I have all three lenses and would recommend the 15-30 for astrophotography. The 15 setting is really wide and great for Milky Way shots. The 21 works well too but is not nearly as wide. The versatility of the 15-30 is excellent.

Make sure you are not in Green mode where many options are disabled. I see you are in TAv mode which should allow AFc. There are some default settings in the user defined settings on the K-3iii which might over-ride the menu settings. What happens when you hold the AF settings button on the left side of the camera? You should be able to change there.

If you have a full frame camera the removable hood allows a nearly circular fisheye coverage. The older version (which I have and love) gives a vignetted circle which is not to everyone’s liking. On crop bodies they are nearly identical. The new coating might have advantages but not likely a deal breaker.

I shoot both. I usually reserve my film SLR for black and white (TriX) and digital for everything else.

Have you tried removing the battery for a few minutes to reset?

I have both cameras and you have good advice already. Be aware that the K-1ii in crop mode drops to 15 MP like your K-5 but has a high frame rate in that mode. I use my crop bodies K-3iii and K-3 as a travel kit with the 16-85 and 55-300 PLM. I use the K-1ii bodies with Prome lenses for more “serious” photography. Both are great tools. I have come to regard the crop bodies as ‘digital teleconverters’ for their extra reach. YMMV.

Thanks Kobie. Will give it a try also. Anxious to try the interval shooting with it also. I have been using a separate intervalometer.

Thanks for posting. Will have to give it a try with the K-3iii soon. I suppose the K-1ii astrotracer type 3 is not worth trying with image sync until they sort out the firmware bug.

Darn. My K-3 has been resurrected once from a whale watching where it was drenched. I rinsed with fresh water and after a week of drying without batteries it returned to life. The flash was not functional after that but all the rest works. Rainwater should be relatively benign as long as the camera was powered off afterwards. Worth a shot. Put it in a bag with gel desiccant (better to avoid rice if possible).

I have a drawer (no box) full of filters for my film cameras. Some are still used. Most of the color filters get used from time to time. I also use my Moose warm polarizer on color negative film where it is still useful. Other than circular polarizers I don’t use filters on digital.

Wow. Haven’t seen that one before. I normally upgrade immediately but held off on this update to see if the astrotracer issue was squared away. I use it with the GPS on the K-1ii but was anxious to try type 3. Type 3 works well on my K-3iii.

Beautiful images all. The color balance is perfect. I have been challenged photographing Egrets to get their color right SOOC. These all looked perfectly exposed with great contrast.

Neat observation. I must admit getting eye focus is tricky and this looks promising. I can never resist the temptation to fine tune focus manually with quick shift focus just to confirm proper eye focus. I haven’t found eye detection that reliable. Will have to give it another try now.

Does the shutter fire when set to 1/125th speed setting? That one is mechanical as I remember. The shutter jams on the ME super sometimes and you can thump the camera with your hand after removing the batteries. Worth a shot.

Very interesting read. My favorite quote “I prefer one A grade image over 10 B grade images. “ Well said.

Glad you got it resolved. I tried to reproduce the problem and could not. Probably just a Safari glitch.

The K-1 is really great to use on manual focus lenses. I had a KP but sold it when K-3iii arrived. I still prefer the K-1ii for its grip size than any of the crop bodies but I have large hands. I don’t think image quality differences will be noticeable in most cases.

I have had good luck with Pentax gear purchased in Japan. The language setting always has to be changed though to English.

Nice find. I still use my copy on the K-1ii quite a bit. Not found much need for filters on the lens since a polarizer creates weird stripes on the skies with that lens. It still gets quite a bit of use even though I prefer the close focusing on the 10-17 fisheye on APC.

Yes mine is still going strong along with a DS. They don’t go out quite as often as they once did however.
