All of the above is good advice but just to add some personal experience. I have been caught out a couple of times when walking out into sunlight from a building where I was taking pictures.
Suddenly there is a picture I want to take and no time to adjust the camera .. result an over exposed image. Of the course the same sort of thing happens going into a building.
With raw files there is quite a lot of latitude to recover a reasonable image because of the extra level of detail that is recorded.
It's allowed me to hide my lack of forethought quite well.

Got an *istD to see how good pentax first digital camera was (also got an *ist to see how good the last film camera was)
Only two strikes against he *istD, tiny screen and CF cards otherwise very capable and at a bargain price as I recall.

Given that this is a pretty old camera, has it ever produced good images for you?

My two cents, I've rarely struggled for reach when travelling except for predictable situations like wild life.
I have often struggled for width when I can't use foot zoom to step back to where I can include all I wish in the picture.
I have also found, on just about every trip, something happening which I did not know about in advance such as a wedding happening around the corner from my hotel.
This was a great experience as well as a great photo opportunity.
Don't create too tight a schedule in advance so you have some space for impromptu events.

Reading this post I realise that I have a Pentax cleaning kit on the shelf which I bought to use on my K100D but haven't touched for a while.
It looks as if the dust has been less and less of a problem as bodies and lenses have become more and more WR.
Maybe it should be DR as well as WR?

My vote is for the *ist. I got one for next to nothing because I was interested to try the final Pentax film camera and compare with *istD.
It works really well although it feels light and plasticky compared with my MX but definitely a lot of bang for your buck.
I have enjoyed using it more than the Me/MeSupers I used to have.

I have several generics which have so far given me few problems.
Having said that I will usually put a Pentax battery in the camera when I go out for a day's photography and take a generic or two to use if necessary.

Given that 4.7 and 5.8 aren't "normal" aperture readings is it just that the camera picks the nearest "normal" figure from a built in table

Another vote for the Zeiss wipes.
Most of my photography is at motor sportts events where the air is thick rubber dust and oil fumes ... not all a desirable coating.
I routinely have to wipe in a spiral from the centre of the front element, and occasionally use a second wipe on the camera body.
Also I never change lenses at the track but use two bodies, one with wide and one with long lenses.
As it says on the ticket 'Motor racing is dangerous' and it certainly can be for photographic equipment

From talking to a local dealer there seems to be a difference between legacy zooms and primes.
The mirrorless adapted folks seem to go more for primes, it seems that they prefer OEM fitting zooms
but value the quality they find in the primes.

Great videos which prove that Pentax cameras can do a good job.
After many years of shooting drag racing I would sound a slight word of caution, those clouds of unburnt fuel
have always seemed magically attracted to my cameras whenever I've shot jet cars. When added to the
rubber dust from burn outs of conventional cars it means I have to give the whole camera body and lenses a
good clean after every meeting.
I look forward to seeing more of this.

As an alternative suggestion I wonder if you should attend an event where there are many other people taking photographs,
maybe a parade,or an open air concert, where you would be one amonst many and hence less noticeable.

I have noticed since I've been following the forum comments such as "the Pentax K** is not as good as the Canikony &&&" in some respect
So then I go and look at the Canikony &&& and find it costs 2 or 3 times more than the Pentax and I think, well it should be better then.
That's not to say that I have been happy with Pentax AF capability but I have not been prepared to spend the money necessary to get what Canon or Sony offer.
I have yet to try a K3iii but from what I read it will solve this problem as soon as i have funds to buy one.

The first film camera I handled was a friends Pentax (SV ?) which was wonderful but way out of my league so I got a Werra 1.
East German made with a lens hood which reversed to fit over the lens. Solid, robust and gave good pictures.
Subsequently I went down the classic SP1000/K1000/ME Super route and more recently got the SV and MX I wish I'd bought before.

I have also used this lens on several Pentax bodies with no problems.
The symptoms you describe suggest a problem with the body not the lens itself.
Most common source of these problems is poor electrical contact and cleaning as suggested above is a necessary first step.
If that doesn't help then it may be that the sprung loaded contacts on the body aren't working correctly.
Cleaning will help this if the contacts are prevented from moving by dirt.
It could also be that there is a failure of the contact mechanism.
Finally, does the lens turn fully when you mount it so that the locking mechanism clicks?
I have one lens which was tight and would not always click so there was no contact bewteen lens and body.

I have no equipment advice but is it possible to go to a prior rehearsal in the same space?
You can try several different setups and understand the flow of the show to know when you need close ups of an individual and when the whole cast are on stage.

Far and away the K5iiS. My first venture up market from the consumer models and I loved it.
Replaced it with a K3 to get KAF4 support which is fine but somehow it doesn't fit me as well as the K5iiS.
Mind you I love the flippy screen on my KS-2 although the camera overall not so much

I wonder if at some time the focussing screen has been removed and replaced incorrectly.
Never worked on an ME Super so I don't know if that's possible but it might explain the symptoms seen.

I think it's worth considering a K5iiS, cheaper than a K3 but still completely avoiding the whole solenoid issue.
I had one until recently and loved it, good solid build quality and all the usual Pentax handleability.
With your lens collection KAF4 compatibility isn't an issue.

Hmmm, take card out of K3, insert in KF, use KF wifi connectivity ... no additional kit required, no more desk space, a transfer method which works already.

More pixels is not the only reason for going for a more modern camera, each new model has new or extended features compared with earlier
Some thing a simple as sensor shake to clear dust is worth having and for some of us a flippy screen is a distinct advantage.
And at some risk I might mention video.
Clearly the OP does not find these tthings appealing but they are enough for me to upgrade rather than rushing for pixels.

I don't use Lightroom so I may be missing something here but if I want to put pictures on my phone I plug in a USB cable to connect PC and Phone and use Windows copy function.
Just the opposite of grabbing phone pictures to save on my PC

I only have APSC bodies and my lens of choice for many years was a Sigma 8-16.
I was usually trying to get a picture of the whole car without any people in the way and this ultra wide enabled me to do so.
More recently I have been using a Pentax 12-24 which is wide enough in most cases although it often requires patience to wait for a people free shot
but does have the advantage of being able to pick out details at the longer end.
To be fair I am usually attempting to record exhibitors at an event rather than trying for artistic merit.

I must mention my local photo shop, Imagex, in Bicester who not only sell film but also process it.
Of course they are not immune to the industry wide shortages but they do keep reasonable stocks of what's available.
