Buy K3 or K5 II's?

The K-5 was an awful camera compared to the K-5IIs, truly dreadful AF and the images generally rather soft. Believe me, I have both the K-5, the K-5IIs and a K-3.

For me, the K-5IIs is still my camera of choice of all three. There. I said it.

K3 Owners with No Mirror Flap Problem

Unfortunately, I'm not sure it's going to stand as accurate for not having an issue just because you haven't run into it. I don't think we can clear a batch of serial numbers based on "no issues"... because really, this early in the camera's release, it's more accurate to say "no issue so far."

Put it this way... if I'm running into the issue, on average, every 3000-5000 shutter actuations, it could be a while for some people to have the issue crop up. Because we can't reliably reproduce it on command (unless you're willing to put some heavy actuations on your camera), and don't know what causes it, it's impossible to say that just because you haven't had a problem yet, you won't have it, or that your K3 is unaffected.

You could report here that you haven't had a problem and in a week or a month or two, suddenly you do.

I'm not trying to be a downer... and I really hope the people who haven't had problems never do... but reporting lack of problem, at least at this point, isn't really reporting anything at all... yet.

Doesn't mean not to collect the data, just understand the flaw in this method.

Update 3/18/14 - K3 has now been returned

I returned it today. I had written to Pentax last week hoping they would let me keep it for a while (while still giving me a new K5-IIs) so I could keep testing, but I didn't hear back, so I just had to make the decision to be rid of the problems. If I wasn't worried about paying work, I would have held off a little longer, but for the sake of my clients, I can't keep having these instability issues.

Just because I don't have it anymore doesn't mean I will forget about all of you… I will keep tracking the problem in the other thread, and report the issues to the contacts I've had at Pentax. I'm also working on a write-up/article on the whole issue and experience, likely to be published on Steve Huff's website. I've held off a long time on it because I was hoping Pentax could get it fixed…

Hopefully, I'll have no issues with the two K5-IIs bodies I picked up today… regardless, I'm buying the extended warranty TODAY. LOL

Shutter Flutter Panic using BG-5 Battery Grip On Low Battery
Posted By DRabbit
Replies: 46

It's not caused by third-party batteries. I've used nothing but genuine Pentax batteries and I suffer through the mirror-gone-crazy problem regularly. I shoot time-lapse professionally, so I run into it a lot, but it's not the time-lapse itself that causes it. It just appears to be a crap-shoot when it happens, no way to predict it, and the only way, so far, to replicate it consistently, is to run your camera in time-lapse mode for a while, not just 400 exposures. Since people have the problem when not shooting time-lapse, my theory is that the only reason it shows up more for me is purely the law of averages because of how much use my K3 is getting.

It's not the grip either. I don't even own the battery grip.

It doesn't appear to be temperature or battery voltage spikes/surges. At least if it's either of those, it's not being reported accurately in the EXIF data. I saw no real anomalies in EXIF data of the photos leading up to mirror-flap. The last photo before the issue shows no unusual temperatures or unexpected battery voltage changes. Could be it's not being recorded accurately, depending on where the temperature sensor is, or if the voltage spike/surge is happening in the split of a second after the last photo is taken... but as of now, evidence doesn't seem to support it being temperature or voltage.

If you don't shoot time-lapse or weddings/events professionally, journalism or even birds/animals/nature, it's probably not an issue to worry too much about... at least in the sense that it will cause you wide-spread problems. I shoot architecture professionally, and if I weren't doing time-lapse, I'd probably keep the K3 and not worry too much about it. However, if you have to depend on it to get specific shots that you cannot "do over", and if the camera is getting heavy use, then I'd rethink relying on the K3 until this issue is fixed.

Let's start a list so we can get a sense of how many people are having the problem, and details that might be helpful.

Here's the rules:

Answer this thread only ONCE... just to report in.
Discussion is happening about the issue in plenty of other threads already. Let's keep this just a list of victims.

Update 4/9/14: I've held off for a long time leaving a negative review on Amazon.com, hoping for a solution from Pentax... but now that this issue has dragged on for months, I really felt it was necessary. Pentax needs to address this issue and not sweep it under the rug. I encourage other users to do the same.

Update 5/21/14
As of May 21, 2014, Ricoh/Pentax seems to finally be acknowledging the problem, though without a fix for it yet. The following posts are replies that users got when they used the Ricoh Support Form to report their issue:

- https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/263060-k-3-mirror-flutter-reply-ricoh.html

If you've had the mirror-flapping problem yourself, you should report it here and then report it to Ricoh directly. If you are in the USA you can use their web form ( http://ricohwebform.tosystems.com ). If you are in another country, you can look up the contact information here ( http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/globalsites/inquiry.html ).

Update 6/11/14 - A Fix?
There has been some movement by Pentax/Ricoh that seems to indicate they have a fix for the problem, to "resolve/reduce" (as stated by them) mirror-flapping in the K3. A member (Twino4u) was told to send his K3 in for repair for the mirror-flap issue, and it was indicated to him that it would be a software/base firmware update only a service center could do. I emailed my contact at Pentax USA who confirmed that K3 owners who have the problem can now send their camera in for "repair/adjustment". The exact correspondence seems vague, but it is at least progress in a positive direction. See the link below for the exact correspondence:

- https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/265531-k-3-mirror-flop-fix-ricoh.html (more discussion of fix)

If anyone who has had the problem sends their camera in for repair and is willing to do some extensive testing to confirm that the issue is indeed fixed, that would be great. I would do it myself, but I don't have a K3 any longer, at least not at this point. If I didn't just come out of the hospital and wasn't anticipating some pretty steep medical bills, I'd buy another just to go through this process myself.

Update 7/10/14 -- Firmware 1.10
Firmware version 1.10 is now available. There was a rumor that firmware released in July would includes a fix for the mirror-flapping problem. There is no specific mention of this, or indication that mirror-flapping/crazy-mirror/runaway-mirror/mirror-overrun has been addressed with firmware 1.10, at least according to the Ricoh/Pentax website. "Improved stability for general performance" may or may not include the mirror-flapping problem. Without significant testing, or official word from Ricoh/Pentax, there's no way to know at this point.

Update 7/17/14 -- Firmware 1.10
There have been a couple of reports of users having the mirror-flapping problem with the latest firmware. There's a separate thread on the issue, but I also encourage users with the problem to include their report here as well, and report it to Ricoh/Pentax!

Update 11/7/14 -- Firmware 1.11
There have still been a couple of reports of users having the mirror-flapping problem with the latest firmware, though it seems as though Ricoh/Pentax has written into their firmware a provision to slow the problem down, or stop the camera all together mid-flapping, as a way to generally minimize mirror-flapping. While this is obviously progress, it is not a solution (in my opinion). At least as far as I'm concerned, I have completely lost faith that Pentax will ever solve this issue completely in the K3. Others can hold out hope for future bodies. I still maintain the opinion that if you want the most reliable Pentax, it's the K5-II or K5-IIs.

As of today, 11/7/14, I will no longer be updating this thread.

- - - - -

When you post about your problem…

Include your serial number and purchase date.

Describe when and how the crazy mirror lockups occurred, and what resolved it.

Include any camera settings and setups you can remember.

Include your firmware version.

Members Reporting the Issue

So far, in the various threads about this issue, between me and Jhmos, we've counted a total of 152 people who have reported having the problem at least once. This is a complete list. The names with stars are the ones that have also reported here in this thread (the ones without stars have reported in one of the other threads linked above). I will update the list as more people reply here.

So far, the issue seems to have been reported in serial numbers ranging anywhere from:
482XXXX to 493XXXX (black bodies)
and
2573XXX to 2578XXX (silver bodies)

The names with numbers indicate that the user has had more than one K3 body suffer with this problem.

My report:

I Have Had Two K3s with The Issue.

K3 #1 was purchased in November, 2013.
K3 #2 was received from local retailer as exchange for first, in February, 2014. Serial #4859575

Crazy Mirror Sickness Occurred:

Problem has been a recurring one for me, when I shoot time-lapse photography. Has happened more times than I can count now.
Popping battery out stops the crazy mirror flapping.
Sometimes turning it on and off multiple times stops it.

Typical Settings/Setup When it Happens:

1 or 2 SD cards in the camera.
It has happened with several different brands SD cards.
Av or M mode
Interval of 3 or 4 seconds for 500-700 shots.
Shake Reduction Off (though has happened with it on)
Outdoors and Indoors
10ºF to 50ºF+
No battery grip. All genuine pentax batteries. Has happened with various batteries from old to new.
Has happened using Live View and not using Live View
WB typically set to "daylight"
JPG usually at Medium or Small
Focus is AF.S Select or Spot, but I switch to Manual before I start the time-lapse.

Crazy-Ass Mirror Sickness (CAMS) looks like this (second half of video):

K3 Locking Up (while shooting time-lapse)

I've gotten clearance now from Pentax to send in the 55mm and get a replacement... which I'll likely sell anyway to help fund some of the exchanging that is going on... but I'm glad they are being more than helpful with all this.

Well, considering the price difference between the K3 and the K5-II and IIs, I'm hoping to end up with one of each (with maybe a little out of pocket), otherwise it will likely be two K5-II bodies.

Another interesting thing to note... I'm trying to sell or get the best trade-in value for my Fuji x100 and XE1 right now so I can get my hands on the new XT1, which also has a built-in intervalometer. It'll be interesting to test out, since I'm a Fuji-lover too. Though Pentax will still likely remain my workhorse in the immediate future, I'm glad there are options in other brands I already use and like. Especially since I can't say I'm confident that Pentax is going to fix the issue, and it may crop up on future models (which would make me very sad).

...and with ALL of these, I'll be spending the extra money out of pocket to buy extended warranties. With all the wear-and-tear time-lapse puts on these bodies, it'll be a good thing to have. :D

UPDATE - Running Test Today, Firmware v.1.03

Updated the firmware a little while ago. Guess what? 2 minutes into the new firmware and the camera locked up. No mirror-flap, it just wouldn't respond. I shot video of it and will share later after more testing.

- - - - -

Ya know, this is all very disappointing. It's gotten to a point where I'm starting to feel as though Pentax/Ricoh doesn't think my feedback is helpful, but that I've become more of a thorn in their side that they can't get out. One of my contacts doesn't always respond to my emails anymore, and the other hasn't responded to me now in over a week, despite my basically begging him to communicate with me. I got the go-ahead to take my K3 back to the store I bought it at, but the rep who gave me that clearance has yet to confirm he's communicated it to the retailer (and the last time I talked to the retailer, he had not).

A great number of you may never run into this issue... and for that I'm glad.
I shoot architectural type photography professionally, and but for the time-lapse portion of what I'm doing, Pentax cameras have performed great for me. If I didn't need a camera that runs reliably taking time-lapse shots at short intervals for hours at a time, I wouldn't be worried about a strange little fluke of a problem that the company seems to have a hard time tracking down the cause of. I'd imagine most professional photographers could rely on their Pentax gear without much cause for alarm, because the likelihood this issue will ruin your outcome or that one important shot is probably, ultimately very small. My use in the professional arena appears to be somewhat unique.

The silver lining in all of this is that as much testing as I've done to the K3, I've also done to the K5-II... and the K5-II has been rock solid. Not a second of trouble in all the same conditions at all the same shoots. So at least we know it's possible for Pentax/Ricoh to produce a dependable, well performing camera. What is frustrating is that their newest flagship model, with all it's wonderful new features appears not to be that camera. At least for me and my purposes.

Keep in mind, I'm putting excessive amounts of wear and tear on these cameras... so if anyone has the ability to do testing, it's me. I've been shooting time-lapse at least once a week since November, and have probably put something like 85,000 shutter actuations on the K5-II since that time.... and a similar amount between the two K3s that I've had. Some of you will never put that kind of wear on your camera in its lifetime.

I'm not at all suggesting that wear-and-tear is the reason for the runaway mirror lockup. Considering the issue happened basically straight-out-of-the-box new, we know that isn't the case. What I am saying though is that because I can put 5,000-10,000 shutter actuations on my camera in one day, it's pretty obvious why I run into the issue more often than most, or why Pentax may not see this as a wide-spread, serious issue. If it only happens, on average, once every 5,000 shutter actuations, the average customer is going to run into it pretty minimally... at least in theory.

Trust me, I'm not making excuses for them... to the contrary, I'm quite annoyed and disheartened at this point. I don't WANT to give up the K3. In every other way I am truly impressed by the camera and the K5-II is a step backwards. They have tried to help me, and I have no reason to believe they won't exchange my 2nd K3 at this point either, but it isn't a solution to the problem, only a solution to my predicament at the moment. If it is never fixed, does that mean we'll all have to worry about the same issue coming up again in their next model? At this point, I'd say that is likely, and that is quite unfortunate.

I will keep you posted, and will post video later depending on my outcome with v.1.03.

---------- Post added 03-11-14 at 11:24 AM ----------

Well that didn't take long

About 40 minutes in, crazy mirror lockup with firmware 1.03.

And, when the camera locks up, it loses all settings. You'll see that at the beginning of the video.

NOPE.
Update:

It's not live view or the number of SD cards in the camera. I was shooting today, only one SD card in camera and avoiding live-view like the plague, and the problem still cropped up again. I'm done. As soon as I have the go-ahead from Pentax, the K3 is going back in exchange for a K5-II (or two of them, considering the price difference now).

I've been patient enough. Can't be patient anymore.

Such a shame...

The mAh rating has to do with how long he battery will last, not how much voltage it will put out.
That being said I wonder how exact the voltage levels are actually matched on third party batteries.
Most devices tolerate a range of voltage, but there may be something wrong with a component on some of these cameras.
I hope folks are recording this info in the serial number database here, we may be able to see a trend such as date of manufacture or serial number relationships. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-serial-number-database/?do=viewserials&id=495

Interesting Update?

So I was out shooting time-lapse for a client for about 6 hours. This is the first day that I did not have the crazy mirror-flap issue. The camera performed well. What was different you ask?

Two things. First, I only had one SD card in the camera. I had the second in my pocket instead of in the camera's SD#2 slot.

Second, I avoided using live view. I think I only used it once all day, and I was SURE to turn live view off before starting the time-lapse.

I have another shoot on Monday. I am going to try to replicate this scenario again and see if I have a problem. This is the most optimistic I've felt since this whole thing started. While I was only out for about 5-6 hours today, I'm feeling a little more confident that the issue really may be either live-view or the 2nd SD card (though I'm leaning more towards live-view, because that makes more sense to me).

Let's see what happens Monday…

Great pictures, well done!

About 3 weeks ago near the Park Office at Gooseberry. Lower end of the river with Lake Superior in the background.

Later in the day up in Grand Marais, gulls on the shelf ice in the harbor. A week later coming back down the Gunflint Trail across the Sawtooth Mountains the lake was frozen solid as far as the eye could see. First time in decades the worlds largest freshwater lake has frozen solid.

Spent 4 nights and 5 days at the end of Gunflint Trail on Gunflint Lake. From the center of the lake North is Western Ontario, Canada. The 18-135 used here did OK but with the current Pentax lens sale took a chance and ordered the DA*16-50 this morning.

The picture I posted a couple of pages back of the deer looking in the window at the dog was also at the cabin.

This is the FluCard Product page from Ricoh Imaging Japan. Operating the camera with card is fully described with pictures. The 15 page English language manual is available for download HERE and at the bottom of the page.

I thought this might help.

The 18-135 is not prone to AF motor failure. It is my preferred travel lens due to convenience and weathersealing. If you shoot jpg you may want to turn lens correction on, since this lens does have some visible distortion.

Regarding the K-3 I wouldn't test anything in particular. Just start using it :)

I'm pretty sure that all of these (including the Targus-labeled versions) are made by Icorp (which also sells them under their own Tumax brand).

Welcome to TUMAX ← particularly, "In addition to producing our own merchandise, we also offer customized design service and the manufacture of private label products to suit the needs of our clients. OEM and ODM customers are welcome."

The VS-510P looks to be a variant of the DPT5 Series and the VS-260 from the DSL28 Series.

The DTP5 is available as the Cactus AF50 from Gadget Infinity for about $70 less. Cactus AF50 P-TTL Camera Flash / Speedlite for Pentax - Gadget Infinity

Nothing particularly special about these photos but i was impressed with how my older Pentax M 50mm f1.4 works with the K30.

The first is at f1.4 and the second is at f8
