Not a camera problem. Shoot in RAW and bracket your exposures all to the underexposure side. The white balance can be played with using your RAW files. But if the exposure is too much then you will not be able to recover the overexposed colors.

Yes, they have errors in their literature, but so did Kodak, even at their peak when they employed 1,000X the number of people that Ferrania does today.

Herbert Keppler was a legendary photo writer and the author of the Pentax way (first published in 1966). He was part of Modern and later Popular Photography Magazine. I remember an article he wrote about how good the Pentax *istD viewfinder was compared to other DSLR cameras of the time. It really was really better. Today I own and K-3iii and I am grateful that Pentax understands what matters in an SLR, The Viewfinder Image.

After all Pentax is the last maker of pro level DSLR cameras and it shows.

My *istD is still in working condition, but it now has a few hot pixels. Here is a shot I took with it about 17 years ago of my son. I have posted a screen shot to show that it is image 30 I took with this camera. If this was one of my film cameras it would have been on the first roll I took. My first film Pentax was an ME, my first DSLR was a DL. About a year later got an original D for its added features.

Pentax DA 35mm 2.4 vs FA 35mm 2

I also own the DA and FA 35mm lenses. I agree they both are great. The DA came as a free bonus with my K-3. At first, I thought I would just sell it but after using it I found it to be a great lens. I also tried it on my film cameras and it works fine there too. As long as you stop down to about f4.5 I don't think you could tell it was not a full frame lens when using it with a film camera.

As far as a hood goes I just use the one off of one of my Takumar lenses and all is well. I can even use my thin polarizer on the lens and screw the hood to the polarizer and then use the hood to turn the filter to the desired angle and still have no obvious darking of the corners. (but this is with the K-3). On a film camera the hood makes the corners dark.

Lens suggestion for youth wrestling?

My son just started wrestling last year but I find my 50-135 lens works best for me. I bought it used from ebay for under $400 and f2.8 is great to have as all the shots are indoors and often in a poorly lit gym.

Pentax KF, colossal failure, or viable upgrade?

Pentax like almost EVERYBODY in ANY business, camera or otherwise, does not make all of the parts that go into their final product. Even if they want to keep making the same item, they sometimes have to change it because they can't get the parts to make the original item. I suspect that is the case with the KF. Pentax could not make more of the K-70 cameras even if they wanted to. They had to do a minor redesign, with more expensive parts, and issue the KF as a replacement.

Is the Pentax 17-70mm F4 lens discontinued?

I started out with manual focus Pentax lenses. I developed a real love of the feel of a good manual focusing and zooming lens. I owned the 17-70mm and bought the 18-135mm but sold it as it never felt "good" to me. The zoom actions was too tight and the focus ring was terrible. I have kept my 17-70mm and purchased a used 50-135mm to go with it. The 50-135 is lens that feels great on my K-3.

Note the 17-70mm lens has a really loose focus ring but it is at the front of the lens, where I think it should be, and it usually does not need to be adjusted with my K-3 and the zoom feels really nice.

New Pentax product: PF-85EDA

I have a "Ricoh Mirror spotting Scope 500". It has an angled eyepiece that when removed can be replaced with a T-mount to Pentax K adapter. My Ricoh lens looks VERY much like your Pentax 300 right down to the serial numbers that are only visible when you remove the eyepiece. I would suspect that they were made in the same factory and were not really Pentax or Ricoh but rather a rebranded lens. Pentax after all had a lot of their lenses made by Tamron over the years. That is not a bad thing, it is just what happened..

Be careful doing this as many scopes have a T-Mount that looks like an M42 mount but is not and you could damage things if you try to connect a mis-matched set. T-Mount and M42 have the same diameter, but different thread pitch.

I have 2 of theses lenses and they both do not slide out unless you pull the hood out. It does not take a lot of force, but I have never had one just slide out while walking around.

Pentax 645 film advance noise.

I love my old film 645 but hate how loud it is when the film advances to the next frame. It makes the camera unusable to me in locations where I have to be quiet. I was thinking I might upgrade to a 645N or 645Nii if they were quieter. If there someone out there that has both the older 645 and newer 645N that can tell me if the 645N makes less noising when advancing the film please let me know.

I agree with that a lot. Mine is so stiff that I don't like to use the lens. I'm spoiled by the silky-smooth turn of my Takumar thru A series lenses.

The HD Pentax DFA 21mm f/4 ED Limited DC WR
I already own all of the others on the list. But most of mine are the SMC rather than the HD version.
I stocked up when older SMC versions got cheaper after the HD versions came out.

Also most of them were "used" but looked to me to be in mint condition when I bought them. I guess the people that buy the limited lenses take care of them, I know I do.

Ultra-Achromatic-Takumar 300mm F5.6

The one currently on ebay is listed as "NEAR MINT" and the photos of it show a lens in perfect condition. It is also listed for about $3.000. People that buy this lens are collectors and thus the lens price is driven by collectors. There is no logic in what a collector will pay. That is why a painting can sell for millions of dollars even though it is really worth nothing. A painting does nothing, you use it for nothing, and most of the time it just hangs on your wall and you will not even notice it is there. The reason to buy and own it is totally emotional and thus there is no fair market value.

For day to day use the current SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM would be better. BUT if you really need to photograph something under UV light the Ultra-Achromatic-Takuma would be the way to go.

This is a super rare item and as such is worth as much as they ask as they are the only sellers. I think you could not find even one other lens like this on on ebay for sale at any price..

Pentax DA 1.4x Teleconverter - a question
Posted By brianmquinn

I've owned a lot of teleconverters (and still do). I have stacked some of them with acceptable results. But it was hit and miss, stack converter A and converter B with lens L and the results were very poor but converter A and C with lens L were pretty good. That is why I still own about 10 teleconverters and I have notes on what ones work best with what lenses I have in my collection. I must say that the best combinations I have are ones that were made by the same company to be partnered / paired with a particular lens.

I have a 300mm f2.8 lens that is just about perfect with the Pentax Rear Converter-A 1.4-L. I also have a "generic" made in Hong Kong 2X screw mount converter that works perfect with my 200mm SMC Takumar. You just really have to try it out for yourself. And with modern electronic TC I don't know if the camera would even let you take a photo with them stacked.

---------- Post added 10-05-2023 at 04:57 PM ----------

Have you ever tried to photograph a solar eclipse before? If you look on the web you can see several photos that look really "perfect". They are rubbish compared to the real think. If this is your first real eclipse, I would suggest you NOT take time to try and photograph it. Take your time (the few minutes you have) to watch it. I have been taking photos for decades, but I have NEVER seen a photo of any eclipse that compared to seeing it in person. I would say an eclipse it the one thing I have found is impossible to take a good photo of. (Yes your photo may look good to someone who was not there but it in no way compares to what you actually saw).

I also prefer a zoom that is done manually, not a push-button version. Still, it does allow for one handed camera operation. Sometimes you might only have one hand free. I can think of lots of great shots I missed when I was rock climbing because I could not operate my camera. I wish I had this camera along on those climbs. I those days I usually had a Pentax ME or later a Super Program in my backpack.

One other thing to point out. This camera is an SLR, your viewfinder is thru the actual taking lens. This helps when framing and shooting objects that are close to the camera.

I also found this on the web.

Here is an action shot. The AF is not all that bad for such an old camera. I have the Version 3 of this camera. I got 75 shots on this roll of film.

I have one, there was more than one model made, including one for left handed users! It works well and takes great pictures. But it is an auto everything camera. One great thing about it is the film goes from top to bottom vs side to side. This is perfect for half frame. If you get uncut slides the roll fits nicely in one of the old SCHOOL slide projectors. The ones for film strips.
