thanks Paul - yes mostly playing in JPEG territory. Switch across to RAW when I get serious, which is not often ;-)

Thanks Adam, Kirk & Bob,
Great tips - much appreciated. 'USER5' on my KP now labelled 'MONOCHROME' & works a treat. I've just read Bob's tip and will probably revise things to align with that - great idea!

Cheers
Geoff

Single-Step switch to monochrome on a KP

Hi,
I'm slowly learning my way around a relatively new Pentax KP. I am looking for a single-step option to set me up for a monochrome photo. I know I can use the Function C1 + Setting dial combination to take me there, as well as accessing this same functionality through the menu system . . . both operations requiring multiple steps. What I am looking for is a means to program a single-step direct path to this feature rather than having to fiddle with multiple controls. i.e. push button, take mono photo then either camera reverts to its previous colour setting, or another push of the same button takes me back there. Hoping someone with some experience out there can point me in the right direction

K-7 Firmware updates

be VERY careful with the update - (don't do it if you don't need to would be my advice) - I followed all recommendations to the letter re: having a fully charged battery before I start etc etc. The update process froze part-way through, leaving me with an unusable camera which needed a warranty return to base for a new main board installation. I was NOT a happy camper.

Hi all - still getting the black photos occasionally. Is there any way I can post a file attachment to this site in its original form with the EXIF info intact?

cheers

Hi all - I still haven't got to the bottom of my black pictures. I've uploaded one (attached), although the upload process seems to shrink the file, so it may have corrupted the exif info in the file header.

Any suggestions anyone (assuming you can read the attached file)?? - this is my second memory card - another 4GB SanDisk Extreme (30MB/s) card. - I'm getting the same symptoms as with the original card, although this may by a problem with the batch of cards as I bought them at the same time.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

On the black pictures front (I started another thread on this - 'Pentax K7 - Black Pictures') By a process of elimination, I've just about narrowed the issue down to memory card problems.

I'm using 4GB SD cards with a 30MB/Sec transfer rate (probably an overkill in speed), & am now re-formatting the card each time I transfer the photos to PC - so far without any more black pics (fingers crossed . . . )

K7 - black pictures?

Think you might be onto something with the card thing - Trying to re-create the problem today, I ended up in a position where I couldn't take a photo that WASN'T black. (I also noticed that the camera in this state starts reporting a flat battery, even though it's not)

Anyhow, when trying to revive the camera to where it would at least take SOMETHING, I re-formatted the memory card. First attempt allowed me to again take pictures (grossly underexposed), so I re-formatted it again & the camera now seems to be operating normally???

The logic in this smells like bad memory card as you suggest, so from here on I guess its a process of elimination . . . watch this space

Thanks to all who replied - if it happens again, I'll upload a picture or 2 as others have suggested.

K7 - black pictures?

I've recently purchased a K7 DSLR and have been learning to use it with a Pentax DA 1:4 17-70mm zoom lens. On a couple of seemingly random occasions I've managed to capture a completely black photo - i.e. a screen full of NOTHING with, perhaps, a thin horizontal line. In case you're wondering, No, I haven't been snapping in the dark or with the lens cap on:)

I phoned our local (Australian) support people & received the advice that I may have a memory card problem, or perhaps I could try a firmware upgrade. I went the firmware upgrade path & followed the installation instruction to the letter . . . i.e. make sure the battery is fully charged before you start, don't interrupt the upgrade process etc etc etc. or I could end up with an unusable camera. Sure enough, part way through the upgrade, Murphy's Law struck home, the upgrade process froze and Yes, they were right ! . . . I ended up with an unusable camera.

Cutting a long story short, roughly 2 weeks later I had my camera back with a new main circuit board (free of charge apart from my initial freight costs) and a firmware upgrade.

Guess what? Camera works fine (most of the time), but I still get the odd black photo. Shutter is releasing, or at least sounds like it's releasing, flash works OK when I choose to use it, but still the odd very annoying black photo in the group.

Anyone out there with similar experiences? Could it be an intermittent memory issue? Any other suggestions?? Am I doing something dumb?

Cheers

g'day from inland Australia

(No, we don't all live in coastal cities here :) ) This probably sounds really dumb - and it is - but I've just woken up that I can use all my old Pentax P30 lenses on a DLSR. So, after a few years of playing with small P&S units I've taken the plunge with a K7 (minus the expected expenditure on new lenses !)

Wow - what CAN'T I do with this thing ?

I've had a few teething problems though - when the camera was only about a week old, I attempted a firmware update which 'froze' part-way through the update, rendering the camera unusable and resulting in a return to base for a new circuit board. The camera also takes occasional all-black photos for no reason I've been able to find yet. (Yes, I did remove the lens cap:rolleyes:) Flash works, shutter appears to release, but no picture . . . ?

Anyhow, I guess I'll watch for other posts on this issue & throw in any other input which might help others along the way

cheers

k7 won't work after firmware upgrade

I have downloaded firmware update version 1.02 package for my K7 & followed the installation instructions in the included readMe file to the letter. However, when I got to the actual update process in the camera, it all started OK with a screen saying:

UPDATING

PHASE 1/2

The instructions state the update process should take around 90 seconds. After staring at this screen for 25 minutes, I eventually accepted that the update process had locked-up & I turned the camera off. It now appears, as per the Pentax warning, to be 'inoperable'. My question is: Is there anything user-recoverable at this point, or am I up for a trip to the Pentax doctor??
