Ditto. This has been my experience exactly. Love my K-x, by the way.

Scott, that does make sense. I'm using a K-x, though, and I don't have those normal/DOF/Speed/MTF options you're speaking of. That is somewhat similar to the K-x's scene modes - but I thought the camera auto-selected scene modes in "Auto," not "P"?
So I guess I'm still confused (not your fault at all - your explanation made sense) about exactly what the K-x manual means by "Program Line."

Guys, thank you for your answers on this post .So, in regards to the note above about "P" mode, when the Pentax manual refers (as it often does) to "Program Line" - is this the fixed image parameters that you are referring to?
I.e., the manual basically says that in P mode the camera follows "Program Line" - which is rather unhelpful for a newbie. But now I'm assuming that the program line = these fixed parameters you are talking about. Which would make a lot of sense.

No, they're not RAW. Just jpegs.
As I play with the Pentax software more it looks pretty powerful, but I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out the workflow.
Irfanview seems to be working fine, so I may use that for the quick reviews and removal (or PEF processing), then Photoshop Elements for the editing.

I've usually used Windows Photo Viewer as a really easy way to breeze through a photo shoot and get rid of the shots that I obviously don't want. But on my Windows 7 machine (or maybe with this monitor) the pictures look terrible in Windows Photo Viewer - pixelated, the colors messed up, etc. They look fine when opened in Photoshop, so it's not a photo problem or overall monitor problem.
What simple and easy software can I use for quick photo reviews of big batches, before I get into the serious editing?
(or does anyone know why the photos appear distorted in Windows Photo Viewer?)
Thanks for dealing with a newbie question...

Thank you for this explanation - I did not know how to do this.

I am using it in M mode. I just tried it again in a completely different setting - indoors where the correct metering was about 1/40. At first it registered 1/3. But I kept pushing the green button and after 5 or 6 presses, it suddenly got it right. From then on it seemed to get it right, so it did seem like it just needed to get unstuck.
When I take the lens off and turn the aperture ring it seems to work fine.

K-x, 50mm M 1.7
I'm outside in broad daylight. Press green button to get metering through manual lens. Result: 1/4000 (etc). Moments later I press it again: 1/3 second. 1/3 second. 1/3 second. Then back to 1/4000 (etc.).
Does this mean something in my lens is sticking?

FYI I actually wrote Pentax about this, and got a reply from some upper-level manager who basically said the flash intro on the website that mentioned time lapse was in error, and that he'd pass along the suggestion. Which is code language for "don't expect this any time soon in a firmware update." I imagine they are reserving it for the next steps up the Pentax line.

I am successfully using my M 50mm 1.7 with my new K-x, using the Pentax instructions: here
Will those settings have any serious impact on the camera in other modes? I.e., when I use the kit lens or another AF lens, will it be important for me to change one of those settings back again?
