Sorry for reviving this old thread, but I couldn't find more recent ones.

some test shots i took with the CZ Planar T* 50/1.4. I can't really say whether this is the sharpest 50-ish 1.4 lens i've handled, but it was fun to play with.

Item for Sale
Pentax K 135mm 2.5

Asking Price
US $220 (net to me)

Item Location
Singapore (Singapore)

Item Description
Selling a K series 135mm f2.5, well known for its IQ - highly regarded and sought after.

Copy is like new with very little user marks, and glass is clean with no blemishes - have been kept in dry cab since it arrived. Its hard to find one in this condition nowadays. Pictures of the lens below - not very well taken due to the lighting, and doesn't really do justice to the condition of the lens. Still - better some pictures than none! Will try to put some more up when I have the time over the wknd if the lens is not gone by then.

Will also include a pristine, genuine B+W 58mm skylight filter on the lens for an additional US$25 - let me know if you're interested.

Pentax SMC A 50mm 1.4

Asking Price
US$160 (inclusive of worldwide shipping and 3% paypal fees)

Item Location
Singapore (Singapore)

Item Description
Have a A series 50mm 1.4 manual focus lens for sale - one of the many famous Pentax normal lenses well known for its IQ. The lens works perfectly, and I would classify it as "like new" except that I do not have the manual or packaging that it comes in. There is the usual very small amount of internal dust for lenses of its age, but there is no effect on IQ.

Some pictures of the item.

Comes with a Hoya 49mm skylight filter, front and rear caps.
Worldwide shipping fees included in the asking price.

Item for Sale
[Film SLR] Pentax ZX-L SOLD + FG Grip

Asking Price
US $10 (net to me)

Item Location
Singapore (Singapore)

Item Description
[Update] ZX-L is sold! FG Grip still available for US$10

Here's a ZX-L for sale - an intermediate to pro range camera with all the features of this class: DoF preview, multiple exposure, Tv max at 1/4000s, the whole range of camera modes (Av, Tv, M, preset modes, Automatic, etc), EV adjust, diopter, and has exposure memory (in case you need to swap out film cartridges while halfway through a roll) (!!)

Light user marks, perfect functionality - no issues with operation.

The best feature in my opinion is the KAF mount, which makes it compatible with all the older lenses (K, M, A, M42 converted) - it meters the exposure correctly with these lenses without you having to stop down (which is not available even on the higher range DSLRs). It is also forward compatible with all the newer lenses (FA, DA - with vignetting of course for those built for APS-C sensor size). It is one of the few Pentax SLRs (film or digital) that can lay claim to this level of functionality. You can read more about the camera from the forum's SLR review section. (Pentax MZ-6/MZ-L/ZX-L - Autofocus Film SLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications)

Also bundled together is a FG Grip (which fits on all MZ / ZX series film SLRs, except the MZ-S). I'd also throw in the ZX-L manual, a vintage Asahi Pentax camera pouch, and the camera strap (National Geographic).

As i was typing this I actually asked myself again why I was selling this given its features. I just acquired an MX, and already have an MZ-3, so this one is the spare one that I should let go in case I need the space for another camera body (say, maybe the K-5IIs).

Shipping cost will be the actual price - for places in Asia it may be cheaper than US$20, and I'd re-quote you the price. For places like US/Europe/Australia it will cost more thatn US$20, but I'd top up the rest. Time taken for shipping should be about 2 weeks, from previous experience.

Lastly, I will be away from 23 Sep to 28 Sep, so apologies if I'm slow in replying to PMs during that period.

[Film SLR] Pentax MZ-3 for parts or repair

Asking Price

Item Description
Dear all

Have here a damaged MZ-3 camera which I would like to see get a new lease of life. I've had the camera since 2008 and it has given me a lot of great shots - ergonomics are great, no complaints at all abt the metering, best of all it has the full KAF mount that meters for older manual lens (M series and earlier) as well as adapted lenses, without having to press that green button (or whichever button that is on pentax DSLRs nowdays).

I woke up one morning to find that the mirror was stuck upwards as if in a permanent mirror lock up position (see pictures), and nothing i could do would remedy it. Everything else (shutter, etc) worked fine though I can't test it with the mirror being the way it is. I brought it to a reputable local repair shop who said that repairing this camera would cost S$220 since he had to procure the parts, but advised me against it - according to him he has seen the problem very frequently in the MZ/ZX line and it was a design flaw. The repair he can do would probably last abt 5 years or so, but the problem would most likely recur.

To cut a long story short, I got another MZ-3 online which works fine, but am now also thinking hard abt getting an older mechanical camera (K2, MX), the likes of which are well known for their durability and mechanical excellence. Before that happens this camera has to go.

So here's the deal - I'm hoping that repair costs for this camera would be lower elsewhere in the world, so just let me know if you want it and I'd send it to you. All you have to do is pay shipping, which from experience would be about just over US$30. PM me and I'd let you know the exact cost, and then you can decide if that makes sense for you.

The camera has been kept in a dry cabinet, well taken care of, and definitely not scruffy at all. Two things to note:
(i) the focusing screen is a split screen one, which I installed from an MZ-M separately; and
(ii) there will be no body cap for the camera as i put it on the replacement MZ-3 i got.

I'd put up the pictures of the camera in the next post.

I like the shot of the bokeh highlights circling around the globe - alludes to the earth in amidst (a few very bright) stars.

I'm still trying to understand this lens, don't think I've figured out its characteristics yet to use it well. Here's one of my recent shots from the lens though.

This would be like the photozone rating system, which is pretty useful  (which I look at before I give in to LBA and buy a lens)(actually, its more like photozone feeds my LBA)

Think it would help if folks post sample pictures in their review of the lens. I've always found that useful and always try to do so when I put in the occasional review. Pictures bring out what the lens is capable of, what its best at doing, and let the viewers judge for themselves.

A picture is worth a thousand words, after all. :)

Does Anyone Here Forgo Digital Lenses On DSLR?

I stand corrected  Frankly, I am on MF most of the time and i wouldn't really know the difference in my MF focusing error rate for MF and that of the lens' AF. The only condition where I really miss AF is in low light conditions with a wide angle lens (e.g. shooting a night market with a 20mm lens, handheld, with the aperture maximised to make full use of available light - which results in narrower DOF) - can't focus well in those conditions.

But this thread's not really a AF vs. MF debate - I would say that its more of the joy of using old MF lenses, which i have long found a great joy that you can't get from modern lenses. There's just something abt using an MF lens with a buttery smooth focusing ring, watching the image sharpen in the viewfinder, and clicking one the focus is nailed. Pure joy. That's one thing I often find neglected - when ppl praise lenses they usually talk abt the IQ, but the ergonomics of the lens is very impt to me for getting great shots. Other than the ease of use, in a way I guess it adds to the 'wow factor' of the lens - when you feel good abt it, you take better pictures!

Lensbaby or Tilt-shift adapter

A tilt shift adaptor is for perspective correction, most commonly for taking architectural shots so that your verticals remain parallel and not converge towards the top of the frame.

A lensbaby is something else altogether- you can tilt the lens, but its purpose is not for perspective correction - more like artistic rendering and effect. You should be able to find much more info through wiki or googling.

FA31Ltd: soft wide-open or pixel peeping ?

When I got the FA 31 I also had the same concerns. I think the main issue is the dazzling reputation of this lens - people have very very high expectations of it, i.e. pictures taken wide open to be bitingly sharp while the background to be creamily OOF-ed. I have other fast lenses (i.e. below f2) and seldom find them to be bitingly sharp wide open. That only comes at abt f2.8 and above.

With reference to your shots above, the lighting was quite harsh, and the subject was white in colour - there's a lot of light bouncing about. The resulting effect when you take the shot wide open is that the image would look soft, due to a sort of 'halo' effect from the white colour of the subject reflecting the harsh sunlight. That's my experience with these shots.

However, there will be some occasions where you can use the FA 31 wide open to great effect - usually in low / muted lighting conditions:

Does Anyone Here Forgo Digital Lenses On DSLR?

I don't use strictly old manual lenses, but all my lenses are full frame - so that i can use them on my film SLR as well (and in case Pentax gets around to a full frame DSLR - and no, let's not start another FF DSLR debate here, that's not my intention).

I share Ira's preference though - only 4 of my 13 lenses are AF, the rest are MF - I like the fun of focusing manually, even though it may mean more NG shots. Still the fun is in the taking as much as it is in the results. In fact, MF on DSLRs is probably less risky than on film, since you can preview right away and shoot another if your focusing is off (doesn't work on events/sports though, but hey, you might be better off on a C***n if you shoot those exclusively).

This would be likely comparing apples with oranges, since the two serve very different functions. You need to ask yourself what you want either item for.
