Thanks guys!
I had time to configure and play with the K-3 over the weekend, following your advices.
Everything is so much better than my K-x, except the weight lol.
There are some cons, for example the viewfinder focus points being pretty much useless (way off) and the Live View draining the battery pretty fast, but still minor compared to the pros.

Hello guys,
I love my newly acquired K-3 + 18-135 that replaced a K-x. The auto-focus efficiency, increased resolution, low noise and overall build quality are what motivated me to upgrade.
There are many new parameters compared to the K-x and I remember reading misc discussions about some default ones not being optimal. I shoot full manual 90% of the time, RAW, and am looking for the best possible picture quality. What should my settings look like: focus area, AE metering, AF mode, ISO auto settings, etc?
How can I make best use of my 50mm F1.4, often used at F1.4 or F1.8, especially with regards to focus? Should I use auto-focus, or manual focus and use built-in functions to validate the focus point?
Does EV compensation work well, or if I should leave it at zero and do all the work in Lightroom?
Any other useful tip?
Thanks

I need your help.
Here's a picture from my K-x with the original 18-55mm.
The dust or water is always the same size, always looks out of focus (never well defined), and doesn't seem present with my 55-300 or 50mm, but this could be caused by a different zoom / focus?
The picture is cropped 400% by the way.
Dust? Water? On the sensor? Inside the 18-55?
Thanks,
Yan

I finally found the cause of this weird reflection. By mistake, my K-x was set to JPEG at settings that caused over saturation and other undesirable effects.
I took some RAW shots of a very similar car under the exact same conditions with much better results. That's the kind of expectations that I was describing in my initial post.
I know the EXIF data is very different, but even trying at different settings the undesired effect was still present during shooting #1.

Here's a more extreme example:
I had to alter the washed out section in Photoshop because it was too awful. Too much sunlight?

Comparing with this shot, the colors are much more natural / less clipped or "as we actually see them".
Am I too picky?

Pic taken w/ K-x and 50mm FA 1.4.
EXIF data:
RAW
F/1.8
1/4000 sec
ISO 100
This occurred with many pictures during the same photoshoot:
The front fender color is way off. The sun was extremely strong, how could I avoid this? Underexpose and then correct in Lightroom?
Some will notice the aggressive settings (hard contrast, hard sharpness) but the front fender was as weird before the RAW manipulations.
Thanks!

Just got my K-x ~1 month ago, first DSLR ever. This is my first test w/ a 50mm PFA 1.4. Was taken at a family party, without any prep.

I didn't read all comparisons between the K20D and K-x, but find it quite funny when you compare pictures under very different conditions. Why not comparing apples w/ apples?
ISO 3200, NR OFF...

Newbie enjoying his K-x. :D
No tripod, ISO 5000, F/4.5, 1/5 sec, and the pic is still pretty sharp.:eek::eek: I can't believe it. |

Thanks for the feedback. Here are two examples taken w/ my S5 IS:
So the two main sports will be wakeboarding w/ friends and family, and car racing. I liked my Canon, but I want something a bit better in term of ISO performance and lenses potential. If you look closely at picture #1, there's noise even at ISO 200. That's pathetic.
If you tell me that I won't get any better pictures than these w/ the K-X, well I'll reconsider my purchase.

Hello!
I'm a future/new DSLR user, currently owning a Canon S5 IS. I'm ready to press "Place Order" on Amazon for the Pentax K-x with 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses at 643$.
Main reasons for replacing my S5 IS:
- very poor ISO performance
- average image quality
- not enough manual controls
What I want to keep from the S5 IS:
- good zoom
- decent for sports events
My questions:
1- Is the 55-300mm lense somewhat equivalent to the 12x zoom on my S5 IS?
2- How is the auto focus on the K-x and 55-300mm for, let's say, wakeboard or car racing pictures under day light? Will I be able to follow the subject and take decent pictures even after 2 or 3 beers?
3- Can I get any better bang for the buck at 643$? I don't think so.
Thank you.
