From what I know, you can't buy the DAL 55-300 new. It comes only in a kit. When I got mine, no one was selling it here on the forums, so I ended up finding it at Willoghby's open box on Amazon.

Hate to see you so disappointed with Pentax. Your posts and blog led me to buying the K-x (white), Sigma 17-70 and now the DA40/DA70 (used).
Good luck with getting everything fixed.

Argh! waiting for a used one to come up. DA or DA-L. Seems like everyone likes this lens and no one wants to let it go. I might have to bite the bullet and pony up for a new one at $350.
Congrats on the purchase!

I kick myself for not getting the kit with the 55-300. Get the kit. Although I do like the white, I'd rather a black one with the 55-300 kit.
I'm saving up for a 55-300 now. :(

I would recommend getting the 55-300 kit.
I went with a white k-x with the 18-55. I bought a Sigma 17-70 used and I'm somewhat satisfied with it, but I sure would like the reach of the 55-300. I'm looking for a used one now. Too bad I have to pay more now to get it. I should've just went with a black k-x with the 55-300 kit in the first place.
Anyway, if you get the k-x and want to sell the 55-300 right away, i'd be interested in taking it off your hands. It would net you a cheaper k-x.

I have the older nonOS Sigma 17-70 on my k-x.
I shot maybe 10-20 shots on the original 18-55kit before I ran into a used 17-70 on Craigslist. It is a nice lens, I got a lot of 'soft' shots before I learned how to shoot at F8 and center point focus (I'm a newb).
It is quite a bit heavier than the kit. Not sure, but when I zoom occasionally, it isn't very smooth, seems like gears are catching.
If focuses fast (now that i use center point focus). Overall, i'm very happy with the range/performance (i'm still learning).

Thanks Harold, I'll check it out tonight.
I switched to center focus only.
I did a very 'informal' test last night and used Av mode (with varying ISO ranges). I've found that the Sigma is sharper at smaller apetures. At 70mm f/4.5 I noticed the blur that I was getting with my previous captures, as I moved down towards f/8 then the photos looked much sharper (at the expense of shutter speed).
However, i was very happy with the ISO 6400 performance. here is a link to the album: Picasa Web Albums - Karl - temp_kx_prob
Excuse the 'creepy' doll, I did this test late last night and the kids were sleeping (and I probably couldn't keep them still enough for those shutter speeds anyway).
Next newbie question: If lenses need to be stopped down to get sharp results, why are they advertised at those apetures? If most or all of your photos will lack sharpness, why even advertise it? Is it 'just' acceptable?
thanks all for your help!

Thanks for the tips!
I'm still learning, coming off of my P&S (auto).
I've decided to choose the "center point" focus. So i guess at this point it doesn't matter if I choose 5 or 11 points?
I have the latest firmware, I'll be experimenting with "stopping down". However, it is hard to adjust so many settings while trying to 'catch' the kids in their moments.

I purchased mine two weeks ago at BandH for $470 (White with 18-55 kit).
I know prices have since went up. It was a great deal, and I was completely debating the black 55-300 2 lens kit from Amazon ($644), but decided to go cheaper, just in case I didn't like the whole DSLR 'thing'.

Thanks for the report.
I have the K-x with Sigma 17-70. I was looking for a very compact bag to put just the camera and a set of batteries or two.

Greetings,
Just bought my new K-x from BandH (White with 18-55 kit). Great deal at $470 (a week or two ago).
This is my first DSLR, but I've always had some kind of P&S for a while. The reason I bought the Pentax was that I've always wanted better photo quality, however, I didn't want to sacrifice portability. Well, so my solution was to keep my current P&S (Panasonic LX3) for walking around, and use the Pentax for home and special events. I have two young daughters and a third on the way. As a father, I am tasked with pack mule, jungle gym, kid carrier, and photographer. So at the moment, I can't carry a DSLR (with expensive lenses) around to all our activities.
Anyway, I hope I can get some good photos of the kids at home and as they grow up at special events with the Pentax. I don't see myself as 'needing' any further pro/semi-pro bodies or needing a more expensive brand of camera.
I've already picked up a used Sigma 17-70 for general purpose photos (thanks Hinman for your recommendation on your blog).
Thanks to all of you for convincing me to go with the K-x (so far, best bang for the buck)... I like the white color too! Hope to be an active participant here! |
