Attention All Members! ... IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!

A message from Adam and the PF Moderating Team:

In recent weeks and months we have received feedback - primarily from new members, but a few established ones too - regarding unnecessarily harsh, dismissive, rude and/or aggressive responses, especially (but not only) when someone raises concerns, doubts or criticisms of the Pentax brand.

PentaxForums is a brand-specific enthusiast site, and most of us here are Pentax enthusiasts. New members with critical views of the brand have a responsibility to understand the dynamics of the community they're participating in and consider the effect of their posts, and we've updated our Welcome & Forum Rules sticky post to reflect this, with guidelines for new members. Even so, all of our members - new and old - have a responsibility to respect each other's opinions (even when we disagree), remain courteous and friendly at all times, keep an open mind, and avoid jumping to conclusions, making personal comments or name-calling (terms such as "fanboy" or "troll", for example). We each represent these forums whenever we post, and it's incumbent on us to present our community as welcoming, respectful, tolerant and helpful to all.

We might reasonably hope that our most established members in particular would take this responsibility to heart, to ensure the continued popularity and longevity of our community and the brands we all support.

When faced with a post where you feel the only option is to dismiss it or "shoot it down", please consider the wider effects of your response. If rules have been broken, report the post to a moderator using the "yellow triangle" report post feature (not by PM, please) and avoid further involvement in the discussion until a moderating decision has been made. Otherwise, please be mindful of the standards referred to above when responding.

Most of all, please strive to be friendly and respectful at all times. There is never just one way to offer (or counter) an opinion. However ill-conceived or inflammatory a post may seem, responding in kind does nothing to help our community and its reputation.

The moderating team will not hesitate to take appropriate action against members who consistently impact the forum atmosphere in a negative way.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and - as always - many thanks for your valued contribution to the forums! :)

BG4 battery grip rear e-dial problem

Does anyone have the pin-out read for the BG4 grip? I'm having a problem with an intermittent e-dial. Sometimes the dial will only work for about 4 -5 stops ie it will go from 8 to 9 to 11 to 13 and then back to 8 again, no matter how slowly or quickly I move the dial. Sometimes I can resolve the problem by dismantling and re-attaching the grip, but sometimes that doesn't work and obviously that's a pain. I have noticed that on of the gold pins in the pin array isn't as extended as the rest of the pins, if I had a pin-out read I could see at a glance if that pin is connected to the rear e-dial. I don't want to send the grip in for repair if I can help it as intermittent problems can be very tricky. If there is anyone out the with the pin-out read I'd be grateful. Also if there are other solutions that anyone can suggest that would be helpful also. I have tried moving the dial quickly back and forth to help clean off contacts but that hasn't worked.

I had to google it, to see what CCD With stand for :)

It was taken with 28mm reversed on extension tube, so probably because of that EXIF show that CCd With.

As regards judges of PEG, it's not normally that someone who probably have slightest interest in macro photography critigue macro photo. IMHO they need to be divided in category (landscape, macro, etc.) in which there are the best.

I know that here on pentax forums there are some great macro photographers, so that is not a problem.

Here is a very nice photo of Mt. Hood, Oregon. This is one of the nicest ski resorts in the country. Fortunately the mountain caught more snow this past December than in recent years. So you can imagine how delighted the operators are at this time. Please enjoy and thanks for looking.

I just want to thank a judge who wrote a short but sweet critique on my photo that I upload for PEG.
Here it's critique; "Can't fault it, just ugly as sin!"

The most constructive comment ever, thank you one more time and because of you I will give a name to photo; "The beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

And here is the pics

If we could get more energy in a smaller battery we could better emulate the SLR body.

Don't think of your zoom lens as a "camera trolley" to bring you close to your subject (unless necessary). Rather think of it as a set of primes and zoom with your feet.
Observe how the relation of subject to background changes with different focal length. Base your choice of focal length upon the desired extent of background compression and separation.
It is not the 35mm prime that gets you involved, it is the informed decision, the effort that makes the shot happen.

Use film which is mainly, a Fujifilm or Kodak "sensor". Then "scan" the negatives with a Pentax or Ricoh digital camera.

.pef vs .dng

DNG files are not a "universal" format in the sense that any DNG can be read by software that reads DNG. The software still needs to understand the RAW data produced by the specific camera/sensor. For instance older Lightroom versions that came out before the K3 and did not get an update for the K3 will not be able to read the DNG native to the K3. The DNG must first be down-converted to an older DNG version acceptable to the Lightroom version by using the DNG converter. The converter version must be new enough to understand the data from that camera.

See: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html for an explanation and list of Pentax cameras/DNG and the maximum Lightroom version they work natively with. This should help clear up some confusion.

TTL - P-TTL flash?
Posted By Matthew Allen
Replies: 8

Classic TTL used light reflected off the surface of the film to determine flash power. All the DSLR manufacturers seem to have decided this was not workable on DSLRs (though the first 3 (?) Pentax models retained this system) so they now use pre-flash systems like P-TTL, iTTL, E-TTL etc. Essentially, the flash fires twice for every exposure. Once for metering (the very short preflash) and once for the exposure itself.

THe K100D does not support classic TTL so you would only be able to use a TTL flash in manual mode or (depending on model) in Auto mode. Auto mode uses the flash's own sensor to decide when to stop nuking your subject.

As a cheap alternative to P-TTL, a flash with an Auto mode might be your best bet. They are generally fairly accurate for indoor work. The drawback is that they won't do much thinking for you so outdoor fill flash and other special applications will be much less straightforward than with a more sophisticated system.

The most important thing to be aware of if you're looking around for cheap flash options is the trigger voltage. You should research any flash that looks interesting before buying because if you get it wrong you could easily fry your camera.

Bonjour penties rider,

Thanks a lot for your post, very helpful. I'd opt for the OEM Pentax grip, but it's just too darned expensive in France (about $300; converted from Euro to $) and I'd rather allocate my photo budget towards saving up for better glass (read "limited").

I shoot RAW+ all the time. It's probably my old computer, but I find I can zip through the jpegs in full screen size very quickly, then pick out the ones that interest me for processing of their RAW counterparts in Lightroom. Also, it's sometimes interesting to see how the Pentax jpeg processed the RAW.

If you're shooting RAW already, the jpegs take very little extra space.

Simplified that for ya

I'm not sure what you mean by "it won't let me have that option by default", but have you tried changing the capture type from JPEG to RAW+? Hit menu and it should be one of the first options on the screen.

You can save it as a default via the File Format option in the Rec. Mode 1 menu.

Go to File Format, you'll see three options, JPEG, RAW and RAW+.

Use the four-way control to navigate down to RAW+, press 'Ok'. Job done.

It's in the manual, page 188 :)
