K-5 with A/M lenses

I found the same thing using M42 S-M-C 50/1.4. I also used to have K-x and my recollection is that the color cast wasn't nearly so pronounced on that body. It's corrected easily enough, but the K-5 needs more compensation - another thing to fiddle with when using the lens.. Just out of interest, anyone have a theory why WB is affected by what lens you have on?

My Eye-Fi Pro X2 card, which had been causing random "memory card error" on 1.01, now seems to be working on 1.02. Early days yet, but here's hoping..

K5 and eye-fi card

Just been testing K-5 firmware 1.02 with my Pro x2 card. The card had been causing "Memory Card Error" message on firmware 1.01, but after upgrading the camera to 1.02, it began working immediately. I have not touched anything on the Eye Fi card, or card related software on the PC.

Early days yet, as I've only been playing with it an hour or so, but that's already longer than what it managed with 1.01. I've got my finger crossed...

How AE affects burst rate?

Thanks everyone for your input. I considered those mentioned issues such as shutter speed, etc. However, ManuH and simico's post explains what I was experiencing. What I described in my original post was indeed indoors and during the evening. I guess I never tried burst shooting under dim light, and was unfamiliar with this factor. I guess I should have thought about the fact that metering would take longer in dim light..:o

I'm glad to be able to say I received my replacement body today, serial #395xxxx. No stains. I'm in Sydney, Australia, and I was very impressed with Digital Fun Stuff, where I bought my unit from. They are only a small shop, but they were completely fuss-free and very prompt with their communication and actions. It only took a couple of emails (both replied to within a couple of hours) and a photo showing the problem (and mine wasn't as bad as some I've seen around). They rang Pentax the same day and confirmed it will be replaced, and that they will notify me as soon as they have unaffected stock. I got an email notificaiton yesterday, and today I have the new body. Credit also to the local importer, C R Kennedy, for their part.

How AE affects burst rate?

Just got my replacement body (stain issue on the first), and while running it through it's paces, came across something I hadn't noticed while using the previous body, and just wanted to double check here..

I can't seem to get burst rate of 7fps unless I lock AE (or full manual, of course), and I definitely did not have to lock AE on my previous body. I know features like lens correction and D-Range affect burst rate when on, but I made sure these are off. The exif shows camera came with firmware 1.01 already loaded.

It is possible that I had the "AE lock with AF" menu option turned on on the last body, but I don't recall doing this, nor would I have found that desirable. Can somebody comment or do a burst test with AE not locked and tell me what they get? Thanks..

K5 and eye-fi card

No, I don't think I've found anything special. By "initialise" I mean I just delete the hidden eye-fi directory on the card, and plug into the PC for the software to re-initialise the card. So far, it has worked for me each time, but not for very long.. I have also lost shots I thought I had a couple of times..

I'm going to be patient and wait for the next card firmware update (or perhaps the next K5 firmware??), but not sure I will perservere after that..

K5 and eye-fi card

IF anyone has K-5 and Eye-Fi Pro/X2 card combination working consistently, can you share your setup/knowhow, please.

I have K5 Firmware 1.01, latest Eye-Fi card firmware and Eye-Fi helper 3.2.4, and often get Memory Card Error. After (re)initialising, the card works ok for a time (including file transfers), then seemingly randomly causes memory card error. This can be on power up, or during use between shots. Once I get this error, it sometimes recovers after powering the camera off then on again, but more often needs to be re-initialised.

Any suggestions?

18-135mm Reviews anyone?

Lol, thanks for the tips, guys. I do know most of the facts you mention, and perhaps I should have guessed there would be criticisms despite the disclaimer of "quick and dirty".. I guess I was a bit excited after seeing the impressive results. Just a few explanations for what it's worth:
1. I dislike flash intensely for indoor shots. I also wanted a clean image which was the reason for ISO200, which then meant that to get a fast enough shutter speed, I had to underexpose. I can do this knowing K-5's dynamic range.
2. Regarding focus speed asked about, I believe the favourable comparison is to other SDM lenses, not internal focus motor of K-5. Additioanally, there is an even bigger gap when using live view contrast detect.
Despite the failings of my test methods, I think the lens does extremely well against a prime..

Just got this lens. Quick and dirty test, against my DA35mm Macro Limited. Very rough setup, I know, but gives some idea against a benchmark lens. My untrained eye has a hard time distinguishing the results.. Perhaps a little more vivid colour from the Macro Limited, but I don't really see a difference in sharpness (at this aperture and focal length, anyway). Even the bokeh looks similar, don't you think?

The DC motor is a tad slower than the DA35Macro (certainly not slow, though), and manual focus feels tight and well damped but not quite creamy like the limited lens (let alone a Takumar). On the flip side, it is almost silent in comparison and what sound there is, is more refined.

Shot with K-5: Under-exposed by 4 stops using ISO 200, then push-developed in ACR. Both at 35mm (exif says 36mm for the DA18-135), F4.5, 1/45.

DA35mm Macro then DA18-135, followed by 100% crops. (Note Web upload seems to modify the files - the originals look even closer than they appear here..)

k-r or k-x?

I've been using a K-x for the last 12 months and just got myself a K-5. Personally, I don't find the lesser LCD nor lack of focus position confirmation a deal-breaker for the K-x. Only the focus speed and reliability makes a difference in taking pictures. If you need to do any kind of action photos, I would suggest K-r which, while probably not upto the level of a K-5, is reputed to be significantly improved in focus performance (Live view focusing is on another level also). On the other hand, if moving subject is not your priority, K-x will do just fine. It's a prettier camera too! I miss the chrome highlight around the body..

K-5 Firmware Suggestions

Haven't seen this mentioned above, so..

I was a bit surprised to find that Info Screen color scheme is not saved with USER modes. It would be handy to know which of the 5 modes you are in, just by the color scheme.

Also, custom button mappings (indeed all settings) should revert back to what it was prior to entering user mode, when you exit the user mode.. On mine (V1.01), I have shutter half-press disabled in one of my user modes, but it stays disabled when I exit to P, Av or other modes.. Mind you, some other settings seem to revert correctly, so this could be a bug?

K-5 WB with Takumar 50mm/1.4

Thanks - I know about this setting, and have played with it. My curiosity was more to do with why K-5 would seemingly render the colors differently between lenses (esp shift in green/magenta axis)? I'd like to hear from anyone with M42 Takumar lenses on K-5. What do you get with your combination under Tungsten light?

K-5 WB with Takumar 50mm/1.4

Just upgraded from a K-x and finding some discrepancy in WB results between my lenses. On the K-x, WB under tungsten light was reasonably similar between my DA 35mm macro and S-M-C Tak 50/1.4 (other than the very slight warmth as expected from the 40 year old, radioactive Tak). When I screw it onto the K-5, the Takumar is giving me a much greener hue, requiring a correction of M5. No big deal, I guess, but I don't understand why it should be thus?
