4 for it too). It's a very nice camera (and lens), but I miss the optical viewfinder and dSLR-like handling. Using it still "feels" like using a P&S - even though the quality of the photos is better. I think it's just a psychological thing. I miss having a dSLR. :)

I did give thought to the 15 vs the 21. I thought the 15 would be better for interiors. I think if I broke-down and went with 4 lenses instead of 3, the 21 would be the one I add.

Nuff, what ND10 are you using? It looks like a good one, no color-cast. Also, is a screw-in type? Or are you holding it in front of the lens?

Thanks for the input everyone!

It seems pretty unanimous that the FA31 and FA77 trump the DA35 and DA70. I know there are trade-offs... but the faster aperture seems to be the way to go. Especially if the size difference isn't that bad. I know the FA31 is the largest of all these lenses (and the odd-lens-out regarding filter size), but I think it's probably right at the edge of "small enough" for me.

About the DA21... I was thinking about the it a bit (either w/ the FA31 or the FA43), but I think I'd miss the wider angle of the DA15.

Did I grab you with the catchy title? :D

So, I'd like some feedback. I'm pretty close to picking up a new K-5. I used to have a K-7 but didn't like the AF, high-ISO performance or potential issues with SDM lenses, so I sold it and bought a d300s. Since then, my photo-interests have changed and I just sold the d300s and am thinking about the K-5. My desire for super-fast AF and "pro-level" zoom lenses has pretty much faded, to be replaced with the desire for a smaller body and a few primes (that d300s was HEAVY!).

I'm mostly interested in a small, light travel kit. I'm thinking a set of three primes. I have a nice small Domke bag (made for Leicas or Micro 4/3rd) that would work perfect for a K-5 body and three primes (with a bit of room to spare).

(I had been thinking about a d7000 too, but the lens options for primes in DX-friendly focal lengths are far less appealing.)

So, if going with a K-5...

For the wide, I've pretty much settled on the DA15 Limited. Seems like a no-brainer.

For the mid/normal, I'm thinking the FA31. But the DA35 Limited looks appealing too. (I thought about the Sigma 30, but I think it's too large and heavy.)

For a short-tele, I can't decide if an FA77 or a DA70 Limited would be the way to go.

Does anyone have a strong opinion of those two FAs vs those two DAs as travel lenses? Are the DAs more versatile due to better control of CA? Or do the faster apertures make up for that (for low-light and shallow DoF)? I don't have much of a desire to shoot macro, but I do like shooting close-ups of objects (which is why I'm considering the DA35). Is the FA31 too large? The price difference isn't that big of a deal - I'd be fine shelling out for the FAs if I thought they were what I really wanted.

(I'd probably throw a 50-300 in my suitcase as well - depending on the destination (my brother has one from his K-X kit, but he just bought a d7000, so he won't be needing it), but only bring it along for the day if I was planning on going somewhere where I know I'd want it - like for wildlife excusions or something.)

Thanks,
Greg

I'm trying to get an idea of how large the Sigma is. I know how large the FA31 and many of the DA Ltds. are. I want to keep my kit small (for traveling) so I'm trying to figure out the trade-offs of going with a smaller-slower lens vs. a larger-faster lens. I know the Sigma is larger than the others, but I'd like to see it next to some of those others.

Would anyone be able to take a photo of this lens sitting on a table next to an FA31 and one or two DA Limited primes? And a photo of it mounted to a K-7 or K-5?

Item for Sale
Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC

Asking Price
380

Item Location
Rochester, NY, USA

Item Description
This lens is in pristine condition. It seems perfect, optically, and it focuses quickly and accurately (with occasional minor hunting in low-light, which as I understand is a trait of this lens in general). It comes with both caps, a hood, a very nice padded case and the original box and warranty cards.

I'm the second owner. The first owner switched to Nikon FF and sold all his Pentax stuff. And now I find myself switching to Nikon as well.

Note: the Pentax version of this lens is not HSM - it's screw-drive.

For now, I'll only ship within the U.S.

Here's a photo taken with the lens - only very minor exposure and contrast adjustments.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax K-7 with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 AL WR lens

Asking Price
$850 USD

Item Location
Rochester, NY, USA

Item Description
I bought this K-7/18-55mm lens kit back in July. Since then, I've hardly used it - the camera has less than 1000 actuations on the shutter (about 950). The camera and lens are both in pristine condition - I don't think you'd be able to tell them from brand new. They've never seen rain or snow or anything like that. They've never been dropped, bumped or even handled roughly. I still have the box and everything that came in it (strap, manual, cables, etc.).

I'm also including an extra battery (not a Pentax brand, purchased on ebay, has worked perfect so far for me), as well as an IR remote control (also non-Pentax brand, purchased on ebay, has a range of about 10-15 feet outdoors). Note: No SD cards included.

I WILL NOT separate the body and the lens.

I'll only ship to U.S. addresses. If it doesn't sell, I'll think about other countries.

Couldn't have said it better. These ARE (supposedly) their "pro-level" lenses after all.

I guess that's the best way of looking at it. I can see how much extended warranties are on various sites, but does anyone know the SDM replacement cost for an out-of-warranty lens?

I've read a lot of good things about the Square Trade warranties. Are they only offered through Amazon? (Good thing Amazon has good prices and return policy.)

Unfortunately, I've read mixed (but more bad than good) reviews of B&H's SageMax plans.

Looks like a good thing. But I'd like to see a "1-click-like" for posts. I hate waiting for the little popup window and then having to click the button in the window too. I seldom "like" posts because of it.

I do want to believe!! But I see a review on Amazon - someone purchased a 50-135 in Feb 2010 and just updated her review to report an SDM failure. Plus two other reviews on there reporting SDM failure - one purchased in 2008, failed in 2009, so that could be from an "old batch" - and one review written in Jan 2010 reporting two failures (the second being the replacement for the first) - but no dates were specified.

What the heck is a sawbuck? :D

Hey all,

I'm really being torn in two by my desire to buy a DA* 50-135. On paper it's perfect. Seeing the https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/106166-da%2A-5...at-can-do.html thread makes me drool. But the whole SDM issue just won't seem to go away!! It's SO frustrating.
:hmm:

I'd also eventually like the DA* 16-50 and DA* 60-250.

So, has anyone purchased an SDM lens recently? If so, are you just hoping that the SDM issue is fixed? Did you purchased an extended warranty (which one)? Do you just not care if it breaks?

I've seen this thread: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/126676-my-16-5...ive-motor.html... it sounds good... but...

Why doesn't Pentax just pull their head out and give people some info?!?! Don't they realize how frustrated people are?!?! They must be loosing so much business due to not letting people know what's going on with the SDM issue.

(How much does it cost to get the SDM fixed if your warranty is over?)

All Pentax DA and DA* lenses have a green stripe. (D FA have silver stripe instead. DA* also have gold stripe.)

K-5 CA/PF evaluation....

I just wanted to post these photos as an illustration of the difference between PF and CA. This photo was taken with a K-7 and DA70 Limited at f2.4. First, the full-image:

Then some crops showing PF:

The last image also shows CA if you look at the holes in the brake-disc as well as the areas around the spokes of the wheels. You can see it as orange and blue glows on opposite edges.

Overall, the CA is barely noticeable. And was easily correctable in Lightroom. The PF is pretty bad though.

If the K-5 "emphasizes" PF more than the K-7, I'd hate to see what this image would have looked like if taken with a K-5.

(Is the DA70 known as having more PF than other lenses?)

DA Limiteds vs. FA Limiteds

Being the OP, the first 4 or 5 pages made me feel like I made a snow-ball and started it rolling uncontrollably down the mountain. :) But I think in these last few pages I've really been able to zero-in on the "real-life" differences between the two series.

So thanks for hashing it out so "thoroughly". :)
(Not that you need my thanks...)

I had a DA70 but wasn't super-happy with it. It sounds like the FA77 might fit me better, even though it's a bit more $$$.

And it sounds like I might want to try a DA40 eventually and see how it stacks up against the Sigma 30 I have (A fast, but rather large lens, with no quick-shift and AF that tends to hunt a bit).

DA Limiteds vs. FA Limiteds

So, I've seen very nice photos taken with both in both the FA and DA Limited club threads. But what are the major differences between them and the DA Limiteds?
(I guess I'm mainly comparing FA 31, 43, 77 to DA 21, 35, 40, 70.)

What I know so far:
FA = more $$$
FA = larger maximum aperture
FA = can be used on full-frame/35mm cameras
DA35 = macro, so maybe not good in include in comparison?

I've read something about the FA not being "designed for" digital sensors, but I don't really understand what that means - technically or in real-world situations.

Anything else?
