Wow, came back to a lot of posts with some great answers and thoughts, and pics too!
Hopefully Ricoh has plans to replace both the 560mm (now removed from the lens roadmap) and update the 150-450!
Long live Pentax! Lol

For me it is about what kind of message they want to send to their customers. As a birder I would expect to see a super tele lens being released at the same time as the body. They would be selling me a more complete system. While the 150-450 is a great lens it is now a good few years old and the AF motors in the lens could do with some updating. Possibly also push the 450 to 500 or 600mm.
What is confusing is releasing this body then releasing the 16-50mm update. Great lens but not the kind of lens you would expect with this body?
Anyway, I do understand Ricoh is not giving them the resources they need so they probably have to prioritize. I would just have been nice to see a super tele zoom with PLM speed AF being released at the same time to make this more attractive.
I am sure for landscape photographers or astrophotographers this body makes little sense to them as they have no need for speed. Hope that makes sense?

Hi All,
It's been a long time since I posted anything on here but do come along and read the posts and look at all the amazing pictures every now and then.
The reason for the title of the post is that I just don't get the philosophy behind Pentax when they release a camera.
Just before the K1 was released I got info from the South African distributor that the 150-450mm was about to be launched and I thought at the time, fantastic, if they are creating that kind of lens along with the 70-200 it must mean that the K1 will be Pentax's answer to the various sports bodies that were out at the time. Then when they put the camera out, it turned out to be a strictly landscape type camera not suited to fast action.
Now fast forward to 2021 and they have just released the awesome K3iii which is undoubtedly meant to be a sports camera. This time, the lenses that are being released are anything but sports lenses!
This is why I just don't understand their intentions. Surely when you release a camera body and lenses you should release a system. I would have thought at the very least they would update the 150-450 or do a 200-600 sports lens?
Has anyone else felt this frustration with the Pentax eco-system?

Has anyone else noticed that card slot 1 on the K new is wider towards the top and narrows at the bottom?
Could this slot possibly accept two card types, SD and CFExpress type A slot?

Looking forward to the upcoming introduction to the new camera later today, I reckon it will have the following:
1. Hybrid viewfinder. (my logic, the eye sensor to switch the screen off plus the patent for the hybrid, not sure if it can be used as a full EVF but I reckon it will be able to overlay info on an optical image.)
2. The photos of the camera we have seen so far do not show the usual SD logo on the card slot and it looks to my eye as if there might be tape covering something? The end of the last interview video showed the one guy opening the card door slot. My theory is they are going to use a combo slot that can take both SD and CFExpress.
Just my two cents worth before tonight... lol

Any ideas what that would mean?
I can't think of other Pentax bodies with that lock symbol?
On the K1 it is for Live View, so maybe there is still some kind of EVF hiding in there?
Maybe that button is quick mirror lockup and switch to EVF?
There is always hope... lol

Changing direction I wonder if this new body will use the new Sony IMX671 AQR sensor?

Notice that the memory card door does not have any labels on it. As far as I’m aware all K dslrs have had a label?
Why not go really modern and have plug in SATA SSD drives of varying capacity?

It is obviously new tech related otherwise why hide it ?
Maybe it’s not a pop out screen but a dedicated button to switch from OVF to EVF really fast?
PS Pentax has prior experience with EVF if we look back to the XG-1

Considered K1 but decided the limits on FPS made it only barely better than my K10D for my purposes, fantastic camera but wasn’t right for me and my photography.

I always vowed I would not buy another camera until my K10D died, this morning put my battery in and the camera will not turn on!
Just in time for this new beast! (OK maybe a few months)
Now dreaming of a price point around US$1850.00

Here is my wish list for this camera:
1. Hybrid EVF / OVF where you can switch to EVF to get blackout free high FPS bursts with a huge buffer.
2. Dual UHS-II card slots with ability to write to both cards alternatively for each image in the sequence.
3. Fast buffer clearing with no slowdown in performance and no locking of functionality on camera.
4. Ability to remote control camera either with removable screen or app with remote image.(keep disturbing nesting birds to a minimum)
5. AF points that cover the frame, something like the a9/a9ii. I can do BIF with my old K10D just fine if the bird is a heron or Eagle but cannot easily track very small fast moving birds like swifts or swallows. Too few AF points make that really tough. Newer Pentax models are good but need a better spread and more points.
6. AF tracking with real time bird eye AF tracking would be awesome!
7. Make sure they maintain the Pentax weather sealing standards. This is one of the reasons why I’ve stuck with Pentax despite them not having kept up with AF etc.
8. This one is more about lenses to go with the body. Improved AF motors in the lenses to go with the AF in the new body. Would also love to see some new super telephoto zooms. A modern version of their FA* 250-600 would be amazing. Something similar to the Sony 200-600 or the Tamron /Sigma zooms.

What if the screen is detachable but they also release a hotshoe mount for it that can bend and swivel to any angle so low, high or blogging vlogging angles are all covered? Plus remote control.

Hopefully the price will reflect these specs. $1000 camera? To me it's a K3ii with a bigger FF sensor and a few incremental improvements, however it's also gone backwards from the K3ii in slower FPS and a buffer that is probably the same so ends up being less useable pics with larger sensor. kenspo has already commented on diss appointing AF plus USB2 not 3? For such a large sensor a fast USB is essential. BUT Let's see what the final spec sheet and price says before getting too excited....

A question... What is a pro?
Pro fashion photog, pro bird photog? I imagine different needs... I have doubts that a model plummets out the sky at 200 miles an hour after a pigeon?

I reckon this new FF body is going to have interchangeable view finders?
Maybe one will be optical and another EVF?
The changeable view finders were a special feature of the LX... Maybe they are hinting at this by talking about the LX?
Maybe they could have GPS in some and flash control in others and various combinations of options??
Maybe you get two or three viewfinders with the body?
Just a thought... :)) |
