Problem with External Flash

Mike , that basically is a cop out .

I'm the same as you : I started with Metz circa 1970 when I got a Mecablitz 500 as a package deal with a Rolleiflex T .

A few years later ( 1976 ) I bought a new Pentax KM , and continued to use said Mecablitz with it - manual cameras ; manual flash .

A bit later , I had worked my way up the Pentax range : KM , KX , ME , ME Super , MX (x2) , LX (x2) .... by that time dedicated flash , with TTL and OTF metering was a thing , and I had two Metz 45-CT5 units with the dedicated SCA units for Pentax - never failed .

I used my two LX cameras professionally for about 20 years , never seeing a need to upgrade ( short of moving to medium format , but there were Hasselblads at work so I never bothered ) .

Only when it came to 2004 and the *istD was introduced did I think of changing . I tried an *istD and liked it , but baulked at the cost ; out a year later I bought a used one for about half price . Later I got a second one , although I was also still shooting film with my LX's . I had never before been interested in automatic focus , because I had no problem focussing with my eyes , but once I had an AF capable body , I bought a few AF lenses . Then , having those lenses , I bought an AF film body - the MZ-S : it was a good successor to the LX , although not as flexible .

So , that was me until 2014 , and the Commonwealth Games here in Glasgow . I thought to update my cameras - I bought a new K-3 , and a new K-01 as a backup body , very pleased with both .

Even then , talk of a FF Pentax had been rife for many years and I had held off so long .

By now , my old Metz flashes , which had served me well for so many years , were outdated . While the *istD had supported standard TTL , and OTF metering , as had the LX and the MZ-S , the new cameras did not , so I was looking at P-TTL . ( I had already been using Nikon kit with their iTTL at work , but I am not a Nikon fan ) . I bought my first Metz 54 MZ-4 flash , with the SCA 3702 adaptor - this worked great on the K-3 but not on the K-01 .

I subsequently bought another 3 54 MZ-4 , four 45 CL-4 Digital , and one 70 MZ-5 guns , all of which worked fine with the k-3 , and the *istD cameras , but never the k-01 .

Later , I got a K-1 and the same was true .

Now , all of these flashes are the older SCA module type , and they work fine with my SLR and DSLR cameras , but not the K-01 .

I also have a set of four Cactus V6II transceivers , which I use for a 3 flash off-camera setup , again fine with K-1 and K-3 , but won't talk to the k-01 .

I also have seven 'dumb' Elinchrome flasheads , which I use with 'dumb' wireless triggers on the DSLRs ; TBH never tried them with the K-01 , which I only bought as a backup body , and mainly use at family/social outings where a DSLR would be overkill . BTW , the K-01 is a perfect partner with the DA Limiteds , of which I have all 5 , bought one at a time . I love that it uses the same lenses ( including all my cherished SMC-M lenses from my film days ) and the same batteries as my other cameras .

I did a search here to see if others had similar issues ; while many similar questions have been posed , there seems to be no definitive answer . I am only prompted to write here because today I just purchased a Metz 26 AF2 flash - this will be my first non SCA Metz flash ( but Pentax dedicated ) , so I will be curious to see how it turns out .

I would also be interested to hear the comments of others .

Regarding discussions on other forums , I have always tried to have a compact 'carry everywhere' camera . In the film days this was my Rollei 35S ( which I still have ) . After going digital , I tried and rejected numerous compact cameras , until I got a Canon G11 . I was unhappy with the image quality , so that was partly why I got the k-01 .

More recently , I was given a broken Canon G12 , which I managed to repair ; I will probably give it to my son , but I'm now thinking of buying a Pentax Q series camera to try it out ....

I wonder if the flash issues will apply to it too ?

Who said it did not succeed ?

I bought mine in 2014 and still use it regularly alongside my K-3 and K-1

It is the perfect addition to my system , using the same batteries and lenses as my other cameras .

To me , it is a resounding success .

I went full frame because I had waited years for it and already had all my FF lenses from the film era .

Not really : Pentax were famously the first to make 1 million , 2 million , 5 million , even 10 million SLRs .

So it is quite quantifiable that Pentax 'popularised' the SLR , especially since , during the 60s they outsold Canon and Nikon put together .

Need a recommendation for a rolling camera bag

You can't beat Pelican cases for robustness and protection of your kit ; plus they're sturdy enough to stand on if you need a bit of extra height on occasion . They do rolling versions .

Otherwise , any of the reputable makes of camera bags have rolling versions ; although I don't have any rolling ones , I have two Lowepro Photo Trekkers , one for still kit and one for video , plus a smaller backpack I decant what I am actually going to use if going far from the car .

Not all soft bags are waterproof though .

With so many great offerings from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc., why do you choose Pentax?

As mentioned elsewhere , I was influenced by an older member of my camera club , back in the early 70's , who had an ESii and lots of other Pentax kit .

When I started working in 1975 , I looked at numerous cameras : there were Zenits and Praktikas ; I wanted something better . I liked Pentax which seemed compact , well built and good value for money ; I also looked at Canon and Nikon , but couldn't see why they were so much more expensive as they didn't seem to offer anything more ; it was a toss up between the KM and the KX , in the end I decided the KM would take equally good pictures , so that was what I bought .

Over the years I bought an ME , ME Super , KX , MX ( then another ) , LX ( then another ) and expanded my range of lenses , had a Rollei E36 flash , then a Metz 45 CT5 and a second one ( I had liked Metz after getting a Mecablitz 500 along with my used Rollei TLR ) , along with the SCA adaptors which allowed the OTF metering with the LX's , and only recently gave them away to a student after I got my 45 CL-4 Digitals .

Back when I started with Pentax , they actually were the market leader , outselling the competition put together . I think few people nowadays realise that was once the case ; that Pentax were THE top selling brand for a very long time .

---------- Post added 27-10-19 at 18:04 ----------

Even their first DSLR - the *istD , allowed fully manual operation with all the existing lenses , and moreover , it had the 'green button' mode which gave correct metering with the older lenses .

I still use my SMC-M lenses with my K-1 , K-3 and K-01 .

Joining the local camera club when still in high school in the 1970's .

---------- Post added 27-10-19 at 17:51 ----------

I was definitely influenced in choice of equipment , as well as learning a lot , from a few of the older members in my camera club ; one member , whose work I admired , used Rollei TLR's and that led to me getting a very very used Rolleiflex T ; one of the other members had a Pentax ESII , which at the time seemed space age , and that led to me buying my KM when I got my first job in 1975 .

I've managed with three computers over the last 20 years : after a few years of using Amigas for adding titles to videos , I got my first Mac - an AGP graphics PowerMac G4 , on Christmas Eve 1999 ( I was actually going to buy an iMac DV , but the customer in front of me bought the last one ) that computer did me well for a while ; about 5 years later , the Powermac G5's had been out for a while and I picked up a used DP 2.5GHz G5 for a good price , still have it , but back in 2014 , after I got the K-3 , and had moved onto HD video , I picked up a 2009 8core 2.8GHz MacPro , which I am using today . I've similarly been through a few laptops , from a G3 PowerBook Pismo , then a 17" Powerbook G4 1.7GHz , to a 2009 MacBookPro 17" machine .

The old machines have been handed down around the family and still going well . My current machines still do everything I need them to .

Computers can last a surprisingly long time if you buy well .

Back in the film days , I kept a Rollei 35S in the glove box of my car , along with a couple of rolls of film , just so there was always a camera on hand . It served a useful purpose , especially the one time a van driver ran into the back of my car and then tried to argue the toss .

My first toe in the water with digital was a cheap Vivitar branded point and shoot - I can't remember what happened , but I must have given it away . After some 30 or so years of shooting Pentax film cameras , latterly having two LX bodies and a good collection of SMC-M glass , I was more than interested when the *istD was announced , but initially put off by the £1300 price tag ; about a year later , I picked up a used one ( body only ) for around £500 and that was me started with DSLRs , initially just using it with my SMC-M glass , over the next couple of years I picked up a couple of AF lenses , but mainly used it with my existing collection .

That camera took very nice pictures , although I continued to shoot film alongside . My daughter turned 21 just about the time the K-10D came out and I bought her one for her birthday ; she still uses it today . I stuck with my *istD for almost 10 years , picking up a second one along the way , and only replaced it in 2014 with a K-3 and K-01 , bought at the same time when an unexpected tax rebate came through ...

I kept one *istD and one LX body in my Photo Trekker back pack ( not something I'd want to trek far with ) , then found myself shooting less and less film , eventually selling off all of my film bodies except for my well worn LX ( sold the 'good' one ) and my very first SLR , my KM from circa 1975 .

Since getting my K-1 in January of last year , I gave one *istD to my daughter , and the other one to my 11 year old son ( he had a little Canon p&s ) ; while Gillian is quite into photography ( I had given her one of my MX bodies and a few lenses when she was just into her teens ) and uses both the K-10D and the *istD regularly still , and always shows me her latest shots when I visit ; Harris , being a young boy , and a different generation , seems to use his iPhone more than anything else , always sharing pictures with his pals - who's to say there's anything wrong .

Just out of curiosity , I picked up that *istD back in the summer , with its 18-55mm kit lens , and was pleasantly surprised at just how good the pictures are , taken under favourable conditions , although really I'd only need to look back through my hard drives to see some of the shots I took with it before , and the fact that I was content to keep using it for nearly a decade before changing it . Part of that , though , was the constant rumour that digital FF was just around the corner , and I always held off for it , until the advent of the K-3 was such an advance that I couldn't ignore it any longer .

If I'm honest , my current collection of cameras is more than 'good enough' , although I hanker to pick up the 3 FA Limiteds , just as I bought all five DA Limited primes when I was shooting the K-3 and K-01 . I always thought that one of the hallmarks of Pentax , besides excellent image quality , was the build quality and compactness , compared to other brands , and that rather than joining in the race for fastest ( and bulkiest ) lenses in the bag , they'd do well to keep to the philosophy of the Limited lenses , and bring out more FA Limiteds , expanding the focal lengths both up and down the way , with maybe 20mm , 24mm , 135mm and 200mm Limiteds in compact packages with the same all metal construction - I'm sure they'd sell .

I know there are more modern and faster lenses out there , but for what I do these days , I don't really need any more .

Oh , and coming back on topic , my 'car kit ' is a little Canon Powershot G12 , which lives in my glovebox nowadays in place of the Rollei ; nowhere near as compact as the Rollei was , but it does the job . I do still have that Rollei somewhere too ...

The Ideal Pentax Mirrorless Camera

I bought my K-01 to complement my other Pentax DSLR and film SLR cameras ; it is part of my system , and I like it very much , still using it regularly 5 years on . It initially was my backup body to my K-3 , bought at the same time back in 2014 , but it fills a different role being a small and unobtrusive camera which I can use without attracting attention in some places where a DSLR would stand out .

I like that I can use any of my existing collection of lenses on it , that it uses the same battery as my K-1 and K-3 , that my flashes work on it .... and that it is a fabulous and compact package combined with my DA Limited lenses .

If Pentax were going to make another mirrorless , they could do worse than use the K-01 as a starting point , keep all the above good points ; add a FF sensor , add an articulating rear screen , add an optional EVF , and put front and rear control wheels , like on the DSLRs , so that I don't need to toggle one dial between different functions . If all that could be done without it being (much) bigger than the K-01 , they'd have a winner .

You can import your RAW files from your Photos library into LR CC Classic ( I only use Photos to import photos from my iPhone ) , and you can create a LR library on your external discs .

Having used LR since its original inception, I don’t use it for cataloguing , I already had my own system of structured folders , into which I directly import my RAW files from my memory cards ( I create a new folder for each job , within which there is a RAW folder , a JPEG folder ( to which I export my finished files ) , sometimes a reduced size JPEG folder and perhaps a selection folder ) . Having imported my RAW files to the folder on my external drive , I import them into LR ‘at their original location’ , then I process them as required , after which I export the full size JPEGS to the JPEG folder ; if I need to email them to a client then I can use the size reduction in the LR export menu ( eg reduce long edge to 800 pixels ) and export to the reduced JPEG folder ; having said that the Apple Mail application provides a quick means of reducing files to email as well . If I have shot hundreds of images on a job , I might pull out a small selection of best images , and save those into another folder ; or any number of sub folders , for example if covering an event I might create folders for each of the key people who took part . It is also easy , within LR , to add keywords into the metadata for all images , and then further keywords to selected images , which makes your database searchable ; although even without keywords the descriptive names of my folders , which include such things as name of the event , location and date , make it easy for me to find images .

Once the folder is finished , I copy it from my primary external drive , to my backup one , I also have a third drive which I keep at my mum’s house and every few weeks when I go to visit I copy my most recent files over to my G-Drive mini and take my MBP over to dump those files onto that drive , such that I have an off site backup in case of fire , burglary or any other disaster . I suppose I could buy cloud storage, but I’m still wary of that .

After a job is completed , and successfully exported to external folders , I delete them from LR , so I don’t keep a LRcat as such .

In years gone by , I used to do everything in PS , nowadays something like 90% of jobs are done in LR , since I try to get images as right as possible in camera ; only resorting to PS if I need to remove unwanted items from backgrounds , or to paste eyes from one image to another if someone has blinked in a group shot ( normally the more people in a group , the more shots I take , but it is surprising how often there is someone with eyes shut in one shot or another , or in the shot that , for some other reason , is the best of the bunch ) . For the most part , the tools in LR are enough , but I also like to keep my hand in with PS as it is all too easy to forget things if you don’t use it .

I have a stack of G-Technology drives - including a G-Speed es raid array as a scratch drive for video works in progress , several G-Raid drives , separately for photos and video archival , others for audio , and some G-Drive externals for documents , installers and other stuff .

All of these are FW800 drives , which daisy chain , and collected over a number of years I now have around 60 Tb of storage hanging off my MacPro , nothing other than the OS resides on the main drive in the machine , with a ‘time machine’ backup , and everything on my external drives can be accessed across my network by any machine in the house .

I also use the Adobe photographers package , which allows me to have it on my MacPro and MBP ; I also have an old PowerMac G5 with CS2 still installed , and an even older PowerBook G4 with CS , plus my son has his iMac and white MacBook with older versions which I bought in the past ; my partner just uses Photos on her MBP , since she just uses her iPhone for photography and that meets her needs .

For video I still use Final Cut Studio 3 , which is on my two main machines , and Final Cut Express HD on the G5 and G4 ; my 11 YO son uses iMovie .

You might want to consider the new APSC flagship camera , which is a prize in the December/January part of the centenary contest on this forum , so presumably it will be available around that time .

Otherwise , if high picture quality and FPS are important to you , also consider the K-3/K-3ii . No doubt , once the new model comes out there will either be discounts on unsold K-3ii cameras , or used ones being sold by people upgrading to the new model .

Canon and Nikon were for many years the ‘also rans’ : Pentax outsold all of them put together . If Pentax established a separate premium brand , standing apart from their ‘ value for money ‘ brand , they could charge Leica or Hasselblad prices without needing to sell in large numbers : customers would be paying for exclusivity.

Having grown up with Pentax , starting with my KM circa 1975 and working my way up the range to two LX cameras , which I used for over two decades before moving to digital circa 2005 with a used *istD , which I still have , I can see where the OP is coming from .

My 9 year old son started out with a V-Tech Kiddizoom camera ( a camera designed especially for children : one of the main features is that it has twin viewfinders which , being put to both eyes , encourages the camera to be held more or less level ) ; when he outgrew that , he got an inexpensive Canon compact camera , which he uses all the time , and is becoming quite adept with the ‘Photos’ application on the older iMac we passed on to him .

While I now shoot with a K-1 and K-3 , and sometimes my K-01 , I have kept my *ist D for my son and will give it to him on his 10th birthday .

I also have an older daughter , and started her off with one of my MX film cameras , which she used for a while , before buying her the then current model K-10D for her 21st birthday ( she still uses it ) and later giving her one of my two *istD bodies as a backup camera .

There have been rumours over the last few days of a K-1 Mk ii. There has been debate over the possible name for such a camera ; if indeed it is an update of the K-1 , then why not K-1 Super ?

It occurs to me that we are approaching the centenary of the founding of Asahi at the end of next year .

Just as the LX was named to commemorate the 60th anniversary when it came out , how fitting would it be for them to launch a class leading professional camera , above the K-1 , in November 2019 and call it the Pentax C ?

Then again they could resurrect the Asahi name and use it as an Uber brand , just as Mercedes did with Maybach , VW did with Audi or Toyota did with Lexus , and brand the new top camera as the Asahi C .

It could be a Japanese Super brand , built to compete head on with the likes of Leica or Hasselblad ; and what better name with 100 years of illustrious history behind it ?
