GRIII with flash

Here's my stealthy little setup for all those candid shots on crowded streets.

All kidding aside, dug this out from leftovers of when I sold off my K7 hoping to pick up another SLR before swearing them off altogether (still getting the itch for the K1 though...).
Really glad this is one of the supported flashes. Can't wait to actually shoot with this combo though, even if it is the antithesis of the GR ethos. Batteries charging as I type.

Camera Service in Japan?

I'll be visiting Japan next month, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and wonder if anyone had experience or leads on getting cameras serviced there. What would the approximate cost and turnaround time be for those who know?

I'll be there 2 weeks and bringing my LX if I find a good source is found but may also look to pick up a MX or Olympus XA if possible.

I was only able to dig up this but it's pretty dated.

I've got this combo together and was about to send the cam off for CLA when I noticed the infinity doesn't work. Trying to focus on a tree in my backyard which is probably 150' away and its still split in the prism.

Is there a problem with my lens/camera or is this a known issue? Seems like its a mm too far away from the mirror.

Edit: Just tested and it seems the same with my A 50 1.4 and M 135 3.5. so its a problem with the camera. Anyone else have this problem? I'll mention it to the service guy and maybe he knows.

Can someone share their techniques on extracting DR, particularly the OP?

I was oven obsessing over this advantage on cameras but never thought how I would edit it.

I've got an image thats a bit dim that I think is a good candidate. Boosting the exposure in ACR makes a decent image but blows out the highlights. Did you just up the exposure and brightness and boosted the recovery?

Thank you both for the honest opinions. Its nice to hear how other people view the same photos and the differing reasons for liking them.

Perhaps my problem is needing to narrow my focus which I will do next time.

Anybody with an Olympus OM-D and a K-5?

Read or browse through the Steve Huff review of the OMD.

I think it's a lovely looking camera with some great qualities but I'm in the same boat deciding between the two and feel like they sort of step on each other's toes a bit. K5 will get better IQ ultimately but the OMD with a pancake lens is totally pocketable vs a K5. The colors on the ooc JPEGS from the OMD are gorgeous to my eyes. This shot of the golden really won me over.

The video even looks amazing with the IS. Hand helds look almost like they were shot on a dolly.

High ISO is pretty comparable, DR is close, both are WR. The only thing I don't have a good handle on is the ergonomics and accessibility of the OMD but I've yet to read anything negative in that regards. The K5/K7 ergonomics are superb though so its pretty hard to beat there.

Taking a step back to see the scope of Pentax's offerings really gives me a sense that they value photographic tools and the experience of photography from the Q to the 645D. I think that's a really unique position. Olympus' range doesn't span as wide so they seem to be taking a sharper focus on creating something that does a lot and does it well. They're really similar to me in that respects but I think if I were to wait for a FF or get the 645D, the OMD would be a better choice just because it'll be with me more often.

I'm a huge fan of the OMD but it doesn't really offer anything new, fresh or unique. Its just more compact.

Then again it will all depend on how you shoot and what your uses are.

No particular theme but just some shots that I stand out to me and would like a critique on.
I guess it goes from people to abstract. Exif should all be embedded.
Thanks for looking.

Shot on my TLR and scanned. A little OOF but I want to get more photos like this.

Pretty much OOC and the one shot that made me really appreciate the lens. WB is a bit off but I kinda like it? Too much?

Not much PP, the colors are from shooting thru the door in next img but I really like the tones. Perhaps a tighter crop?

Essentially facing where I was on previous shot. I kinda liked how they were framed in the reflection but I feel my execution is off here. It was cropped a bit.

This was kind of a random shot. The woman just happened to walk into focus of the reflection. I like how both women are kind of looking towards each other almost as if from a different dimension/time. Colors and brightness was pushed as much as I could since it was unfortunately not shot in RAW.

Pushed a bit too much but I like the colors and shapes.

I like this one but don't think I have a good justification for it or its missing narrative.

Is K30 "better" then the K5?

I honestly don't get the point of the K30 or where in the Pentax lineup its supposed to fit into. I get that Pentax is targeting the more consumer level with a rugged camera but put alongside all the prosumer dslrs like K7/K5 there doesn't seem to be much difference.

At most, its gussied up and toned down. If I didn't already own a Pentax though I could see myself wanting one but after a little research, the K5 still seems like a better choice.

I guess if anything its setting the entry benchmark for future DSLRS with it essentially being a low cost K5. So hopefully Pentax does some wow worthy stuff in the next year or so.

Or just do like I did and learn to meter with your eyes.

It cost me very little and is a decent workhorse with solid seals and non sticking mirror although the meter didn't work. I didn't care to see if it does and am using it to get my Sunny 16 rules down as well as learning to do more candid Street Photography like photos.

Works beautifully just like your camera looks.

Pentax vs others?

Those are all convincing arguments, a lot of points I let slip by.

I upgraded from a K20 to the K7 for the shutter and didn't find it to be that much quieter but I do really like the K7 for its handling/ergonomics and am very used to it. Even learning new things still. The K5 looks really good in that respect.
The in body IS is great and the poor AF isn't a huge deal for me yet as I rarely find a need. I'm still using manual focus lenses most of the time.

DXO says the dynamic range of the K7 is pretty poor, 10.7. When I was considering it, I thought I had read that the range was higher than average but the K5 looks that way and the low light would mean I can use it much more often.

I guess video isn't a real necessity but rather pointing out a detriment to the Pentax system that I previously felt was pretty unbeatable. The K30 doesn't have an external mic jack so that's a no go even if video is great.
The 60d isn't a camera to desire but just fills a niche quite well. Focus is quieter, it does the job well. Maybe I'm being hasty.

My plan will likely be a K5 when the new camera comes out and the price drops unless it boasts much better improvements.

Thanks for all the input.

Really? I was under the assumption that the K7 and K5 were pretty much identical aside from the sensor and some under the hood differences.

Well I know all this. The numbers on paper look good but what I'm getting from the K7 is different. Granted the 60d isn't great, the system seems better with more support. And although the 85mm EF isn't superb, it still looks pretty great. I haven't seen any direct comparisons but the 77 isn't like miles ahead though I still desire one. At least to my eyes (and wallet).

I guess what I'm asking is why is Pentax a better option other than some kind of strange brand loyalty. Is the dynamic range that much better? The quality of light it captures isn't highly superior. I mean if the K5 can render, what I refer to as the way light drapes, similar to FF or the 645D, then I'd have no problem coveting it but it doesn't really. I've handled both and prefer my K7 for ergonomics, but also notice some of the controls on the Canon also make sense. Ddifferent, not better.

Like I said, build quality is better on the K5/7, but I see both cameras as a step towards FF which is why I don't really want any DA lenses. I'm trying to find a reason for wanting Pentax that others don't offer and not just some pixel peeping numbers/ratings from a review site. I do like underdogs and don't want to be a Canikon guy but taking a step back, everything is just a set of tools and whichever can get the bast bang for the buck makes the most sense to own.

Also, the K5/7 isn't an Olympus that's actually waterproof, not just resistant.

I'm contemplating a switch from my K7 to either the K5 or maybe even jumping ship.
With just a few ok lenses, mix of A, FA, DA, no limiteds or DA*, I'm not too tied but have been eyeing the pretty limiteds.

My buddy's 60D seems so much better suited for video, full manual control while recording and comparable IQ with cheaper glass for on par performance. One example he cited was the 85mm EF where I'd have to get a limited at double the price for similar IQ.

The K5 is amazing for its high ISO performance which I would put to great use and its basically a K7 so the handling will be familiar but video is not much greater. I really dig DSLR video as they have this special quality to them that can't be achieved with something like a GoPro or the like but full manual control...
I just shot some video yesterday and several times got the temperature warning along with the random limited file sizes it lets you record.

My only concerns are FF from Pentax if I need it down the line and how practical this move is. The price for the 60d and K5 are about the same except I'd have to get new glass.

To put it bluntly. What is so great about Pentax over other manufacturers? IQ, handling, etc?
Don't get me wrong, I really love my K7 and my film cameras, especially the LX, but the DSLRs don't really exhibit that kind of charm or draw especially when other cameras come into the picture aside from the legacy lens compatibility.

Good to know those FlipBac grips work and blend well with the LX.

Just curious though, how can one tell which version they have and what are the differences? Mine is in the 56xxx... I read the later models had improved electronics, anything else?

Does the date/data back print in the image frame or in the spare space on the neg?

I've seen some cameras do this and have an unnecessary desire for it.

K7 Quick draw holsters + top LCD protector

I've had my K7 for a year+ now and I know its old news but I want to get a screen protector that includes the top LCD. The chrome of the ACMAXX is gaudy and disruptive so just wondering if there's another option. I suppose the top isn't 100% necessary though in which case I know which protector I want.

It also has a Lowepro strap with the fat buckles that are in swing length of the LCD
.

ALSO:

Are there any holsters or bags where I could swing off my back and just pull the camera out. I'm talking minimal time between carrying and ready to shoot. It's the main reason I don't carry my camera around as much as I should. Most of my commuting is by bicycle too so I'd need something secure. Currently I have a standard clumsy Lowepro shoulder bag that fits most my accessories. I've also got a few Pentax 35mms and a TLR so the ability to fit them would be great.

I was amazed at Lightroom the first time I used it and still am but right now I prefer Bridge and ACR just because I have yet to figure out how LR manages the files I import.

It seems to keep an extra copy somewhere on my HD and I can't really seem to delete pictures from my SD through it. Its probably user error but I stopped using it since it eats a ton of disk space from the imports it has to do to read files.

Otherwise its a beautiful program.

PC Sync flashes safe on DSLR?

Flash in question is a Promatic FA 1000 which I've used fine with my Spotmatic.

The only thread I found referencing this made an unsure assumption on whether the sync socket was protected on our DSLRs.

Decided to learn Sunny 16 and zone focusing and shooting from the hip on a dead meter Spotmatic using Superia 800.
It was really fun and now I want to try less forgiving film just to really hone this skill as it is very useful...and fun!

And I liked this mistake, underexposed but moody.

Which zoom to keep?
Posted By Asudef
Replies: 5
I just upgraded to the K-7 and it came with the compact WR 50-200 lens which I like since it's a Pentax and keeps with the WR on the body.

The problem is that I also have a Tamron 70-300 LD telemacro that's gotten good reviews on both the sharpness and IQ plus it's slightly longer and can "close focus" so I'm having a bit of a hard time debating between which one too keep since they're worth about the same on the used market.

Are the two lenses comparable in performance that would negate the size difference? WR isn't a huge deal but I do prefer it just for peace of mind though. The other factor is I haven't had a crying need for the long end but only because I haven't shot much with it. I know the answer is likely to just do that and decide but one of them needs to go and I've already listed the Tamron for sale so if I need to make a hasty decision I'd like that it be at least halfway informed.

I thought you couldn't roll back firmware or install any that isn't a later version of what's been already installed?

So it seems 1.03 is perfectly OK with no negative side effects?
