Your travel setup

Add in a travel tripod, and it's the best travel kit there is. It works great in the mountains too. I use that lens combo with a K70, covers everything I need. It makes no sense to me to lug a bunch of equipment around when traveling unless the purpose of the travel is to get very specific, pre planned photographs that would require its use.

Can someone asnwer this question regarding dust on the sensor?

Why Sensor Dust is More Visible at Small Apertures
Do you wonder why sensor dust is not visible at very large apertures, but starts to show up at small apertures like f/8? Below you will find an excellent illustration that demonstrates how aperture size affects the shape and the size of dust particles.

Mirror Lens?

I agree in this case it fits the picture and I'm sure that the (at least) 500-hand-held-mm helped get this shot. Someone gifted me one a few years ago and I was fairly snobbish including it in my bag alongside legitimate lenses, until a took a few photos with it and was amazed. I got some great at bat photos from centerfield of some of my son's little league games last year. I took a few with it this year and got a very unsettling result.

I think it can be a good tool given the right subject and background.

thank you - it's been about two months since I had my DA 14 on my camera, which is a shame...

Pentax K10D

As others have pointed out, the K10D is well out of date in terms of resolution, ISO performance and speed of operation. It has developed a cult reputation because of its unique rendering style, particularly its colour rendering, that you can really only get from that 10MP CCD sensor. We've got quite a few members here on the forum who own much more recent cameras, including the K-1, but who still use the K10D when they want that indefinable CCD something.

My usual suggestion is to hang onto the K10D no matter which of the more recent cameras you decide to go for. You won't get much for your K10D if you sell it, and there will be days when you'll want to enjoy that unique rendering style again for old time's sake. :)

I understand those are Best Practices in the link above, but to me if I have to do all that there's really no benefit to having weather resistance. One of the reasons I went with Pentax is because of the WR. Technically Best Practice when raining would be to just stay indoors. ;-)

MX light leak

Just replace them all. If one goes bad the rest will follow sooner or later. A light seal kit will give you material for all the seals and the mirror bumper. Why only replace one seal then ruin a few rolls of film when the next one(s) starts leaking?

If you really need to know get a small keychain flashlight/torch that will fit in the film compartment, turn it on, close the camera and go into a dark room.

If you need watch time and camera time to be closely synchronized, take a picture of your watch when you start/end a relevant photo session. You can then find the difference between "real" time and camera time.

That, and the much larger depth of field. When you use only a telephoto lens, it's perfectly possible you completely miss a bird sitting two branches behind the one on which you're focussing, because it's all drowned out in creamy bokeh ;).

Sometimes you can spot something with the binoculars you can't even see with 300mm, but you can then take a photo and see it there. I saw this owlet through a spotting scope that a scope company had set up. I could not see it through the viewfinder, it is heavily cropped and not really good quality, but it really shows how the little owls are hidden.

Sometimes it is just obvious which aspect should be used (see below); sometimes we have to work at it (which I am either not good at, or too lazy).

Just for example, the first one is looking down the boardwalk/steps. The second one is the same boardwalk looking back.

What can I do with an AF-200FG

Hello ZoeB,
Even a small, non-tilt-head flash can be helpful when used properly. For example, in macro photography, often the top-mounted position works perfectly with no head adjustment, tilt or swivel.
It has two exposure (compensation) adjustments, -1/2 stop and - 1 stop, so, is useful as a 'fill' light for (say) an outdoor portrait shoot, to balance the one-directional existing light.
While it's only about twice as powerful as the in-camera flash, it has a big advantage; No drain on the camera battery. The pop-up flash gobbles power at an alarming rate and can easily reduce the shooting time.
With an inexpensive dedicated sync cord (5-pin Pentax, Vivitar-fc-pen, about $30 online) you will have all the tilt, pan, swivel and positioning options you need, especially with the addition of a helper or tripod. Same thing for wireless triggers, although the AF200 is pretty small for that duty.
So, for a handy, small, easy-to-use dedicated flash, it's great. You eventually will want the other features and more power, but for now, enjoy!
Good luck!
Ron

BTW it never hurts to ask if it can still be done under warranty. When it's a defect like this rather than wear-and-tear, sometimes they're willing to be nice :)

Lens for ME Super

I do like my M 50 2.0 and use it most of the time. I have an A 50 1.7 but it isn't much smaller. Maybe that's as good as it's going to get vs compromises of smaller lenses that use adapters/double adapters. I read through the reviews of the 40 pancake and it's the one real possibility. The other is a bigger jacket pocket...
