The download website does not list PDCU as being compatible with Windows 8.1. I have read that some people have had problems. Microsoft has a site to check program compatibility. It indicated it was compatible with PDCU version 4..3. I was previously running version 4..35 and stuck with it. It loaded and works fine on Windows 8.1.

You can also just rename a flash drive (thumb drive). After the install just rename it back to what it was before.
Worked great for me.
Much thanks to the previous contributors. It gave me the idea to try it this way.

I shoot raw (PEF) exculisvely and use DCU 4.33. Is there a way to save your edits with the PEF file so you can later come back to them (open again and have them still apply)?
I have found that as long as I don't close DCU or divert away to a different folder they are retained. But if I go to a different folder or close DCU they are lost.
Thanks,
Mike

Background: I shoot raw and process with Pentax DCU. I use highlight correction and shadow correction as needed in post processing.
There seems to be a discrepency in information provided by DXOMark sensor testing DxOMark - Pentax K-x
The above data indicates higher dynamic range for 100 vs 200. Stepping through the various test results seem to indicate 100 is better than 200 in a lot of ways.
and Digital Photo Review K-X testing Pentax K-x Review: 17. Photographic tests (DR): Digital Photography Review
The above data shows a slight lower "usable" dynamic range for 100 vs 200. It shows a little less highlight range for 100. The shadow range is the same.
What gives?
On p 91 of the manual they state "When the sensitivity is set to ISO 100, bright areas are more likely to occur". The Digital Photo Review data would support this.
I recently shot bright colored folliage in the sun and shoot at ISO 100 thinking it would be better based on DXOMark. I was pleased with the results. I was careful not to blow out a single color channel.
Bottom line when shooting RAW and using DCU which is bettter 100 or 200
Thanks,
Mike

Here is a fix that works for me. Don't Checkmark Phots
The problem with "checking" photos and have DCU crash on startup is not fixed. I downloaded v4.31 and tested it. Do not close the program with having photos checked (red, blue or green checkmarks). The program will not run again. You will get a runtime error message.
I tried the fix below but it turns out I was looking in the wrong place for the CheckInfo.ini file. I was in panic mode. I unitstalled and reinstalled 4.21. It would not run either. I am running windows xp and used the system restore feature. It is under system tools. I restored back to yesterday, installed 4.11 and then upgraded to 4.31. Everything is back working.
The fix below may work but I am not going to test it.
Below is the fix I got somewhere. It worked again on 4.21. I can't believe Pentax has not fixed this. From what I have read support knows about it.

" Don't waste your time - here is a suitable solution.
My last activity was marking about 200 files with the build-in markers. Without further action i had to close DCU4. From then DCU4 ended every launching in crashing.
A deep quest in XP's own (and normally hidden) folders brought the cause: If you mark pictures DCU4 creates a CheckInfo.ini file. If you rename, delete or empty this file launching DCU4 will work normally... until you mark some pictures!
You will find CheckInfo.ini in folder ":\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\application data\Pentax\Digital Camera Utility 4>"
Please remember: I'm using Windows XP Home (german edition). Therefore folder names are different from other languages editions!
Good luck

The issue of DCU not being able to restart after photos are "check marked" is still not fixed. The noise reduction preview looks good.
Also there is an error in the Highligh Adjustment sliders. Low Highlight compensation is actually more and "High" is less. The DR Expansion slider works correctly.

Is there any value in using live view for reducing potential camera vibration due to mirror movement during the use of autobracketing. In a K-X you can't use 2 sec timer (mirror move up) and autobracketing together. I don't fully understand this up and down movement of the mirror that is mentioned here in live view.
Thanks,
Mike

I am not sure if any of the flash contacts are hot at all. Just in case I put a piece of electrical tape on the bottom on the flash shoe plate-1/4-20 adapter.

I have seen people make cable release brackets that utilize the tripod mounting socket on the bottom. This bracket holds a cable release with its plunger directly over the shutter release button. I did not like this design. I wanted to have my camera flush on my tripod and not have to fiddle with the bracket while mounting my camera to the tripod. Someone on the forum mentioned using a ¼”-20 tripod mount screw to flash hot shoe adapter. They are on eBay. I bought this one since it had two locking rings and it was from the US. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200598595922&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT I bought a strip on aluminum that was 1/8” thick by ½” wide and 3ft long at Lowes. I chose aluminum since it is easier to bend and tap. I wanted to tap the cable release into the bracket. The cable release threads are a special tapered thread that you will not be able to match. I tested all sizes metric and standard. M3 x 0.5 fits the best. This is the size tap I used. You get almost a full turn of locking. I have read other people using a 1/8” nut but can not confirm this. I used a vice, piece of pipe and hammer to bend the aluminum strip. Try to avoid bending a full 90 degrees. It will weaken the aluminum. My first attempt broke when I tried to undo a bend for adjustment. Measuring and getting the bends accurate is difficult. It seems the metal does not always bend exactly where you like it to. On my second attempt I first made a template out of coat hanger to use as a guide. The last step was to use a crescent wrench to put a twist at the shutter end to get it to line up. It is not perfectly centered but it works. I am using an air cable release. Some people say an air release is best for isolating any movement. I just happened to have one. I can get a half shutter press for focus and hold it followed by full shutter actuation. It surprisingly takes quite a bit of squeeze for actuation. I am going to buy a regular cable release to provide shutter locking capability in the future. I have read some people put an eraser on the end of the cable release plunger to protect the shutter button. My plunger does not stick out far enough. I cut a circular piece of packing tape to protect the shutter button from getting scratched. I now have cable release capability for exposure bracketing and HDR. If I want to also have mirror lockup for these modes I can also use live view. Good Luck Mike |

I was reading through Silkypix and Pentax documentation and could not find mention of it. I also read through an Adobe Lightroom manual with no mention of it. I would not think it is doing a dark frame substition. It might be getting information from the camera's hot pixel mapping or just looking for them.

Does Pentax DCU 4 automatically try to map out any hot pixels? If so where does DCU get the information to map them out? Would the resulting jpg from DCU be any better than the jpg directly out of the camera? My camera is a K100D. I have been using DCU 4.
Thanks,
Mike

I noticed that I needed to zoom in on the picture in the preview window to be able to see the effect on DCU4. I could then see changes.

I could not find a direct reference to mult-level noise reduction. I obtained the silkypix develeper studio pro version manual. Here is what they have. If I had to guesse I would say it is equivalent to their neat noise reduction. I recently used both noise reductions sliders on a ISO 3200 shot on a K100D and it really made a difference. 4.7.3. Noise Reduction Adjustment Noise means the rough texture that occurs in high sensitive photography. We call it high
frequency noise in the software.
At the high sensitive photography, red, green, or blue spots appear, too. We call them color
noise in this software.
The function to remove such noise is the noise reduction.
In this software, the noise reduction function has independent parameters for every category.
The following sections are summaries of the function of noise reduction. 4.7.3.1. False Color Control The false color control function changes the process level of false color reduction.
The software enables one to reduce both false colors occur in the fine structure area (high
frequency area) and color noise.
When too much color noise at high sensitive photography or false colors in the fine
structure area occurs, increase the reduction level.
However, there are some limitations in this function.
As the reduction level becomes stronger, the color separation level goes down, which makes colors in the color boundary blur. Also,
there is a problem of "color spill," which is the phenomenon that occurs when the vivid color leaks around the picture.
Therefore, too strong reduction level may decrease the picture quality. 4.7.3.2. Neat noise This reduces broader noise associated with high sensitive photographs and generates a
clean image.
This function reduces two different types of noise.
One is banding noise that runs horizontally or vertically. If you notice banding noise,
strengthen neat noise to adjust so that the banding noise will disappear.
The second are runs of color and brightness brought about by noise. If you notice runs of color or brightness, further strengthen neat
noise and false-color controls.
* Neat noise simultaneously performs processing in accordance with strength to remove banding noise and
processing to neaten runs of color and brightness.
Strengthening to remove banding noise varies only through neat noise parameters. Strengthening neatness of
runs of color and brightness changes both neat noise parameters and false color control parameters. (It is
determined by the product of these two parameters.)
Therefore, when adjusting neat noise, adjust false color control at the same time.
If you notice banding noise, first adjust so that it disappears using neat noise, then control runs with false color
controls.
If it is running colors and brightness, not banding noise, that you notice, first strengthen false color controls and
then adjust neat noise.
When adjusting parameters, it does not matter whether you first do neat noise or false color control, but it
becomes easier to drive parameters by using the above orders.
* The "Geometric NR" function provided in other versions (SILKYPIX Developer Studio 2.0, 3.0 and SILKYPIX
Marine Photography 3.0) was integrated into neat noise.Neat noise automatically processes "Geometric NR" if an
image taken by a camera that requires "Geometric NR" processing is being processed.
* Neat noise operates as "Geometric NR" provided in other versions if development parameters are in
interchangeable mode. Please see "4.17.2 Interchangeable Mode" concerning interchangeable mode. 4.7.3.3. Noise Reduction Use the "Noise reduction" slider in the "Noise reduction" sub-control to reduce the high
frequency noise. This function reduces the noise, with using RAW data.
Also, you can remove noise that often occurs when the sharpness is increased. Use the "Noise level" and the "Noise cancel" in the "Noise reduction" sub-control.

Adjust the tone-response curve under the exposure/tone tab. There are numerous write ups on the net about using "curves". Many are for photshop but the technique is the same. You can brighten-darken shadows, midtones or highlights. You can increase or deacrease contast in various regions. You can also utiize the highlight adjustment tab. Click apply and use the DR Expansion slider.
