Thank you. These tit-for-tat arguments are not helpful. Take it to DMs if you want to go after each other.

For the purposes of the discussion, we can examine the stated specs, applications, reviews, and experiences of those who have tested or use them. I simply don’t understand the breathless defenses of a particular brand and model abstracted from use cases. If you don’t like it or don’t find it helpful for your photography, no one is forcing you to buy or trying to convert you. If you see a camera that may make your job or hobby easier or more enjoyable, buy it and tell us about it. That’s why we’re here, right? For me, I find the A1 to contain enormously important improvements and can’t wait for them to trickle down the product line to the basic A7 where I am more likely than not to buy to replace my A7iii.

Thanks so much for the reply. Can I ask a few questions about your photo? Was it shot wide open? Did you push the texture or clarity? I’m only asking because the the busy bokeh on the trees in the background. I’m curious about how it’s wide open bokeh looks.

I have the 55/1.8, which is fabulous and not too big, and the 35 is a hair smaller. My indecisiveness is because the 35/2.8 is so damn small it reminds me of shooting with the Pentax 40 pancake, which was one of my favorite limited lenses. It’s just such a great lens size for street photography. I even wore the 35 with my A7iii on my backpack strap with the Peak Design capture clip while on a long hiking trip in 2019 and never really noticed it when I wasn’t shooting. But 1.8 would really clean up some interior shots, and give me a little more creative latitude with the DOF. Hmm.

I haven’t looked at the operation temp range for their other cameras, but a Sony A7Riv just accompanied the group that summited K2 in the winter, where they recorded temps of -40C. I doubt you’d be doing a whole lot of shooting or putting the body through its paces at that temp or location for fear of not surviving yourself. But it did make it. Kind of reminds me of Rolex’s marketing exercises sending their Explorer to Everest and Deep Sea to challenger deep.

These are incredible specs. Good on Sony for continuing to push boundaries. This Canon/Sony mirrorless battle is good news for people who can benefit from the tech and have the $$ to pay for it. The A9 was already an astonishingly good camera, but to boost the resolution and FPS, while adding 8k and all the other additions will make this an attractive body for those who can use it. It makes more more curious to see what features and updates will find their way downstream into the A7iv.

It may help, but it’s probably not necessary for that. One of my cameras has 4K and no uhs ii slot. It’s probably to help clear the buffer more quickly while high speed shooting.

This was one of the stranger phenomena I’ve witnessed around these parts. It was clear from the first teaser that it had a fixed screen.

It’s not for no reason or lack of demand that so many cameras are designed with them. I use mine every time I take photos. Sometimes it is out of convenience or comfort, and others necessity. There are some shots that are just not possible, or would require far more time, gear, and/or effort without a flippy screen.

Taken with an a6400, not my a7iii. But this time with a new to me Takumar 50/1.4. This is my kiddo, posing for his student council election portrait. And like a numbskull, I shot wide open and missed focus on his eyes by a few inches. Once he’d smiled for this one, I wasn’t getting another chance, so it had to do.

I also have issues with focus peaking accuracy and always need to use zoom to be certain I’m dead on, especially with fast glass. It’s fine for product and landscape photography, but I wouldn’t dare trust it for portrait or motion. The AF is spectacular. Having some more Mpx would be great for cropping.

So, I’ve been enamored of some new lenses. I ran across the old Zeiss range of lenses made for their CONTAX cameras late last year and picked up a 28/2.8 to test out. I loved it. Incredible contrasty images and solid as a rock construction. I’ve picked up a few more since, including a 60/2.8 Makro-Planar. Today I took an afternoon walk through my neighborhood with my daughter and had a chance to see what the lens can do. I’m smitten.

Depends on the type of video work. For videographers who rely on manual focusing, it will be fine. But really no screw drive lens is good for video for one of the same reasons this adapter is unsuitable—noise. Power consumption is the other reason, but rendered moot by the first if using camera mounted mics. I suspect that more modern Pentax lenses will work fine—though power consumption may become a factor in this case.

Congrats on the A7C. I’ve read great things about it, and considering the A7iii spec similarities I have no reason to doubt what I’ve read.

I just got a pair of deliveries last week.

The first was for a Zeiss Mutar II 2x teleconverter for the Contax system to pair with my new (to me) Zeiss 300/4. I’ve never had a telephoto with reach like this before, and mounted on my a6400, I end up with an effective 900mm f 6.3 lens.

Here’s a quick snap of the moon I captured between clouds. It was hazy and the moon was low, so I was shooting through lots of atmosphere. But overall, the image shows the promise of this pair.

Also, I re-added a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50/1.4 after selling my old SMC version last year. This one came with a Spotmatic in great shape, though I doubt I’ll use it for anything more than a decoration next to an old Exakta that I’ve got. One disappointment is that the lens has a larger piece of dust or something on one of the lenses inside. I’ll have to disassemble it or send it out to remove the piece since it is visible in the images. That’s a bummer. but otherwise, the lens is in superb condition.

A photo of my work today—wood working.

1/25s, f8, ISO 100 on the Zeiss 60/2.8 Makro-Planar c/y. Tied for my favorite of the Zeiss CONTAX collection with the 28/2.8.

I made a wooden handle from kingwood for my camera cage yesterday based on the dimensions of the SmallRig handle.

While comfortable, it was a little deep, so i figured, ‘why not make another?’ So this afternoon I made a shallower one from lacewood.

I can’t seem to track down the old ads, but to my recollection camera prices have largely not tracked with inflation. In the past when volume was lower they were more of a higher priced luxury item than some have been today. Perhaps it’s a correction. If the numbers stop working, something has to change or you go out of business. (I’m speaking generally, of course there were low and much higher priced options available)

I picked up the Voigtlander 12/5.6 FE recently. I had the MKi version, but wanted the improved optics and EXIF data of the FE version. I love this lens.

I think the rollei lenses of that era were made by Zeiss. I’ve even heard that their HFT coating was just the T* coating of the time. There are lots of gems in the Contax lineup. There’s a great write up on reduser.com aimed at filmmakers, but still relevant info broken down by lens and version (aeg & mmj). I’ve got the 28/2.8, 50/1.4, 60/2.8 makro (an AMAZING lens), 135/2.8, and 35-70/3.4. Totally worth looking into.
