2 Questions for Mac Users

Thanks again to everyone for your infomation and advice.

I just ordered a MacBook 2.2 GHz laptop which comes standard with 1 gb of memory and a 120 gb hardrive.

As per your advice, I will not spring for a hard drive upgrade, but will use an external drive I already own.

It seems 2 gbs of ram would be enough for most purposes, but I also ordered 4 gbs of Axiom memory for an upgrade. Have not heard of Axiom before, but it has the standard "lifetime" warranty, it appears compatible and it was available on the website where I purchased the Macbook.

Looking forward to seeing if the Mac is as good as people say.

Thanks guys!

I'll stick with the 120 hard drive which comes standard with the unit and use an external usb hard drive I already have (I assume the Mac will recognise it). I'll also take your advice and go with 4 gb of memory.

I'll be visiting the States in a few weeks at which time I'll pick it up and I just discovered the website I was going to purchase from is out of stock and can't guaranty they can ship in my time frame. so . . . any websites you can recommend? If not, I'll buy from Apple and get the ram somewhere else. I assume it not difficult to pop in the ram upgrade.

Thanks again.

I have decided to switch to Mac. I will be buying a MacBook 2.2 GHz laptop which comes with 1 gb of memory and a 120 gb hardrive. I use a K10d and shoot in both JPEG and RAW - my hobby, not my profession.

Questions:

First question: I have decided to upgrade the hard drive to 160, but how much memory? I have been told 2 gb is usually enough for most purposes, but how much is needed for post processing? I can get a good deal on 4 gb and the general rule is "more is better" when it comes to memory.

Related question: Any thoughts on good post processing software for Mac? Again, I am not a professional and cost is a consideration.

I have used both Windows and Linux over the years, but I am completely new to Mac, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using the DA Limited primes with the K10d body as opposed to the FA Limited primes?

Which lens for K10d

I want to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions.

I have just ordered the DA 70 Limited. I'll keep the zoom for now for the convenience and use the prime when image quality is paramount. Although the DA 70 is not the smallest pancake, I think I can add it to my travel bag and not notice it.

I am buying in Japan, but I have an address in the States. I will send in the rebate form, but I am not hopeful.

Thanks again,

Bob

Which lens for K10d

I bought my first digital camera (K10d) a few months ago and I like it. When I bought the body, I also purchased a Tamron 18-200 (either the 18-250 was not out yet or I just missed it). In my 30 years of using a film SLR I only used primes and thought I would like the convenience of a zoom. It is convenient, but the results are not as sharp as I would like and the 18-200 is perhaps a bit slow and longer than I really need.

I am now considering replacing the Tamron with a Sigma 17-70 as my only lens for now OR keeping the Tamron and adding a DA 40 Limited or a DA 70 Limited. When I used a Nikon F3, the Nikkor 105mm was on my camera 90% of the time.

I like to travel light and the convenience of a zoom is nice, but I think I was spoiled using primes all those years. Budget constraints do not permit me to buy 2 or 3 primes to replace the Tamron at this point in time.

I realize the choice is mine, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Photo Bag Help

Thank you both for your imput.

I decided I would like more room and have ordered the Domke F-803. I hope to keep it light and it looks like this bag expands if I want to load it up and stays "flat" if less equiptment is carried. I managed to find one in olive drab which looks more like something found in an army-navy store than a case containingg expensive equiptment, which is good.

Thanks again for you help,

Bob

Photo Bag Help

I need a walking around bag, primarily for a K10d with a Tamron 18-200 lens attached. Of course a bit more room for a flash or odds and ends is always appreciated, but I want to travel light.

After checking some forums and websites, I have narrowed my choices down to a Domke F-5XB and the Crumpler 4 Million Dollar House. Unfortunately I will be ordering in the next few days without the oportunity to see either bag and could use some advice from people who have used either or both bags.

My concern about the Domke is that it is "100% cotton canvas" and I don't know what the rain will do to it and the equiptment inside (I know the K10d is said to be sealed). The Cruptler has a "1000 denier, water-resistant nylon" exterior.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Linux, windows, lightzone, & dual boot.

I am new to digital photography, but have been using different flavors of linux for the past few years and have to plug my favorite - Linux Mint (modified Unbuntu).

I recently picked up a K10d after more than 35 years of film only, so I am now exploring software as well as the new camera .

I took an look at lightzone and it seems impressive, but my laptop is a bit underpowered for it- assuming you really need at least 1 GB of RAM. I expect I'll download CinePaintand check it out, but I would like know if anyone is using F-Spot for RAW processing and if so, any opinions?

Thanks,

RJL

General Purpose Lens for the K10d Body

I appreciate everyone's replies. I think Jonas B has an excellent point in that there is certainly a learning curve going to digital from film and going from prime lenses to zoom.

That said, I purchased the K10d the other day and was about to get the kit lens with it when I spoted the Tamron 18-200. I tried it on the K10d body and fell in love. I bought it and now I only hope I will learn how to use it in time to get some acceptable results when the leaves turn - a spectacular time here in Japan.

Thanks again.

General Purpose Lens for the K10d Body

I have been happily using a Nikon F3 with non zoom lenses for the past 30 years, but have finally decided to join the digital age. I am a not a novice to photography, but I have no experience with a digital SLR.

After some research, I have decided on the Pentax K10d body and I would like some advice on the lens to use with the K10d body. Initially I will only have a general purpose/“walking around lens”. I am not too concerned about extreme wide angle and I usually use a lens in the 35mm-105mm range with the Nikon. I do some hiking, so weight and durability are factors.

I have narrowed my choices to the following lenses:

Tamron AF18-200mm F3.5-6.3 XR DiII Macro
Tamron SP AF28-75mm F2.8 XR Di Macro
Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC Macro

Although all 3 lenses are affordable, I could get each of the 2 Tamrons for approximately the same cost while the Sigma would cost about $90- more. The Sigma is the second generation of the lens and seems to be an improvement over the earlier non macro version. Also, 2.8 is usually better than 3.5-6.3.

The 18-200 Tamron and the Sigma are designed for digital only while the 28-75mm Tamron can be used with a film camera also. I will not be using the lens I end up buying with a film camera, but I wonder if there is some advantage to using a lens designed exclusively for digital on a digital SLR.

I would appreciate any information or suggestions.

Thanks
