LV cames handy when you have to shot with camera in a insane position... for example when I shot from the ground up I use a very low tripod, compose with LV then disable it and proceed as normal with a 2 second delay shot.

In this comparison you can see the same photo, the first has an exposure of 2 sec, the second of 30 sec.
In the attachment there is a snapshot of exif data of both photos.
The strange is that in the 30s one there is a large amounts of "ghost lights".
Anyone knows if this is a known problem, a software bug or a malfunction of my K7 sensor?

Companion Travel camera

Hi all
I own a K7 with WR zooms and some other lens, I'm quite satisfied with both picture and hardware quality... since carrying all the hardware can be uncomfortable in some situation I'm searching for a small compact camera to bring with me as everytime companion, ie. at my children party or to give to my wife... that compact camera should have
- low weight/dimensions
- a good picture quality, even if not excellent as my K7
- movie mode in FullHD, zooming while rec
- if possible shoots raw, but not an important issue

The best that fits into what I would buy is the canon s95... but does not zooms while rec... so I've considered the canon SX220, NikonS8100/S9100... but they don't seem to have a good picture quality... they are far from s95... and very very very far from K7 !

Awaiting for any suggestion or thought you want to share...

Problem on K7 with sigma lenses

Hi Adam

First of all thx for your reply.
As for you inputs I've done some other test on focusing and I'm convinced that it is not a focusing problem. I've attached another image with shots on a focusing chart at different AF regulations (-10, -5, 0, +5, +10) and seems to me that AF works correctly and there is non front or back focusing problems.
I've also attached another comparison of a shot taken with the sigma at f2.8 and another taken with an old fixed focal pentax lens at f2 (both 50mm). In normal conditions I would expect the sigma to perform at least as the pentax... while the shots shows an unacceptable behavior of the sigma... the image talks by itself.

I think that sigma lenses may be difective... don't know what kind of problem it may be but doesn't seems to me a focusing problem... do you still think it may be a focusing problem ?

Problem on K7 with sigma lenses

I have a K7 with WR zoom lenses and several other lenses inherited from my previous 35mm equipment, I'm fully satisfied except for one of them; the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 EX, which has a problem: the image shows a sort of "halo"/"glare" expecially at full aperture (f2.8), it decreases when closing diaphragm and disappears definitively at f/8. Please look at the attached image. The first series shows the same photo on the sigma at different aperture, the second shows same photo done with 3 different lenses all at full aperture, two of them are inherited from 35mm, the last is the WR zoom.

My first thoughs was oriented on a focusing problem, so I have played a little bit with focus adjustment but it does not seems to produce any changes in the problem.
I really don't know what could be...

anyone of you can help ?

35mm / APS-C -

I've done this simple experiment: put the DA lenses on a my MZ5n body... and I've seen...

This probably because the concept is not well understood or well explained. Part of the problem is in the fact that camera companies are not so transparent, the K7 manual is not very clear for a 35mm experienced guy but APS beginner...

Look at how many people explained the same concept in so many different ways...

I'm considering to take a degree in light physics :p
anyway now I hope that is clear for me...

thanks all again !

First thanks to all of you for the answers.

I know that a given focal length lense produces the same image on both cameras, the problem here is that the measuring unit: focal length on the DA lenses are expressed in their 35mm eqivalent ?
Yes, else there's no way to explain the behavior.

Or Am I wrong ?

As far as I know a 35mm focal lenght in the old 35mm film format should be equivalent to a 50 mm in the APS-C format used by my K7...
That said...
I attach two shots,
- the first one has been made with the Pentax DA 18-55 AL WR at 35mm, this is the zoom lenses that came with my K7
- the second one has been made with the Pentax FA 20-35 AL at 35mm, this is a several yars old lenses that I used with my old Pentax MZ5n, a 35mm camera

I expected that the photo taken with the "old" FA 20-35 was much "tele" that the one taken with the DA 18-55... but as you can see the snapshots are practically identical...
The same happens with the DA55-200 vs my old Tamron SP 70-210... at max focal length they take the same telephoto... while I expected the tamron to have a much narrow angle...

how do you explain that ?

I would do some post processing on the third one: apply a red filter and turn to B&W, remove the unfocused handrail on the right-down corner and finally adjust lighting... it should became a really good one.

Agree with previous poster. The first shot is great.
The second is too busy for me too, I don't like it.
About the third... I really like colors, while light is too "flat", I thing also that shooting closer would be better, the unfocused flowers disturbs the composition.

I've read reviews at Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ : seems that K7 has not much more that K20, at least for my needs, image output at RAW is indistinguishable... so probably K20 may be a more valuable solution considering the the price is significantly lower, closer to the Kx...

Thanks for the suggestion.

The main reason that drive me to K7 over Kx is the build quality and solidity...
May I ask you which are the main reason why you prefer K7 ?

After all seems that Image quality of Kx is better...

Hi all
I'm a 25 years old pentax fan, my current hardware consists of
Pentaz MZ5n + a second Vivitar Body
Pentax 20-35 f/4 AL
Pentax 50mm f/2
Sigma 28-70 f/2.8
Tamron 70-210 f/3.5
Zenitar 16mm f/2.8
I had always shot with Fujichrome 100-200, Velvia, Agfa RSX 50-100 and Ilford FP4 for B&W, until a few time ago I've also printed my own B&W photos with a DURST M370 B&W
Now I'm moving th the digital world and hope in your support... I will let you know when I will choose which new hardware to buy.

Hope to enjoy the forum

Hi all
I'm an old pentax fan that still owns a MZ5n and several good quality lenses, all for 35mm.
I was away from photos from several years due to family reasons (kids...) and used a small compact fuji camera for family/kids photos... but now it's time to restart my hobby: hiking and shooting or traveling and shooting.
I'm quite undecided among Pentax Kx and Pentax K7: at first glance K7 seems to fit much more what I want: not too much small, sealed, seems more power-user oriented but it has also some weakness... from what I read around it is weak at high ISOs while Kx has a much better high ISO quality and a significant lower price...

considering also that I want to use my 35mm lenses that ranges from 16mm to 210mm (~ 25-300)

I would like to hear your experiences and suggestions...

Do you think that buying body + 2 lenses worths the additional price ?
