The picture was accidently overexposed because of the sticky aperture of the lens - set at f8, but the acture aperture was f2.8. Thought it looked interesting though.

I recently was hit by the well known aperture problem with my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8. The aperture blades are stuck wide open. I guess I will send it in for repair, but the question is if I would be able to get it back before the holidays. Really bad timing. From what I've read it seems to take 2 - 3 weeks, is there quick fix I can do at home other than unmounting and remounting the lens? Any other information about this issue that I could use would be appreicated. Otherwise the lens produces really nice images.

Thanks Matt. holy...I don't think I can take pictures like you do...though it shows what the lens can do in good hands.

I managed to grab one of these at Amazon for $299 new. Was this a good deal? I just wanted to make sure I paid fair price and bought a good lens (tho I know it's good). A sample photo or two that would make me feel :) would be appreciated.

Most of the times I use Av and set the ISO manually (but the camera does allow auto ISO) to give me the combination of shutter speed and aperture I want. I will try TAv next time and see if I like it. I have limited experience with PP software, tried noise reduction with photoshop CS3, but noticed noise reduction tends to unsharpen already soft images? But I could very well be wrong as I didn't spend much time with PP. I guess I agree in some situations (like in my dark house) I'm forced to go ISO 1600 with K10D.
I guess I'm ordering the hood today and see if that makes difference. Will post some pics if available.

Wow... thanks guys. I think I'm getting there. So I will start looking out for a hood (i'm pretty sure she'll allows extra $10 ;), and just wait for the kid to take a breath...I'm not in the market currently for a flash...never liked the color tone it creates in my house...but sounds like one of those will become inevitable.
I actually have owned a superb copy of A 50mm f1.4 for long years, which produces great images shutter by shutter all the way down to f1.4 - when in focus that is. Lately I notice my hand getting slower and the kid getting faster, decided MF is no longer working for me.
As a general rule, what is the minimum shutter speed that would allow capturing running kid, assuming the AF speed is not an issue? I never seem to get anything better than 1/60 in the house, w/o flash.

I recently acquired a FA 50mm f1.4. I bought this lens so I can catch my hyperactive 2 year old in action - tried f2.8, will not do. Cosmetically and mechanically the lens does not seem to have any issue. I took about 200 photos so far with this lens, mostly indoors or low light conditions. The results are very disappointing. Very soft at wide aperture - up to f2.8 - even then the images still look flat, no color punch, plain bokeh, etc.
I read the reviews from others and it seems most people experience similar issues - soft until f2.8. I don't understand.... What good is 50mm f1.4 if you cannot use it indoors or in low light conditions.
Perhaps I'm missing something here? I played with different ISO settings and apertures but can't find a magic way to mate this lens with my K10D. Is there a trick or a particular setting that makes this lens work? My wife has me on very short leash these days so I cannot afford anything more expensive like DA 55mm.

Hello folks,
I am new to this forum (well, have been reading for quite a while). I finally raised some funds for a new 70-200mm f2.8 :D and wondering which one to buy. I just spent most of my business hours reading the posts about Tamron vs Sigma (and vs Pentax 50-135), so I guess I'm pretty well informed about the pros and cons of each, especially the slow and sometimes inaccurate AF issue of the Tamron. So my question is how slow is Tamron specifically on the K10D compared to other bodies. I shoot mainly my 18 mo old boy (moving constantly at lightspeed), so fast focusing is high priority, but I'm also attracted to reportedly higher IQ of the Tamron. I heard that it's not really all that slow on bigger bodies like K10D, K20D, or K-7 having beefier in-body motor, but would it be good enough for fast moving subjects indoors?
