Wow! I was misinformed! Thanks for all the info.

Is there anything else I should know as far as settings are concerned? Thanks for all the feedback

Yes...the DNG & PEF? I recently read that DNG is the more widely used/accepted format. Is that correct?

Thank you all so much for your help! I needed it broken down to the basics like that, and now I understand much more than I did.

Are there any other settings [on the Kx] that I should change or leave alone?

Thanks again!

I'm asking for someone to help me understand. Questions 1-3 are still unanswered. :D

I have been learning as much as I can about my new Kx & photography in general. One thing that still isn't totally clear is the sRGB vs Adobe RGB. I understand that Adobe has a fuller gamut, but here are my questions:
1) Does this setting matter if I'm shooting RAW?
2) I don't (yet) know what my printer can do, so will it help/hurt if I have Kx set to Adobe?
3) What do all of you more experienced shooters do?

Thanks for your help!

Well for what it's worth, these photos were technically for a handgun license. All handgun license photos are used with the LEO Facial Recognition Database. Therefor, they have to be in focus and of good resolution (overall good IQ).

I had posted this because I was amused at the owner's choice of "personal" gear...especially since I'm sure he could have his choice of any bottom shelf Canon/Nikon for "lowly i.d-type photos". It makes me wonder what other personal Pentax gear he has, and/or what his opinion of it is. I wasn't intending to rag on the guy...I was actually thinking it was pretty cool that he recognizes Pentax at all, let alone actually uses one in his business.

My husband had passport photos made today at one of the only true camera stores in our area. While we were waiting we overheard the owner say several times that he is a Canon/Nikon dealer only. After the photos were taken, my husband came out smiling and whispered, "He took the picture with a Pentax K110D." We found this pretty amusing!

The owner offers beginner film/DSLR classes each month. I was thinking about signing up...now I'm very curious to hear his take on cameras!

I was checking them out just the other day. I went to Pentax's site & found that they are an authorized dealer. Here's the link (I selected the black K-x under "products"). I also googled them, and did not see anything negative.

Hope this helps.

Pentax demise?

I had been looking everywhere for camera stores in any of the three cities near me while I was researching my camera purchase. All I found were the "big box stores". Canikon, Sony, & Olympus were the the only brands in stock. I never got to ask about Pentax because there was never anyone around to help.

I finally found one "mom & pop" (literally) store, but unfortunately they no longer carried cameras. They still do photography, printing, etc. I told them I was looking for a Pentax and they got a pleasantly shocked expression on their faces. The old man replied, "You can't get anything better than a Pentax, but the big stores will not carry Pentax because they will not carry anything that does not turn a profit for them. They only care about quantity, not quality."

After reading the previous posts, I see that this man was quite correct in his assessment. I hate to see stores like theirs fading, especially since I like to actually check a product out in person. But that's just life!

I appreciate the feedback. I honestly didn't have high expectations for them, but would have counted it "bonus" if they were any good.

Thanks again

Hello!

I am so excited to finally enter the DSLR world! I hope to order my kx by the end of the week.
I grew up using film, and switched to p&s in high school. I have always admired quality photos and their creators.

I am a busy mom of 3 precious little girls & 3 dogs. I cant wait to start capturing all that I have been missing since my last p&s died.

Thanks!

Amanda

BTW, my husband still has his old K1000 and a couple of lenses. I posted a question here. Thanks!

My hubby & I recently "rediscovered" his old K1000 during our recent move. He has an SMC Pentax-M 50mm 1:2, a DeJur 135mm 1:2.8, and a DeJur 2x teleconverter.

As a newbie to the DSLR world, would someone be so kind as to teach me about these lenses? What kind of quality are they known for? Does anyone have any pics (or links to pictures) taken with these lenses?

I am eager to learn all I can in my new-found hobby/passion. Thanks in advance for any & all insight given!

~Amanda
