Adding missing lens info to EXIF

Raising the dead here, but thought I might inform latecomers about the command line utility `exiv2` which can be used to retrieve/list and modify all EXIF and IPTC information. I often use it to do exactly what the poster wants; adding EXIF data to pictures that lack some of it. For instance, I add capture dates to scanned film photos using this script:

QuoteQuote:

#!/bin/bash
# @depends on exiv2

if [ "$1" == "" ]; then
echo "usage: $(basename $0) '2002:07:22 00:00:00' picture.jpg "
else
exiv2 -M "set Exif.Photo.DateTimeOriginal $1" $2
fi

# vim: syntax=sh

On unices such as Linux and mac os you can save it and make it executable. You can easily modify it to set any other exif value to make it possible to alter hundres of files in seconds.

K10D SR issue

I am quite positive a functioning K10D does not have SR turned on when you have tried to turn it off. Just try to put your camera on a table, set the shutter to 0,5s and use the 2-second delay with mirror-lock up, and push the button. That picture should be as sharp as could be (if you actually have anything in focus ...).

I have the K10D, and yes, 1/10s will give you shaky images - SR or no SR. It is not nearly as effective as Pentax would like you to believe, but it helps a bit. I usually find 1/25s to be pushing it.

Samsung Battery Grip

IMHO the quality of this battery grip is rubbish. Having owned one for more than two months I have stopped using it after having had to disassamble/reassable it twice to get buttons working. The weather sealing is fine, but heavy use dents the metal "springs" under the buttons and I need to manually "undent" them to make the grip usable.

Why build a "tank quality" body like this, and then use such crap quality components for the wheels and button? This is the first buy of Pentax/Samsung gear that has been a real let-down. Looks cool though.

True, but most people freak out when they see "dos" (as they call it). It's definitively faster, though :p

You don't need the software or the usb-cable. The whole deal with the extra program just adds an extra layer of complexity. Refer to the previous posts on how to enable and disable DEBUG_MODE on the fly. Newcomers should be directed to the "new" info - a lot more flexible!

I made a guide on how to do it, btw.

Anyone got GX-10 firmware v1.10?

This is so old mut@nt probably won't notice, but his(?) info is incorrect. You can enable the DEBUG MODE on the GX-10 just like the K10D and you DO get AF adjustment in the menu. Nema problema - I have used it lots of times.

It's not risky at all. I have used it several times. But there is a safer and os-agnostic way of doing it using just a text file! You don't even need this program. I got this from the Pentax Hack homepage, but I have written a short sum up on my own blog. Quite easy and also works for the Mac or Linux or even DOS :p

It is possible to enable the debug mode (and thus the AF adjust) using just a text file. I also have the GX-10 and have written a short sum-up on my homepage. Read it if you are still interested :p

Hi, folks. I may come a bit late to the party, but I thought you might be interested in knowing that the folks over at Pentax Hack have deciphered the firmware of the Pentax and Samsung cameras.

It is now possible (without firmware modification) to update lots of parameters on your Pentax or Samsung without using this penta-club.ru program. All you need to do is make a text file MODSET.xx with various commands. I have writting a short sum up of how to enable and disable the debug mode on my Samsung GX-10. You can read more about it here, or just go straight to the source ;)
