Focus calibration - who to believe?! (hex or focus screen)

For the Auto Focus fine adjustment you can choose between applying the adjustment value to all lenses (apply all) or just one (Apply one) and you can do up to 20 different lenses (page 126 of K5 manual). But the apply one option will one be display if the camera can identify the lens mounted on it. By that I assume it won't work for old lenses and I am not sure if will work for the K series.

18-250mm or 50-300mm?

I would recommend the 55-300 if reach is what you want, IQ is outstanding for such a long zoom and price range, I used to own the DA L version of it, I really miss it since I sold it in this forum, so I am thinking in getting the new HD version that also features WR. This lens paired with the 16-45 and a 50mm and you are good to go

Well, yesterday was the big day and just wanted to share some thoughts about my first experience as a "photographer". First: easier said than done. Even though I was volunteering as a photographer, I was feeling a bit anxious. Once I got to the venue I learnt I was going to be the main guy, that was after the other volunteer saw my gear (I know I have been collecting lots of stuff :D and the K5 with a grip and external flash looks impressive;) ). She thought I could do a better job doing the "portrait" like pics of each youth and then taking pics of the delivery of awards at the end of the evening. So I was "the" guy. Second: After looking at the pics once I was back home I felt I could've done a better job, I know I got a few good shots but I am certain I am better at taking pictures, maybe the choice of lens was not the best, I ended up using mainly the 16-45 because among the 2 zooms I have is the one I feel the more comfortable with. Tried to use the 18-135 but it did not work for me, it just I have not use it that much really. Never occurred to me that I could use the 50 or even the 70 for the close ups... oh well. Good learning experience. I still haven't seen the pictures in the computer but from what I saw in the lcd , I think most of the shot are a bit underexposed (even when using the sigma flash) and I actually I like that better than having the pics overexposed. I will be doing some pp in the next few days and I am sure I will get many good shots. I think I learnt quite a bit from this. I appreciate all the tips and advice you guys gave me. I am sure I will keep volunteering and learning more and I know experiences like this will just help me to become better at photography, Thanks

I really like that L bracket, not sure if I could get one in time for the event (next week). Also seems like bouncing the flash is out of the picture since the main event will be happening in a gymnasium with high ceilings. I got more info from the organizers and seem like they want me to focus more on taking pictures of people during the gathering rather than photographing the delivery of prizes. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me. I am very excited about next week and a bit anxious and why not. Thanks everyone

Thanks for all your advice, seems like the 16-45 will be my best friend, I do have a grip for my k5 that I got from docwrm, so I will be ok for batteries. I will follow the advice of playing with the flash, I have not used it that much as I prefer to shoot with whatever ambient light I have but in this case I will be sure to bring it along! and I will also bring the primes since the don't take that much space in my bag. I am thinking of the 50, 35 and 70. Any tips on K5 and sigma flash?

yeah, I guess I could use the 16-45, do you think I should use the flash at all? not sure of the lightning conditions, I am expecting low light and that's why I was thinking about my fast 50, the other thing is I am not sure how crowded this place will be.

I should also add that even though this event gives me reason (if I ever needed a reason) to buy a fast telezoom, I want to do with what I have! I have the power to stop my LBA :)

Hi all, i feel like I need some advice. My wife has asked me to volunteer as a photographer for an event at her job. The event will be indoors, evening hours and I will be working with another volunteer photographer. I will be taking pictures of people (casual shots during the event) and during the delivery of prizes when the company director will deliver prizes to youth. No previous experience with this kind of setting, as I only take pictures around the house (my kids, flowers, etc). My gear consist of K5, DA 35, DA 40, FA 50, DA 70, F28, DA 16-45 and DA 18-135. Also i have available an external sigma flash and I just ordered a diffuser for it. Well... My question is Which lens to bring to this gathering? What kind of set up you recomend? I want to do a really good job on this one, somehow I feel I have to justify my collection of lenses and all the other gear and this is my chance.

So far I am thinking of bringing my K5 with the FA 50 and the external flash with the diffuser on it. Also I am thinking of getting a cable to attach the flash to the camera so I can move the flash around?. Please feel free to give me some much needed advice.
Thanks, Mario

Here I will leave a link to my Flickr account, look at the pics and tell me what you think, please feel free to give me some constructive critic, ideas and tips. Thanks, by the way I just picked a Pentax F28 2.8 to add to my collection and honestly now I think I will intern myself in a clinic to fight my LBA (I will bring my K5 and all my lenses along with me... hidden somewhere of course :) and hopefully there is no computers there) Bye bye everyone.

Well... I guess somehow I needed a grip so I got a used one. I have been using my K5 with my tripod a lot and I prefer to mount it with the grip on it and that extra battery is always a plus. After buying a Pentax DA 70mm I have stopped looking for lenses. Weather is nicer now so I am outdoors more often with my K5, so not much time indoors browsing this forum (not as much that is), so far my favourite lens is the FA 50mm 1.4, oh man though, that little one loves flare. and the DA 70mm has not seen any action yet. Using the 18-135 too but not as often as the 16-45. I feel like I am lacking of longer fl zooms after selling my 55-300. Really missing that tele the other night when I went to take pictures of that full moon :). I think I will look for a long tele prime. and that will be the end of my LBA (well... after I get the DA 15 that is... and the DA* 50-135, it will be a very long while though (next black friday pentax deals... here I am waiting :))

I was shooting outdoors today with my 18-135 and one of my thoughts was "oh man... it would be nice to have that DA* 16-50 for weather sealing"... I JUST have to stay strong and keep all my money to buy a new oven since our old one broke a few days ago. At least that was my wife is trying to put in my head :) and funny enough... somebody is contacting me if I would be interested in his almost new FA 43 ltd. (Of course I would). I NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS FORUM

So I thought after buying the K-5 with the 18-135mm WR lens I was going to stop, STOP looking around for more photo stuff... Oh man I was ever wrong. Buying the K-5 made things worse. I thought I was going to sell the 18-135 to get some funds back (at least that was what I told my wife) but no... I kept it after seeing some pics taken with it. At least I managed to sell a few things here in the forum (Bye bye 16-45, 55-300 and Tak 55) but hello FA 50mm 1.4 and hello again 16-45 (I could not believe how much a missed the 16mm range and I bought one locally) and that's not the worse part. I still want to replace my DA 40mm with a FA 43mm.. I mean pretty much same FL but better quality. and still feel like I need a true portrait lens. Thinking the DA 70 will fit the bill (or even better the FA77)... and why not to replace my DA L 35mm with the DA 35 macro... I mean... somehow I need to spend my tax refund. You know what... Good thing I have my wife watching me closely... otherwise I would be in deep sh%$#. HOW TO STOP LBA?

I was born a little tiny "point and shoot" optio s50, back in 2005 I believe, then I grew up a bit into a *ist Dl then was when I realized that pentax was the colour of my skin, after that I traded myself up and converted into an upgraded Pentax K-x with some added family members along the way. then felt like I was getting old and went and upgraded myself again with the K5, I hope to stay this way for a long time, otherwise I will grow old (and poor too:D) Did I say I love this forum

I know seems like a shame, just feel like I can not keep spending more money in lenses, without getting some money back, I'd love to keep them all. Thanks for the suggestions on lenses. I am leaning towards the DA70, I already have another DA limited and I love the IQ, so Im expecting something similar from it. But ideally I'd love the 50-135. and the DA70 and the FA 77 and the FA 50 :p ok I better delete this website from my favourites :D

Actually, at the end I am selling the 18-135mm, and not because of my wife, I can not blame that one on her:D. She told me it was up to me to decide (maybe she was playing a trick on me:)) I am getting more into portraits and I think I can use the money in something more suitable for that, like a DA 70mm or a FA 50mm, any thoughts?

Actually the SD cards are coming out easier already, been taking lots of pics lately and trying to get the settings that work better for me. Finally decided to keep the 18-135mm lens, just waiting for the filters so I can start using it.
Not really worried about the noises that K5 makes on Liveview. I really like this camera, not much of post-processing needed in comparison to the Kx when working with the files in my computer. The best surprise is that the K5 works perfectly with a Sigma flash that I had for the Kx so no need to spend money on that. Great, maybe now I can spend that money in a 50mm 1.4:D (I hope my wife doesn't THIS post). Very pleased with it so far.

I think I will just get extra batteries, the K5 body just feels right, not sure now I will like the extra weight that the grip will add. Last night I was playing with the liveview and noticed strange noises coming from it. I guess I will not be using that too much. Also very annoying when I want to take the SD card out the camera, it does get stuck in some spot. I know is normal for something new to have a few glitches that will go away with time I hope. Last night I updated the firmware too, Although I don't think I will notice any difference since I just got the camera 2 days ago. Thanks to all for the responses. I really appreciate to have a forum like this one :)

Wow, I received my K5 one day earlier than expected. I was very excited... opened the box, pull the manual out, battery charger, etc, I waited long 5 hours for battery to charge (it seemed to take forever) and I started playing with my brand new K5... it's cool. I am coming from a Kx... big upgrade, it's cool how the lcd displays changes from landscape to vertical, nice, even my wife likes it. Still trying to talk her into letting me keep the 18-135mm lens:) Still don't know if I will keep the lens (haven't touch it yet to keep me away from evil thoughts:confused:) but I like how the K5 looks with the DA 40mm ltd, very compact. Now I am thinking in buying a grip for it. This seems like a camera I will keep for years to come. Anyway... still haven't upgrade the firmware. Any thoughts anybody?

I am afraid if I do that I will set myself for failure and just keep it in the camera for a few days, then I will just put it in my bag and forget all about selling it :). Believe me, I would love to keep it but I just need some cash in my banking account right now :(. Thanks for the suggestion though. Take care you all

Wow... after reading some of the last posts it is getting harder not to keep the 18-135mm lens. Come on guys, I am fighting hard against the temptation :). Anyway, I just called Henrys and my K5 is shipping today:rolleyes:
