After much researching and reading I decided to test the DX-8R on the K-5 and it seems to work without an issue, even with the Minolta module, though I had to use it in full manual mode. Hope these links work

I picked up a DX-8R locally yesterday for $40 (new in box no less!). It has a Minolta module on it, and checking the trigger voltage shows 1.85 volts. Trigger voltage on my Pentax flash indicates 2.7 volts, so I'm thinking it should be safe to use on the K-5. It fits beautifully on the 50 F2.8 Macro. Does anyone have experience with this unit on a K-5? I have tested it with a wireless trigger and it does work, but it is somewhat awkward to use that way.

FWIW I have the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro, and it is a great lens as far as I'm concerned. I have taken many, many great shots with it. You can pick them up for about $150. Maybe I got lucky and got a good copy, but I have no problem recommending it :-)

I agree with the advice to go with the K-5. I got mine a couple of weeks ago (body only) as an upgrade to my K-x. I love the K-x, and debated for a long time before taking the plunge. The K-5 is just amazing, and my only regret is that I didn't get it sooner!!

Get the K-5 and don't look back. :-)

Thanks for posting the link. The data available for the K-x is a little sparse to be relevant, but it's a relatively new camera. The good news is the other Pentax cameras seem to be fairly reliable. So odds seem to be good that my issue is an anomaly - I hope so :-)

Well, still no word from Ned Bunnell, or anyone at Pentax. Very disappointing. Pentax service is doing the repair, not under warranty. I hope this is not an indication of Pentax's dedication to customer service and customer satisfaction. Exceptional customer service starts with dedication, and real commitment from the top down - I hope you are listening Ned!

If senior management does not live and breath customer service, and customer satisfaction, no one else in the organization will either. I am in support, and have been for 15 years. Our senior management is 100% committed to customer service/satisfaction. If a customer Tweets about bad service, or posts on Facebook, or sends e-mail to executive staff, all the alarms go off. Managers are calling/contacting the customer and we bend over backwards to ensure the customer is happy. Happy customers talk to their friends about their great experience, unhappy customers tell the world - through Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube etc. The power of the Internet, and social media can spread the news like wildfire.

Even more disappointing, I reached out to Ned Bunnell, the President of Pentax Imaging, to get his input. I sent e-mail, and a couple of Tweets, directly to Ned, but I did not get any response, not even an acknowledgement. That is disturbing to me. Someone in his position may not have time to acknowledge my concern personally, but he should have someone who responds to these messages on his behalf, even if it is to say "Sorry, this is the best we can do".

Very, very disappointing in my book, and a missed opportunity to strengthen my position as a Pentax Promoter.

Pentax wants $270.00 to repair my K-x - $59.00 parts, $180.00 labour, plus taxes. Since I have less than 10,000 actuations I e-mailed them and asked them to cover it under warranty - I consider this a premature failure. They offered to cut the labour by 50%, which is generous, but I am still very disappointed. The shutter should not have failed with less than 10,000 actuations. This should be a warranty repair in my book.

Thanks to everyone who replied. So if the MTBF is 100,000 actuations, on average, I'd have to think that a failure at less than 10,000 is not common, and could probably be considered premature. Honestly, my old film SLR went 30 odd years without an issue, and was still working perfectly when I sold it this spring. To have a mechanical failure in my shiny new DSLR in such a short time is very disappointing. I bought the camera to use it and enjoy it. And i have really enjoyed using the K-x up to now - enough that I bought a K-5 last week. I hope I have not made a mistake with that.

Thanks. I hope they'll help me out. Henry's offers an extended warranty, so I may go back and get that for the new K-5.

We have a photo club at our office, and several of the folks here have asked me to bring in the K-5 to check it out. You never know, we may convert some Canikon users :) :). The K-5 is just amazing :)

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the shutter block on my K-x is causing an issue after only 8000 - 9000 actuations, but I am past the 2 year warranty period. I'm disappointed with Pentax's response so far - $270 to repair this issue - $40 for the part, and $180 to install it - plus misc and taxes.

I'm going to try sending a letter to Pentax to pleade my case :). Maybe they can offer some coverage - after all, I have bought quite a bit of kit from them (the K-x, AF 540FGZ, their new 18-135 WR lens, and a new K-5 last Friday) and I am a big promoter of Pentax. Several friends have purchased Pentax as a direct result of my advice.

Does anyone know where the claim of "tested to 100,000 actuations" came from? I see this in a lot of reviews, but I'm not sure if it is documented on the Pentax site.

Thanks

Hi All,

Chiming in a little late. My K-x developed a problem at around 8000-9000 actuations. The flash will no longer sync with the shutter (or vice versa), from 1/60th sec to 1/180th sec. Sent it to Pentax Canada and they say its the "shutter block". $40 for the part - $180 labor to install it :(. And it's not under warranty as I am outside of the 2 year warranty period, and I can't find my receipt from Best Buy :(. I'm trying to see if they will cover it since 9000 actuations seems quite low for a failure like this to occur.

Does anyone know where the "tested to 100,000 actuations" claim came from? Is it posted on the Pentax website anywhere, or is it an "urban legend"?

Thanks all
