Well when photographing horses you have to be a good distance away because of their long faces. I typically shoot from at least 50+ feet away minimum when using the 70-300. I can stand/crouch down closer than that with dogs if they are still.

I will primarily be outside.

Is there that much of a difference between the DA 55-300 & the Tamron 70-300? I've experienced the purple fringing with the 70-300 at the high end of its range too.

Any faster lenses that are w/in my $ and need range?

I shoot with a K20D and I'm going to specialize in dog & horse portraits/action shots.

What would be the best all around or other lens(es) to use in your opinions? I want tack-sharp images obviously, as well as decent AF but I don't have a big bank account. Max would be around $1000, but I'd be more comfortable spending less (1/2 or 3/4 of that if possible).

I currently have:

Tamron: F/4-5.6 Di LD MACRO 70-300

Tamron: F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO18-200

Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL

As you can see I could really use a faster lens (and really want)!

Thanks in advance for your input.

CS5 not installing?

Hope someone can help me with this.

I tried to install CS5 last night (from new boxed disk of the software received directly from Adobe) and it did not install properly and/or completely. First I got a bunch of errors saying OS incompatibility or something to that affect, and then when I tried to install it again, it appeared to have done so but no files were ever extracted and no PS icons ever appeared on my desktop. I restarted the PC and then went searching for the software on the c: drive and finally found it under program files (x86). However, when I try to open it a bunch of sub folders appear and there is nothing to unzip, etc. I don't understand what happened.

The laptop I'm using is an HP G71-340US. Intel Core Duo 2 T660, MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, 2.2GHz, 4GB DDR2 AM, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, 320 GB Sata Hard Drive, Duel layer DVD +/- RW... Should be ample should it not?

I have Photoshop Elements 8 installed as that's what I've been using.

I don't understand why CS5 will not install and unzip. Can anyone help?
I have not contacted Adobe yet (I dread that) but will have to if I can't figure this out on my own.

P.S. I also see Photoshop CS5 in my "uninstall programs" list in the control panel, but it looks like it's not completely installed...said something like 12MB for size. *shrug* I'm lost. I thought this would be and ez pz installation. Wishful thinking I guess. lol

You guys n gals are not going to believe this but here goes:

I recently received an email from Adobe offering me CS5 at $299.99 for a short time, as a registered Elements 8 user. Well naturally this was quite appealing and I decided to go for it.

To make a long story short, Adobe bumbled and fumbled my order so badly that last night they called me three times in addition to emailing me and get this....they are going to SEND ME THE BOX OF CS5 SOFTWARE (full Windows verison, full licensing) FREE OF CHARGE for all the grief I've had to deal with!

Can you believe it?! I still can't. They assured me I'd have it in 3-5 business days and are going to email a tracking # to me.

Beforehand I was beside myself with frustration and aggravation and let them know in no uncertain terms that I was not a happy camper with Adobe. Moral of the story: The squeeky wheel really does get the grease!

Manfrotto Rebate - Anyone Else Have a Problem?

Got word from Manfrotto that my rebate was rejected, saying the purchase did not fall w/in promotion dates....WRONG! I kept copies of everything and will call them today to dispute.

Update: called this morning and they said I was given the wrong form to submit (?) so they would resubmit it with the right form and process it from there. I did not have to resubmit anything (yet). Was told to call back in a week to 10 days to check status. So be sure to call if you get a message saying your rebate was rejected. Could be that is not necessarily the case. $50 is $50 bucks after all.

I'm also awaiting a $100 rebate from Tamron. Hope that one goes smoothly (knock wood).

For anyone curious, only after contacting Adobe and telling them I was filing a dispute did someone spring into action and assure me my refund (now almost 30 days later) will be issued ASAP and that they aplogized profusely for an "error in routing" (seems to be the standard lip service excuse from what I've read elsewhere).

So again, if you order something from Adobe and change your mind (return), be aware that you will not see your refund back in your account for at least a month, if not longer if you don't hound them. :hmm:

Okay, nuff said.

I contacted my banking establishment and they said that the merchant has 30 days to refund the money. Thereafter if I still have not received it I can go in and fill out a dispute letter (where essentially my bank will give the money back to me and then get it from Adobe). So, I sent another message to Adobe telling them that if I did not receive my refund w/in x # of days, that I will be filing a dispute claim, etc.

This is just so ridiculous. I flat out will not wait 2 or 3 or 6 months for them to refund my money. Outrageous. Really Adobe? That's your interpretation of good customer service?

Update...it's now 12/30/10 and still no refund response from Adobe. Had to get on line and chat w/them again...and tell them everything again...and hear the same response..."will escalate to next level". Really??:lol: It's laughable. This has got to be the slowest refund processing I've ever encountered.

Okay, done b*tching. Just thought I'd share this w/folks in case you ever decide to cancel/return an item to Adobe...expect a healthy wait to get your $ back.

Well here's another rant about Adobe....

Stupid me decided I would upgrade to Elements 9 and purchased it on line on the 10th directly from Adobe. Then I decided that I didn't want it afterall. So I called to cancel the order w/in 24 hours (10 to be exact). Incidently, I selected for them to mail me the software, not for me to download it on line...they got that wrong and did it as a download purchase. Lovely. They then told me they could not cancel the order and that I would have to fill out an LOD (letter of destruction), send it back to them and then wait 7-10 days for them to process my case. Anyway, it is now the 22nd and I still have received no word on the status (as promised) as to when I will receive my refund. No email as promised, nada. All I keep seeing is the same message in my account..."Adobe response pending". Been on the phone with them (very difficult to understand the discussion due to apparent customer service being from a non-English speaking location) and while in two on line chats w/customer service, continued to get the same generic responses.

Honestly, I'm really not a high maintenance person so when I complain about customer service, it must be bad! lol

I've been reading some stuff on line about Adobe's track record...some people have been waiting up to 6 months for their refund, with the average being around 2 months.

Yeah, I'm done with Adobe. Overpriced and p*ss poor customer service...no thanks.

Hmmm...really? Since I have an older verson of Corel I could do the upgrade. $80 is a LOT more appealing/realistic [for me] than $600+! I wonder though, how much instruction/tutorial availability is there for Paintshop as opposed to Photoshop?

Geez, maybe I have 'drank the kool-aid' insofar as what software I 'must' have. Boy oh boy, now I'm really confused as to what I should do! lol

Ya know I actually have a version of paint shop (though I can't recall which one at the moment). Then I got my new laptop in January this year and it came bundled with PE8. I switched over to using the latter as opposed to the former. Maybe I should give Corel another look...

Ya know it's funny, I went to a pro photo site (elsewhere) and was reading various topics. I read time and time again that people who are aspiring to go 'pro' MUST have the full version of photoshop (this coming from respected, long-time professionals) and that anything less just will not do. In turn, on still other photo pro web sites, I read that there isn't much the full version of CS5 does that can't be done in Elements. Now, why do you suppose that is? I don't get it. Is it all just marketing to the masses re: the 'MUST' have mentality?

Warning: This is going to be a whiny rant/vent about the cost of photography related software.

I'm so frustrated with how much photography software costs! I'd like to get CS4 OR CS5...but who has an extra $600, not me.. I'd also like Lightroom...there's another two or three hundred to lay out. Oh sure, I'll take two please. Okay I'll go look on Ebay or elsewhere to see if I can find a bargain...hmmm...there's some out there but who can be sure that those 'discount' prices will guarantee a valid license number...scary/risky.

Good grief. Why does this stuff have to be so darn expensive? Looks like I'm going to have to make do with PSE8.

Okay, I'm done whining. Back to penny pinching to save up for what I want to buy.
Thanks for allowing me the platform to have my tantrum and thus get it out of my system. :o

Does anyone know where I can purchase an 'upgrade' to CS4 at a good (cheap) price? I don't have a lot of $ to spend so shelling out $600+ for CS5 is out of the question.
