In 2017, I was able to drive to Idaho from Washington and shot the eclipse with my Pentax fish eye lens (time lapse) and the DA 560 at totality.
In 2024, I had to fly to get to the path of totality. MFT was the way to go with OM-1 bodies and 12-40 and 150-400 TC more easily packed for travel.
Here are shots from Carbondale, IL. Time lapse with the 12-40 up to totality and quick shots with the 150-400 at totality. The experience made special by a northern cardinal singing it's evening chorus as the light faded and temperature cooled just before totality. |

I can see the reasoning behind the coming of the KF- an affordable entry into the Pentax DSLR world that is doable for many. And it is remarkably rich in features and practical controls as well as remarkably capable at such a reasonable cost... and without the parts problem of the K-70.
However, the KP is for advanced photgraphers looking for compactness in an advanced camera. Some have been as well looking for a DSLR alternative to the advanced APS-C mirrorless offerings, which have basically taken over in attracting this need. In the KP, this alternative was met! It has been and is an outstanding performer in the process of meeting this need. The outstanding quality of images presented in this thread are undeniable proof of this.
After all the criticism with which the KP was met after its release, the story of the KP is a good example of how, once something special is gone its virtues become more recognized in hindsight. People become more aware of how special it is. It remains I think the only model that has maintained such a high price on the used market, the only model after being discontinued, where the price of left-over new stock went UP after discontinuance instead of closeout bargains!! The KP has been a huge success after all.
A KP II COULD also come into being as a success, if done with care. Its virtues of compactness and as a DSLR alternative to high-end APS-C mirrorless should still stand. First and foremost, its few weaknesses would have to be rectified- the vulnerable mode dial and rear screen cable. Then some lessons in advancement as carried forth from the K-3 III. And finally, a secure source for parts, along with better distribution.
Many photographers, some also owning the K-1 II, as is the case now, would greatly value having such an advanced, compact APS-C DSLR. They'd rather give up having 2 card slots, a larger battery, etc. to achieve this compactness, along with such outstanding performance. Many of us here are grateful for such ownership. I too have found my KP plus K-1 II ownership to be a knockout combo!!

Ever since I first started being keen on photography way back at the beginning of the '80s, I have been interested in IR images, especially B&W ones.Back in the days of film I was too distracted by other things (wine, women and song mostly!) to find the time to go through the pfaff of actually taking any IR photos. Now with digital IR is so much more accessible and the recent purchase of a Fuji X-T10 already converted to 720nm band for less than it would cost to get one of my cameras converted has opened up a whole new avenue of exploration. As yet I am only a beginner, and the following snaps are really some of my first experiments in the genre, so please be not too harsh in any critique! I would love to see others' shots here in the IR wavebands, colour and B&W. Hopefully so I can learn more and see just how far one can go with IR. I do feel that it would be far too easy to overuse IR and I recognise the feeling I am like a kid with a new toy at the moment. |
