Trading in via Amazon & buying used

Welcome to forum Jesse.

IMHO, this seems like a reasonably fair deal on both ends. I think that is a decent price for both the K20D and the K5, particular in view of the fact that you need do nothing more than a few mouse clicks. Yes, you might be able to do a few dollars better on either end, but with much more effort invested. I personally have no experience with the Amazon trade-in, but overall Amazon does seem to do what they say they are going to do. Another option for selling your K20D would be to investigate what KEH ( http://www.keh.com/ ) offers for it, if nothing else it will provide a benchmark number to judge the Amazon deal by. On the other end, buying from Adorama is a pretty sure thing, I have have had many transactions with them without any issues whatsoever.

Regardless, I'm sure the K5 will be a big help in your efforts, good luck.

Petition To Best Buy: "Carry Pentax."

I cannot imagine why anyone would be critical of this idea. A camera brand is s more or less an ecosystem. The entry level products (of which Best Buy sells a great volume of) provide the resources to develop high end products, while the high end products attract attention to bringing new people into the brand. Done correctly, it is a symbiotic relationship. Whether you are likely to ever buy any photo gear from Best Buy is irrelevant, having the Pentax name appear in their enormous volume of advertising would be of benefit to us all. You have my support in this effort, it is quick, easy and painless to do so and I hope others do the same. Besides, if you really want to be a camera snob, shouldn't you be somewhere spending a king's ransom on Leica's?

I'll take it! A vote for Monochrome is a vote for.... :-)

One would have to suspect that the use of the word "retire" is very eupimistic in this case.

Maybe in Massachusetts that stuff might fly off the shelves.....though I doubt it. As a lifelong resident of Maine, I must say I have never seen the stuff, much less eaten it. The one, true, best way to enjoy lobster is boiling them in seawater on a campfire with a beautiful view of the Maine coast. Can't beat it. Sounds like I just made a weekend plan :)

It would probably help if people actually learned some relatively factual history. History textbooks and education are yet another political tool, one has to dig for, and carefully evaluate data to really learn enough of history in order to apply it's lessons to the present and/or future. While it focuses on the U.S., I suspect this is a universal phenomenon and is a fairly interesting read:http://http://www.criticalthink.info/Phil1301/lieshist.htm

I have to agree with this on principal, I am an engineer after all. I openly admit that both my PZ-1P and 67 are indeed ugly, both they both have enabled me to produced some very aesthetic results. Cameras and lenses are after all only tools, does a painter give a damn whether a brush is attractive or not? On the other hand, I ride a Ducati because those crazy Italians manage to create something that is both beautiful, sexy even, and works like mad :).

Quebec’s emergency law blasted by critics - The Globe and Mail

I am not posting this to criticize, or defend the current insanity in the U.S. Rather, I find it highly sad and disturbing to see that it is apparently spreading like a disease. As I am currently in the process of marrying a Canadian citizen, I am very saddened to see civil rights dying an agonizing death there as they are in the states. I have always considered my northern neighbors to be the most rational folks on the continent, but that is becoming increasingly difficult.

Thankfully that is true. To do so would leave a very small group of Pentax lenses that would work on such a body. I would hope they wouldn't go there, but it is very hard to say what the future holds these days.

Bernie,

I too, have been fascinated with lightning photography, but i have done very little. Hopefully I can point you toward some resources I consulted myself. I personally suggest that you start with some of the simplest techniques, because they involve the least possible amount of expensive equipment. The following link is a how to involving only a lockable remote shutter release, I have have some modest success with more or less the same procedure.

Photography techniques: How to photograph lightning

I am presuming that the K2000d has the input port to connect a remote shutter. If I am wrong on this (I have never personally handled one), I am sure someone will quickly chime in to point out my error (the beauty of the forums).

Some more sophisticated methods of lightning photography involve using a photosensitive device to quickly trigger the camera. There are many different devices on the market to do this ranging widely in price. The following link provides information about capturing lightning using a device called the camera axe. It is actually a device intended to utilize various different sensors to trigger cameras and flashes for many different types of photography. From my limited research, it looks to be the most flexible and economical method of doing such things. Regardless, it's good fun seeing some of the wild shots people have managed.

TPB #1 – Lightning Photography » Tech Photo Blog

Anyway, I hope I have helped lead in the right direction. If nothing else, I hope it provides some interesting reading. I haven't addressed your questions regarding upgrading your camera in order to do this because I personally don't think you really need to in order to get started on this adventure. Most importantly, have fun.

Regards

Framing Pictures for Print

I'm sure we could start a raging debate about Mpix, but I have done a substantial of work with them without a single hitch. Therefore, I'm going with "if it isn't broken....". You may have to go the route a lot of us have of ordering from many different people to form your own conclusion, I am just relating my personal experience FWIW.

The wraps are in fact pricey, but bear in mind that you are looking at a finished product price. The print itself is a minor factor in the cost of the finished product when matting and framing is involved. I personally like them, and they have been great for selling at art/craft fairs as they sell well and are a ton less work for me.

K-5 went to $1499 tonight...

It appears that the world has turned upside down. The Pentax web store is actually cheaper than B&H for K-5 body only. Never thought I would see that.

PentaxWebstore.com: Digital SLR

Pentax K-5 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) (Black) 14748 B&H

The only thing that disturbs me, is that I noticed while perusing B&H, is that this makes the K-5 more expensive than a D7000 (by about $120). I'm not so sure that's a terribly good strategy for K-5 sales.

Framing Pictures for Print

That is a very clever and effective trick suggested by RioRico. Especially when trying to mind a budget, you have to get creative.

However, prints at native aspect ratio are not impossible by any means. Whereas you're not doing your own printing, Mpix for example, offers many compatible print sizes:

Pricing : Mpix.Com

Framing those native aspect ratio prints is a bit more complicated. I make my own frames and mats, but I must admit that it is a definite PITA, and certainly not for everyone. Pre-made frames and mats in less common aspect ratios are out there, but you certainly have to search a bit to find them, and they make the print the cheapest part of the equation by far. Of course, if you go with "wraps", or any of the various "metal prints", framing becomes unnecessary. For what it's worth, I've been selling far more wraps and metal prints lately, they clearly are popular. Good luck in your search.

Either way, it sure looks like a good problem to have. Dear God, I hope we see Pentax use that sensor just as it went with the D700-K5 scenario. With a Pentax version of the "DX mode" it would be like having a free K5 inside.

Amen to that Ron, I recently dumped over 300 gigs worth of old image files, and I don't miss them in the slightest. Having to continuously upgrade computers is expensive yes, but a fact of life. As it is something would end up doing independently of photography, I'm not sure it's entirely fair to assign it completely to the photography budget. I'm running a quad-core AMD with 16 gigs or memory, with an SSD and a 2 mirrored 1TB optical drives and I don't fear the D800 Raw files in the slightest. Remember when we all thought storing all those K10D raw files would be a problem? The forward thrust of information technology in general tends to push such concerns aside on its own.

The question about Ned is a very legitimate one I think, unless I have missed it, there has nothing but silence from Ned recently. It sure looks to me like Adam is doing more for promoting the brand than Ned. How would you like to swap salaries with him Adam?

A lot of potential shortcomings, and maybe even a few positive things about this new camera have been brought up here, but I don't think the OP intended for this to be billionth rant/rave thread about the K-01. This camera is not intended for the demographic of the majority of us here on this forum, I'd dare say most of us here are experienced and fairly serious photographers. The people this camera is intended to attract don't even know camera forums exist.

I personally have no interest in this camera whatsoever. I could care less about video, and I think people hoping for better IQ than the K-5 are dreaming. The idea of having to hold the camera at arms length, shaking like a leaf, is ridiculous to me. But all that is completely irrelevant, as they intended this for someone worlds different than I. If this thing creates 2% of the excitement of the NEX series and the like, it will make PR a heap of money. My hope is that with that heap of money, they can then develop a full line of cameras and lenses. Imagine it if you will, everything from pastel colored cute cameras, to a full on DSLR that can run with the Canikons flagships. If this leads that way, I am all for it in a big, big way.

Wow. I really don't have a clear cut answer to this myself. I felt compelled to respond primarily to communicate the tremendous empathy I feel for both you and this child. If it is of any solace whatsoever, I fail to see how anyone could rationally say you were in any way wrong in your actions. I hope you can find some peace in this matter, I know it would stay with me for quite some time as well. I hope that communicating about this has helped you.

btw: kudos for the the "Kobayashi Maru" reference, well done

Now that is a true statement, and what would the fun in that be anyhow.

I would be extremely interested in such a camera, that is precisely what I've been hoping Pentax would do for quite some. Personally I have no interest whatsoever in tiny cameras, mirrorless, EVF's, or even video. I simply want a tool to create maximum IQ with the features necessary to be in control of the factors of capture, rather than having decisions made for me by software engineers assumptions. Finally, a camera capable of unquestionably professional results that respects the knowledge and skills of seasoned users. Such a thing would do wonders for the Pentax image, and reward many of us that would love to not be apologetic about being Pentax faithful.

Heartily agreed. My stats show a very similar trend. Some of my most viewed images on flickr are IMHO crap images, but they clearly are well key worded and get views daily. Being an exquisite image by itself accomplishes little, as people need to actually see it to become interested, which is not apt to happen in the limitless sea of images that exist online.

I think this sounds like a worthy project, I am anxious to hear of your results as well. The only issue that jumps to mind offhand is the UV filter. The glass is only secured to the frame by a snap ring of sorts, and some are not a particularly close fit. Perhaps taking the glass out of the mounts and putting a small amount of some sort of sealant where the glass meets the frame could do the trick however. Good luck, and have fun.

Agreed with Wheatfield. The proper way to check any level is to compare reading from 180 degrees apart. It is nothing esoteric at all. I must say I would be bothered somewhat by having my ability to perceive that it is off questioned by those who should have gotten it right in the first place.
