One of the best old portrait lenses IMHO is the m42 85mm 1.8. Optically the same as the K, can be had for <$200. Stellar lens even on full frame (if you go that way later).

The wirecutter offers recent reviews of binoculars and has some recommendations.
I bought some Pentax binoculars based on reviews and they are absolutely top notch. There are reviews of them online at binocular sites comparing them to binoculars costing thousands more (aka Swarovskis).
I would go for a higher magnification (10 or 12x) if doing it again - but I like using it for wildlife as in yellowstone/yosemite, etc.

It is difficult to get a unique shot at this spot - and yet you did. Striking image - congrats!

We were fortunate enough to get to San Ignacio Bay in 2016 and see some whales. Unforgettable experiences.
Not an easy place to get to but totally worth it.

First, apologies for "acing up" instead of acting up. That's what I get for posting from my cell phone.
After a few days letting it dry up it seems to work consistently now.
We went to see elephant seals at Anno Nuevo state park in CA. So the camera did go from a ~65F car to a ~50F and raining/misting area. It worked well for the first three hours, then started giving me fits. It would focus and take a picture but the shutter wouldn't actually fire. In live view mode it would only show me a black noisy screen.
Thanks for the suggestions -- I am going to check out winter photography to see what if anything I missed.

Please point me in a direction if this has been posted before.
This week after shooting outdoors in some mist with the k-1 and the DFA 28-105 WR I experienced something weird.
The camera gave me some very strange exposure settings and then when fired the images appear black. THten it worked again for a few frames. I thought t was all good and pulled it out again today And it is back to weird exposures and black images.
I put it on live view and all I see is noise - no image or anything.
Anyone experience something similar? Ideas?

Love the first shot.
The mx-5 will always be a Miata to me. I've had an NA, NB, and now a new-to-me NC (which outclasses the NB by a factor of 10 or so after driving it).
Can't wait to test an ND.

Agreed. And it's easy to slip the lens into manual if I recall correctly.
It sounds like it might not be fully engaged in AF. Did you try to put it into manual and then back to AF? What happened?

I had a Sigma 30 1.4 and sold it to get the 31mm a couple of years ago.
The Sigma 30 1.4 was a great lens -- I liked the center sharpness and the speed.
The 31mm is worthy of all the praise it gets. It's expensive no doubt. I've been very impressed with it and can't wait to try it on the K-1. I think you can search for images shot on the K-1 and with the 31mm on here from a link on the home page.

I had a chance to work with a famous b&w photographer last year and his greatest piece of advice to me was...
SLOW DOWN!
In this digital world we can snap so many things so fast. His advice was to try something, take a few shots and really look at them. What works? What almost works but has a defect -- a stray hair, a reflection that's not quite right. Shoot the same thing until you're happy with it if the idea/concept is working. Take your time. At the end of the day you are responsible for the shots and the look and the feel of the photos. And it's ok to start with copying someone's great idea and trying to re-create it. That's when you discover how hard it is and learn so much as well.
I'm no pro - I'm an amateur. But the shoots I went to after that I've followed his advice and my photos are getting better.

Love the image. Great job on the lighting. The shoes look juxtaposed in terms of style against the robe. Overall a nice image and one I'd be happy with if it were my own.

I have both, but just recently acquired the 31mm. Love it. Simply amazing and so so sharp.
For my second prime lens, I had lucked into an SMC Tak 85mm 1.8. Except for autofocus that lens gives the 77mm a heck of a run for the money. I like the 77mm a lot; but that 85mm is pretty special in my book too.
Right now, I prefer the 31mm. But I love both.

It is difficult to get an original image in Yosemite.
I like this shot because of the low cloud cover and the contrast with the sun shining off the granite near Yosemite falls. I got lucky to see the whole falls through a break in the clouds. Shot in 2011 on a trip with friends to Yosemite.
Cheers, and good luck to all who entered.

Got mine today and I was very pleased. Like another poster - a little surprised there was not more protecting the lenses. But hey, for the price I paid I am quite happy :D
