K-3 Persistently Dusty Focusing Screen

Before I knew better, I foolishly tried to clean the focusing screen with an alcohol wipe and totally destroyed the screen.
I then bought a replacement screen for my K5 which accumulated dust from somewhere.

What I found got a lot of dust off was low tack masking tape. Take a piece of tape. Make a loop. Then dab it onto the screen. Loose particles should stick to the tape. Repeat a few times with new tape and never dab too hard that you actually embed the dust into the grooves on the screen.

Isn't there a setting to correct for CA.
Would you have enabled that at some point on the K5 and forgotten to do it on the K3?

Personally I'm a little bit disappointed that the features of the new mid range camera KS-2 (articulated screen and nfc/wifi) haven't made it into the top of the range refresh. I'm sure Pentax didn't want to devote a whole lot of engineering time to the K3-II while working on the FF.
What we have here seems to be the body that Pentax has been using to prototype new features going into the FF. The pentaprism hump on this camera matches what we've seen on the FF mockup.
It seems like a lost opportunity but if you're a K5 owner, this is a nice jump. As a K3 owner, I'm not sure I'd notice a whole lot with the same 8.3 fps and super resolution only available for landscape/tripod work. I'm losing a flash that I rarely/never use for a GPS receiver that I'll probably never use either.

Once feature that no one ever mentions, but would be a bit of a game changer, would be to integrate a flash radio trigger in the body. Put in Pentax specific PTTL remote flash triggering via a built in radio and sell a hotshoe stand with a built in receiver for the existing flashes. Or maybe emulate/support the most popular transmitters like Pocketwizard, Cactus and Elinchrom inside the camera and offer a camera bundle with some matching receivers. The functionality in the body could be enabled by buying a code unique to your camera's serial no. and out of the box, you could trigger studio flashes. My Elinchrom studio lights have built in receivers and it's so handy. When you have to set up a white screen, lights, a tripod etc, every step that you eliminate makes the camera desirable for mobile photographers. The people who spend their days going out to schools taking group photos or baby shots for a living.

Third Party P-TTL flash for K-3

Perhaps someone here could confirm that what I'm seeing below with my K3/Metz 58 AF2 occurs with other flashes including those made by Pentax.

Turn on the flash in the hotshoe and go to a dark room. Try focusing through the viewfinder and see if that the focus assist lamp on the flash lights.
Then change the camera to Liveview and try focus. The on-camera green assist lamp comes on instead of the one on the flash.

This would seem to be a bug, but where do I report it.

Also like others ( The flash system options for the Pentax 645z Chris Giles Photography Blog ) I'd like the focus assist lamp to light much sooner.

The annual xmas tree photo conundrum

I'm trying to take a photo of our xmas tree, initially without any kids etc.. using my K3

The room has all lights except the xmas tree light turned off. There are about 400 incandescent "fairy" lights on the tree.

How do I take a photo of this, so that it looks like I see it with my own eyes i.e. a dimly light room with the glow of the lights much brighter than the tree.

The camera is set to weighted metering, but it still wants the room to look like it was photographed in daylight. Should I change the camera to spot metering and meter off of one of the lights?
It seems like no other mode except M and a tripod will let me get this shot?

Once I have this photo sorted I'd like to move on to photographing the kids in the foreground using a flash to light them. I have a Metz 58-AF2

Pentax Lovers In Ireland -- Some Good News!

I suppose Conns re-stocking Pentax is good news in some ways. I went in there before xmas to look at a K7 to see if it's worth upgrading from a K20D. And there was no Pentax stock at all. Not even P&S cams. The only thing they had was an old K100Ds at an outrageous price.
Conn's were previously the only Pentax pro stockist in Ireland, so options were limited.

The main problem with them is that they are just off one of the fanciest shopping streets in Dublin, no doubt paying very high rents. As a result, their prices are sometimes €200+ more then online prices.

If it wasn't for the high delivery charges of Warehouse Express, or the fact that SRS won't ship to Ireland, then Conns wouldn't get any business at all.

Pentax need to get their brand stocked by the likes of Harvey Norman or Power City. Since the likes of Dixons/Curry's et al won't stock them.

BTW - I bought a K100Ds from Argos on sale 2 yrs ago. they seem to have dropped the brand altogether now.
