K-S1 kit 18-55mm uses non-standard bayonet. Need help finding a lens hood.

Just checked my K-S1 with a similar white lens.
The ring at the front of the lens removes and I can replace it with an PH-RBA 52mm from an old 18-55.
It bayonets on and clicks into place just as you would expect.

Retiring (?) a DA* 16-50 with screw drive converted. Convince me to stick or twist?

I had the Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 for some time and was very happy with the results.
I only sold it because I was able to upgrade to a 8-16.
This was some time ago so the use was on older bodies K-01 and Kx so cannot comment on compatibility with later models.
At the price they seem to fetch now they are a bargain in my view.

Got an *istD to see how good pentax first digital camera was (also got an *ist to see how good the last film camera was)

Only two strikes against he *istD, tiny screen and CF cards otherwise very capable and at a bargain price as I recall.

Undervalued Pentax cameras

My vote is for the *ist. I got one for next to nothing because I was interested to try the final Pentax film camera and compare with *istD.
It works really well although it feels light and plasticky compared with my MX but definitely a lot of bang for your buck.
I have enjoyed using it more than the Me/MeSupers I used to have.

As an alternative suggestion I wonder if you should attend an event where there are many other people taking photographs,
maybe a parade,or an open air concert, where you would be one amonst many and hence less noticeable.

Sigma 10-20mm lens recognition problem on Pentax K-r.

I have also used this lens on several Pentax bodies with no problems.
The symptoms you describe suggest a problem with the body not the lens itself.
Most common source of these problems is poor electrical contact and cleaning as suggested above is a necessary first step.
If that doesn't help then it may be that the sprung loaded contacts on the body aren't working correctly.
Cleaning will help this if the contacts are prevented from moving by dirt.
It could also be that there is a failure of the contact mechanism.
Finally, does the lens turn fully when you mount it so that the locking mechanism clicks?
I have one lens which was tight and would not always click so there was no contact bewteen lens and body.

Your K3 iii did much better than my base model K3 at the same event but it did manage a couple of reasonable images.
The show was good but nowhere near as good as the last Flywheel in 2018.
I feel the draw of the K3 iii even more now as it seems to pair with the 55-300 so well.

I have no equipment advice but is it possible to go to a prior rehearsal in the same space?
You can try several different setups and understand the flow of the show to know when you need close ups of an individual and when the whole cast are on stage.

Far and away the K5iiS. My first venture up market from the consumer models and I loved it.
Replaced it with a K3 to get KAF4 support which is fine but somehow it doesn't fit me as well as the K5iiS.
Mind you I love the flippy screen on my KS-2 although the camera overall not so much

Hmmm, take card out of K3, insert in KF, use KF wifi connectivity ... no additional kit required, no more desk space, a transfer method which works already.

I don't use Lightroom so I may be missing something here but if I want to put pictures on my phone I plug in a USB cable to connect PC and Phone and use Windows copy function.
Just the opposite of grabbing phone pictures to save on my PC

What’s your go to body & lens for outdoor car show?

I only have APSC bodies and my lens of choice for many years was a Sigma 8-16.
I was usually trying to get a picture of the whole car without any people in the way and this ultra wide enabled me to do so.
More recently I have been using a Pentax 12-24 which is wide enough in most cases although it often requires patience to wait for a people free shot
but does have the advantage of being able to pick out details at the longer end.
To be fair I am usually attempting to record exhibitors at an event rather than trying for artistic merit.

Buying and processing film in the UK in 2023?

I must mention my local photo shop, Imagex, in Bicester who not only sell film but also process it.
Of course they are not immune to the industry wide shortages but they do keep reasonable stocks of what's available.

A new Pentax special edition. Or, what would make me buy a Pentax K3 mk.III today...

Sadly I agree with the view above that the changes necessary to make a version of the K3-3 which would appeal to me are so major that they would be a new model altogether.
In short I would like a proper flippy screen like K-S2 and better video, in exchange I would be happy to lose some functions such as pixel shift and custom image modes.
I see no likelihood of this as Pentax/Ricoh are going in a different direction altogether.
I presently have a K3 and a K-S2, I would love the form factor of the latter with the build quality of the former but until then I will keep the two.

K3: What Will I Be Losing?

Currently I have a K3 and K-S2. I like the K-S2 for the flippy screen which is helpful in some situations but I most often reach for the K3.
I use it for motorsports which is not quite as demanding as birds in flight but it has taken me a while to improve my technique to suit.
My guess is you will be very happy with the K3 in the first instance and then when you have exhausted the possibilities it offers the
will be a K3-4 on the market and K3-3's will be at a more acceptable price point ... that's my plan anyway!

A couple of quick comments, I have had good results using the Topaz Denoise AI and there is a 30 day free trial version.
And some of us dream about buying Pentax equipment in Japan. Pentax is a much bigger name there and certainly in Tokyo there
are many large stores selling new and used equipment so more choice and the opportunity to try before you buy.

Not quite what you're looking for but I made a display for my company's lobby with an ordinary TV which had a USB slot and could be programmed to show a slide show of images on a memory stick.
As I recall it was a 24 inch TV and had the advantage you could watch a program if you got bored with the pictures.

Interesting video. I wonder if he takes more than one camera to each session.
At one time I carried a Pentax for stills and a Sony for video - the user interfaces were so different it was difficult to switch back and forth as needs arose.

After a lifetime in IT I'm also keen to keep up to date but there's always a moment of uncertainty as you switch on with the menu button pressed.
I've just enjoyed it when upgrading a new-to-me K3 with a fully charged battery and reading the instructions twice as it's been a while.
Will this be the time the previously perfect battery fails? Did I use a Pentax battery or a copy? Will there be a card failure?
And then the moment of relief when COMPLETE appears.

I have a K-S2 and a K5iiS

I would replace the K-S2 with the K-70 as the current upgrade I could afford.
Tried a KP and didn't find it comfortable for me to handle.
K3iii is functionally good but lack of flippy screen means it wouldn't replace the K-S2
and it's too costly to replace the K5iiS

I have a KS-2 and a K5iiS which get used regularly. I mostly take pictures at motorsport events when have one with a long lens and one with a short lens enables me to switch quickly as I move from track side to pits and back. I have tried swapping lenses in the past and it's just a PITA. I also have a K-01 which I used to use as a travel camera although my wife's P'n'S is now so capable that those days are passing. Oh yes and an *istD which I got for next to nothing to see what Pentax's first digital was like.

I will try to get to the video in the next couple of days.
