It looks fantastic. Plenty of waiting, but it looks like they’ve delivered on many of the major asks and then some.

Would I spend it? No. Will someone? Yes.

Unless they are breaking precedent, of course it will be body only.

A camera with these specs isn’t intended for the average consumer. They’re welcome to buy it, but this would presumably be targeting professionals who use the 1DX.

Thank you. These tit-for-tat arguments are not helpful. Take it to DMs if you want to go after each other.

For the purposes of the discussion, we can examine the stated specs, applications, reviews, and experiences of those who have tested or use them. I simply don’t understand the breathless defenses of a particular brand and model abstracted from use cases. If you don’t like it or don’t find it helpful for your photography, no one is forcing you to buy or trying to convert you. If you see a camera that may make your job or hobby easier or more enjoyable, buy it and tell us about it. That’s why we’re here, right? For me, I find the A1 to contain enormously important improvements and can’t wait for them to trickle down the product line to the basic A7 where I am more likely than not to buy to replace my A7iii.

Thanks so much for the reply. Can I ask a few questions about your photo? Was it shot wide open? Did you push the texture or clarity? I’m only asking because the the busy bokeh on the trees in the background. I’m curious about how it’s wide open bokeh looks.

I have the 55/1.8, which is fabulous and not too big, and the 35 is a hair smaller. My indecisiveness is because the 35/2.8 is so damn small it reminds me of shooting with the Pentax 40 pancake, which was one of my favorite limited lenses. It’s just such a great lens size for street photography. I even wore the 35 with my A7iii on my backpack strap with the Peak Design capture clip while on a long hiking trip in 2019 and never really noticed it when I wasn’t shooting. But 1.8 would really clean up some interior shots, and give me a little more creative latitude with the DOF. Hmm.

How are you liking the 35/1.8? I have been using the Zony 2.8 for a few years. On one hand, I could use the extra 1 1/3 stops in many situations, and on the other I really love the slim profile of the 2.8.

I appreciate the Gerald Undone videos as they mix his experience and impressions with helpful and repeatable tests. He had a very positive review of the video capabilities of the A1, even though he stated that for his personal use he would prefer to have both the A7Siii and A7Riv.

I haven’t looked at the operation temp range for their other cameras, but a Sony A7Riv just accompanied the group that summited K2 in the winter, where they recorded temps of -40C. I doubt you’d be doing a whole lot of shooting or putting the body through its paces at that temp or location for fear of not surviving yourself. But it did make it. Kind of reminds me of Rolex’s marketing exercises sending their Explorer to Everest and Deep Sea to challenger deep.

These are incredible specs. Good on Sony for continuing to push boundaries. This Canon/Sony mirrorless battle is good news for people who can benefit from the tech and have the $$ to pay for it. The A9 was already an astonishingly good camera, but to boost the resolution and FPS, while adding 8k and all the other additions will make this an attractive body for those who can use it. It makes more more curious to see what features and updates will find their way downstream into the A7iv.

Right. I intended the counter example to be implied in my post. Some people might find the features useful or helpful, and others may find the features less so and would be better suited with a different package of features.

This is a point that I think is missed in many discussions here. It’s not necessarily the case that the features being discussed make you more money—though they may contribute. It is the case that the features make aspects of the job easier and permit the photographer to focus on other aspects of the work, as Dan mentioned it lets him give more attention to posing the model. Or the features could allow you to do a job in less time, giving more time for other jobs or for oneself.

My own experience in moving to mirrorless is similar. Not only does the AF capability give me a high % hit rate, but it allows me to give more attention to composition.

I am not aware of any arguments suggesting that the features are needed by everyone or every shooting situation. Rather, that the trade off in moving to some mirrorless systems offer advantages that may be useful to some photographers in some scenarios.

Flimsy lens mount may refer to the a6000, which had a plastic mount. Light leaks were in the first gen of the a7 & a7r. Both of these complaints refer to 7 year old models, correct? Partial weather sealing is true for the a7iii, but is more robust in the a7r and a9 series, if I’m not mistaken.

In response to the original question, if you have reasonable expectations that your camera will need service, and it sounds like you do, then buying a camera with a service center closer to you makes sense. There is no single issue—IQ, AF, weather sealing, or any of the hundreds of features on today’s cameras—that will likely be the only thing you care about. There are plenty of excellent systems out there. Pick the one that has the features you need, and can be serviced conveniently.

It may help, but it’s probably not necessary for that. One of my cameras has 4K and no uhs ii slot. It’s probably to help clear the buffer more quickly while high speed shooting.

Do you or have you owned a Sony? They are designed to allow you to customize the function of almost all the external controls—all while continuing to look through the eyepiece.

This was one of the stranger phenomena I’ve witnessed around these parts. It was clear from the first teaser that it had a fixed screen.

It’s not for no reason or lack of demand that so many cameras are designed with them. I use mine every time I take photos. Sometimes it is out of convenience or comfort, and others necessity. There are some shots that are just not possible, or would require far more time, gear, and/or effort without a flippy screen.

I think that’ll be a real challenge considering the price point of the k3iii, and the small collection of modern lenses for it compared to the competition. Fuji will be a stiff competitor in this format, offering a large spread of newer glass, excellent AF, and dozens of other features, not to mention the wide range of bodies and price points. If Pentax intends to undercut the competition, they’d better dust off their marketing chops and start promoting the hell out of this thing. What’s the value proposition? If a photographer is considering a new brand, why the K3iii from Pentax? What does it offer that CaNikon doesn’t in a crop dslr? Why should someone consider a dslr over Fuji or Sony’s mirrorless offerings?

If some of the features perform as well or better than expected, hopefully they can build some momentum by rolling them into other bodies to expand their portfolio somewhat. They have an uphill climb to gain market share or even maintain what they currently have, but I sure do love rooting for an underdog and hope they’ve got some tricks up their sleeve to build on their strengths.
