How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video

Hello everyone!

After a lot of searching through the forms and help from dflorez, UncleVanya, and whoever made the dropbox link I was able to convert my lens. I had a hard time understanding the process, but I finally figured it out. I decided something this complicated needs a video. In this video I converted the 50-135mm lens, but I understand the process is the same for the 16-50, 60-250, 200, and 300mm lenses. I hope this is helpful to you and Good Luck!

The video is here:

You Tube

Below you will see the process I followed. Again, I have the forums here to thank for giving me this information. I hope it helps you.

I was wondering if you still have this lens or if you sold it? I remember seeing it in the used department for $180,000 and looking up the history of them. Was wondering if you guys maybe decided to keep it for a showpiece considering its rarity.

According to your profile you have a K-5II and a K-7. Any real life pictures from the K-5II that couldn't have been taken with the K-7?
Just out of curiosity; what kind of vehicle do you drive?
Is there any place you go that a less powerful, cheaper vehicle couldn't take you?
My point is, it's not just about the end result. That's why there's a market for both Rolex and Timex.

Pentax K-1 Officially Announced

That is easy zoolander. The nikon stock in australia would have been shipped and priced before the bottom dropped out of the Aussie dollar. Aussies are simply getting better value on anything imported before the dollar fell.
Price of K1 is fair, $1796/0.71c plus 10% GST = $2782. $100 difference to US before shipping and including local warranty. Same price as US seems fair to me.
Aussies are getting D750 for equivalent of US$1490, so it would be the US Nikon consumers being ripped off if it wasn't for the currency changes mentioned above.

Post-Processing Winners - Challenge #132

I was impressed with the number and variety of entries in this challenge.

Rimfiredude: Of all of the entries you submitted, I liked Dirty Lens the best. It reminded me of a snow squall and the effect becomes even stronger if your version is converted into B&W.

Sonrock666: You did a very nice job with your processing. I like the color and detail you produced better than my own original processing. One thing you could have improved was to crop the image to move the lighthouse further away from the center. I found that an 8”x10” crop ratio works really nice.

Damon: Your entry was a pleasant surprise, as I had never considered converting this image to B&W. You went for a “stark contrast” and did a nice job with it.

Clinton: Your processing turned the sun spot into a focal point instead of a distraction. I disliked that sun in my own processing that I cloned it out. You changed my view of this image and I like what you did.

EricK3: You submitted the first entry with a “daytime” look to it. Again, I had never considered going in that direction and I like what you did with the image.

Sumit Floyd Chaterji: The color gradient was an interesting twist to this image. I love how you can actually see that the sun is round. I liked the addition of the vignette, as I thought it strengthened the original composition but I would have liked a darker color.

Todd: You did a very nice job with your first submission but I really like your abstract entry. If that was hanging on a wall in someone’s house, I would have no choice but to come over and have a closer look.

PiotrKrochmal: The minimal color saturation of your entry changed the focal point of the image for me. The focal point shifts from the horizon/lighthouse interaction to the interaction between the sun and it’s reflection on the icy surface. Overall, your processing produced a very wintery feel.

xavrs: I’m honored that your first post to the forum was to the challenge I’m hosting. Welcome and I hope to see your work in many more challenges. You did a nice job with the processing and I also like how you used minimal color saturation.

tsinik55: “aaand another lighthouse” – Your comment is so true with this challenge. Your entry was the first one to show that the color of the lighthouse is red. This was not easy to do when the lighthouse was shot as a silhouette. Nicely done.

Glenn5995: One of the few entries with a tighter crop. The high contrast and having the sun in the traditional rule of thirds position changed the sun into a secondary focal point instead of a distraction. This was not my intent when shooting this image but it works.

margameesters: Another newer member entering their first challenge. Welcome and I hope to see your work in many more challenges. The color in the sky is not very realistic but it did inspire me to play a little with your entry. I found some very fun color combinations occur when you play around by adjusting the hue. I enjoyed your entry very much.

murrelet: I like the pastel coloring you achieved with your processing. On my monitor (and it could just be a difference between your monitor and mine), the dark areas could use just a bit more darkening. This is easily achieved by adjusting the black point with a Levels or Curve layer.

LarsW: You found my crop (The same crop I used). The colors are vibrant and you provided an interesting twist to this image.

darylk: You did a great job bringing out the detail in the snow. This is very close to what the scene looked like when I shot it.

Reddevil Sen: Your rich colors and deep contrast provide another interesting twist to the image. Nicely done.

JHFwp: I love the detail visible with your processing. The B&W conversion makes this image look like it was taken in the dead of winter instead of at the end. Not cropping this image works with your processing, as the retaining wall on the left provides a secondary leading line to the lighthouse. Great job.

whk1992: At first glance I thought you added snow until I saw that the effect was only added to the sky. The “stars” are a nice change of pace for this challenge.

D1N0: I believe you that your entry wasn’t inspired by Todd’s entry. Proof again that great minds think alike. I like the abstract you produced and I love how it emphasizes the pattern in the iron braces.

elpolodiablo: If this was slightly darker, I would have thought you posted my version of this image. I like the detail you found in the snow and I’ll be revisiting my processing to bring it a little closer to yours.

astomn: Brrr indeed. For not having much winter in your part of the country for inspiration, you achieved a very cold look with your high key processing. I don’t do much high key processing so your entry was a pleasant surprise.

Arizona Dave: You did some very interesting things with the sky in #5 and #6. But the one that caught made my day was the Santa entry. Adding Santa to the image made good use of the negative space on the left side of the image and it fit the dates for this challenge perfectly.

ahannan: Welcome to another newer member with a first PP Challenge entry. You successfully pulled a ton of detail out of the shadows and produced a mid-day look. The sun looks out of position for your processing and probably should have been cloned out. Otherwise, I really like what you did.

KDavid: I officially have my first image posted on YouTube thanks to you. I like the effect of the light beams and appreciate you showing us how you did it. This technique would work great for producing star shapes from light sources. The only suggestion I have is to not extend the beams all the way to the to the horizon on the bottom ones. I think they need to fade off into the middle of the sky maybe around the violet/red color transition area to look more realistic.

Now for the hard part; Honorable Mentions: Too many to mention.

3rd Place: Todd
2nd Place: JHFwp

and the winner is ………

Arizona Dave and his Santa entry.

Congratulations Dave and I’m looking forward to working on one of your images in the next challenge.

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for participating in the challenge.

A couple months ago I came across a thread here started by forum member Hegemon, in which he asked if any of the images in the Nat Geo contest could have been taken with a Pentax. Because the window for submission was still open, I decided to roll the dice and enter four images that I was extremely proud of. One of those photos I discovered as being one of the Editor's Favorites out of over 22,000 (!) entries.

That photo is:

The link to the photo at the NatGeo site is here.

If anyone is curious, here are the four images that I submitted initially.

Thanks for looking...man am I excited :D

K-01 be the next cult video camera?

First post, hopefully it won't be the last...

As someone that's used the 5d2 extensively for stills and video over the last 3 years, this is the backup camera I've been waiting for. If the K01 has the features listed and no major jello issues I will be buying one as a "B" cam to my 5d2. I'm new to Pentax and I really wanted to get a K5 for the shake reduction and fabulous DR, but I shoot stills and video so full manual control over exposure and 1080p/24 is a must. If this camera allows for that - PLUS - focus peaking and a mic input this could set the bar for APS-C cameras - depending on video quality. AF capability while shooting is no big deal since you generally have to lock down focus to keep it from hunting while shooting, and there's the noise lenses generate while focusing. It still ticks all the video boxes for a hybrid still/video camera.

I was considering the Fuji Xpro1, but for the price with just one lens I could easily get another 5d2 body and it appears that video is an afterthought from reading the manual. I have a Nex5n that I really like, but it lacks physical buttons, a hotshoe, a mic input, and any sort of stabilization outside of one pretty good 18-55mm kit lens. The Nex7 ticks a few more boxes than the 5n, but it still misses the mark with that damn Sony hotshoe that requires a $189 adapter to use every other hotshoe mounted device on the planet, which drives the price up. Grrrr... The Nex7 has no stabilization either.

The big advantage the K01 has over all other cameras on the market is the shake reduction - the ability to get some IBIS while shooting video is huge since all other options are lens based and the still camera form factor is the most stable while shooting video. Kudos to Pentax for not leaving anything out and coming to market at a reasonable price - Fuji should fear this camera. The lack of a viewfinder is the only real negative, but I always use a Z-finder or a external monitor so I can live with that, still-only shooters opinions may differ. Pending full tests, my X100 and 5n may be on the way out the door and my Zeiss lenses may soon have a new home.

Mika,

Somehow I don't think anyone here cares about what you consider art and what you consider a snapshot. You really need to stop worrying about how crappy other peoples photos are and worry about your own. I do have to wonder if any of the shots you've posted are your own or if you have misappropriated them from other photographers without giving them proper credit.

If the former, and they are your own photos, then nothing in them beyond the shallow DOF and bokeh is anything special and the only thing I see of note is in the one of the girl walking by the storefront with what appears to be grain in the face of the out of focus man in the foreground. This tends to indicate that it is a film photo rather than a digital one. It IS hard to get grain out of a APS-C sensor, but it is just as hard to get it out of a full frame sensor, so I don't see the point of posting a film photo to gripe about some quixotic battle you have embarked on between APS-C and FF.

If the latter, and they were taken by other photographers, then the only thing you are again demonstrating (besides not understanding IP rights) is that your idea of a "non-snapshot" photo is shallow DOF and smooth bokeh (and perhaps "grain"). This tends to indicate that your idea of "art" is rather specific. Not "wrong" mind you, because art is in the eye of the beholder, but I do consider it sadly limited.

What I don't understand is why, if the sensor cannot produce what you crave, are you using Pentax DSLRs. Hoping for an eventual FF platform? May happen with Ricoh at the helm, but I'm not counting on it with the 645D available. Perhaps you should just sell off all your Pentax gear and buy a FF Nikon or Canon. Then every photo you take will become "art" and you will make skads of money. Then you can buy Pentax and smash all the APS-C sensors and start making FF cameras.

Mike

p.s. flickr is a poor poor place to find anything other than snapshots anyway. While some good photographers do use flickr, the shots there are mostly casual, so do not lend themselves to an analysis of the capabilities of something like APS-C vs FF. I suggest you surf some real photo sites, like photo.net, zenfolio, smugmug, or the like.
