I'm pretty chuffed with my recent LBA purchase - I worried that I would have buyers regret! Took this shot at the Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire, UK on my K10d and Tamron 400mm F4.0 lens at f4 (wide open!). Pretty shocking amount of detail / clarity out of this bad boy for a 20 year old lens! Love the bokeh as well.

Picture was shot handheld at 1/90s, but in a crouched position and bracing on my leg. Also used SR to help out with shake.

Don't think it's much of a surprise that the Super tak has wiped the floor with the Mamiya in this test.

LR3b2 is unlike anything I've used before for RAW noise. I wonder how much better it'll get prior to release!

Considering that 10k yen is 100 USD, I would assume for a company the size of Hoya that it is 25000 million yen.

What an interesting lens. I didn't know such a thing even existed - this is FF right? Unfortunately I just bought the Siggy 18-50mm EX f2.8 macro so I'm not in the market, otherwise I would have been very interested. Best of luck on the sale mate!

Just got my Porst 55mm f1.2, this is without PP @ iso 400 / shutter of 1/125 taken at dusk. I'm pretty impressed, but it does have a bit of a washout effect when the bokeh is white in nature. I heard a lot about this lens being soft wide open, but this is more than acceptable for me. I think that a majority of complaints are that people just don't understand how to use MF, or focus trap - esp because these lenses offer a more affordable lens when compared to the 50mm f1.2 SMC-A. That could mean that less experienced photographers are willing to give 'er a shot and just don't try hard enough whereas when you plop 400GBP down for a SMC-A you damn well better give it more than a few minutes of play!

And 100% crop with no sharpening / noise reduction - not too bad if you ask me!

Can you grab the 45' split focus screen off of an old Pentax film camera and put it on a K10d?

Panasonic was a brand name prior to 2008, but is now a company name. In the same way that Saturn is a brand and GM is the company (I think Saturn was a start-up through GM rather than an acquisition).

Matsushita was the parent company and they have changed their company name.

EDIT: It would be the same if GM changed their name to Saturn. I find it odd that it's Panasonic now, as I used to be in the electronics industry and dealt with Matsushita regularly. Would be odd to buy semiconductors from 'Panasonic', but I guess that's what people are doing.

To those that bought the Pentax 1.7x AFA TC

Ah hah - so it only pulls back. That's what I was quite curious about - i.e. if you're trying to close focus, you have to make sure to focus behind the object.

As for lenses, I've got the DA* 50-135mm, and a few other fast primes. Was considering a 80-200mm Adaptall-2 f2.8 lens if I can get one on the cheap. If I stack that with the 1.4x adaptall TC I should have a smallish 190-476mm f6.7 zoom with possibly decent IQ. The only thing is the cost...

I suppose we only live once and we can't take anything with us.

Is it worth the cash (because it is a lot of cash for a 1.7x TC)? I'm really really considering getting one, but have huge buyers regret worry.

Also, does it focus both ways - i.e if you have focus locked at 70m, will it go +/- 30m in focus or just -60m - i.e. does it front focus and back focus.

Old Tokina 100-300mm F4 versus newer lenses

Hrm, well I've already got the DA* 50-135mm and was looking for a cheapish complementing lens. The 70-200 would overlap substantially. Out of curiosity, what was the lens selling for at KEH / what would be a good price?

The other option is to go for the tammy 300mm f2.8. Lot more cash, but probably more oomph as well.

Well just checked the newer version of the Tokina 100-300mm versus the Sigma on Photozone.de and, obviously, the Sigma smokes it. The big downside is the tons of CA. However, it does slaughter the 70-300mm . All those links were for the Canon platform because they don't have the Tokina on the Pentax in their reviews.

Hrm, It may be worth a try then. I just wonder if I'll be able to sell it for a reasonable amount when I upgrade.

There is a significant cost difference between the Sigma 100-300/4 and this though. I'd imagine the best price you could get on the Sigma would be 600ish GBP, while this could be had for less than 1/4 that price.

I do agree with you on the AF for the big zooms, which is why I was wondering about the newerish AF lenses. The lens reviews here on pentaxforums seem to say most of the variable aperture XXX-300mm zooms are pretty bad, which is why I had started looking elsewhere. As for my shooting, this lens would be for sport: rowing, football (EU version), and maybe a bit for use on wildlife.

Hiya guys,

I'm looking at sating this weeks LBA by getting a big zoom. At first, I wanted a 300mm f2.8, but now I'm starting to look at an old Tokina 100-300mm F4 SD manual focus lens. While I was about to pull the trigger, the thought hit me: is this lens any better than newer zooms? I mean you can get non F4 zooms in the 70-300 and 100-300mm with AF for less than 100GBP on the bay.

Would I notice much of an IQ difference using a very old MF lens and a newer 'crappy' AF lens?
