Gimp is billed as the Linux answer to Photoshop. I can't verify the claim, since I don't use either of them. Umbutu Linux is free if you have the download speed to get it, or very cheap if you want to buy the latest CD. One of these days I'm going to have to get around to doing it myself.

Here is a link to a fairly recent auction for one - eBay.co.uk: Metrastar Lightmeter by Metrawatt AG Nurenburg (item 250062590093 end time 24-Dec-06 16:02:37 GMT) that went for a bargain. The only current offering is for $74 usd by adorama. ebay just has ib's and batteries. I DO have one and maybe another but am not sure where or in what condition. If you are really interested, I can do a search thru the 'junkbox'. I'm not in too good shape right now, so it is some effort to do a maybe fruitless search.
Google has several other interesting hits that I didn't check out. Have a look.

The best pocket lightmeter I ever have owned is a Metrastar CDS dual range that is very accurate and useable both as reflected and incident. It covers from 0.3 to 680,000 Lux. If you want, I will take a pic of it and post it.

For you digital camera action photographers who have never heard of a RDS, check out this link -
BirdForum - Andy Bright's Digiscoping Forum and BirdForum - Red dot Sight has specific detail on the setup.
The dovetail mount is available in the form of Weaver scope bases which you can find on ebay, or at a sporting goods store. The long single piece mount is the easiest to work with but I have used 2 part (front and rear) bases with concave bottoms to good effect. , and DIY RDS mount with Weaver bases: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review has a photo of my bases. I still have some extras to sell as of the date of this posting.

Does anyone have experience with the ColorVision Spyder2 Express unit? I did a Amazon check and it is available for $65 vs $70 for the Huey. Which is the better package? Any comparison reviews?

Dont' just count on SR to give you the best photo, give it an assist. the following methods will give SR a head start.
1. use a monopod or small tripod as a weight hanging below your camera.
2. attach a cord from the tripod socket to your foot.
3. use a collapsible walking staff with a QD plate for a monopod in the field.
4. * make or buy a "bean bag" / sandbag to 'ground' your camera on outings.
5. * get a window pod for use in the car.
6. * when 1 - 5 are not practical, use a good tripod with a ball head.
7. * put your Harley in hock and buy a gimbal head for that really long lens.
8. if all else fails, tuck your elbows into your sides and firmly hold the
camera with both hands. Don't jab the release, slowly squeeze it.

Where marked * , turn off the SR / OIS / IS to prevent stabilization electronics noise being looped into the SR and blurring your photos. The other 4 still need image stabilization.

I wish I could get an upload to the gallery to work! Every time I try it kicks out on me. I just got desperate and posted it on the DSLR discussion page as a link to a copy on my smugmug site. That worked. Can this Photo Day gallery be submitted to from smugmug? :(

I tried posting this photo to the POD gallery and it kept kicking out on me. I even tried a different browser! so I'll try this route.:( Looks like it worked.
The photo was taken last weekend on a leaf peeping ride in the Black River watershed, SW Adirondacks, NY, USA. It was taken with a Pentax (of course) *ist DL using the 18-55mm kit lens and Hi jpg mode. Some PP im Elements 3 to kick up the contrast. The sun was playing cat and mouse.

Looking for a Monopod recomendation

Whatever monopod you get, try using it collapsed for shooting action. You will find that the lower Center of Gravity will stabilize your camera for a one or 2 stop improvement. Your photos will be as sharp handheld at 1/50 as they would have been at 1/200 for instance. It sure won't make the lens feel any lighter though....

I guess I must be getting blind, but I CAN'T find the today post section! I even tried searchinng the FAQ for "today" to no avail.... Please, stear me to it.

Thanks Mo - the modes are somewhat confusing, I wish Pentax or an informed forum member would cteate a chart of what does what. The manual lacks one.

On another subject, what would you suggest as a K mount compatible tele converter for decent image quality at a reasonable price?

Hi Eddie - I've been researching the mode dial actions on DPR forum and it sounds like P mode plays russian roulette picking which one of the P&S modes to use, and that the P&S modes are pretty wimpy in their actions. If you are shooting RAW, you should be using M, or the other pro modes on the other half of the dial. Just use the P&S settings if someone else is taking your picture....

How can I protect the back LCD?

Arpe - If you REALLY want heavy duty protection, get a Delkin Pop-Up Shade. About $20 and adds 2 layers of protection and makes it easier to see the review / menu screen outdoors. The hood is easily removeable if it's in your way, leaving the base with it's plastic window. I've been using one on a pocket P&S and it's great.

Sensor dust prevention?

Have you been keeping your camera carying case cleaner recently, and the outside of the camera? Has the relative humidity been higher? All these factors will reduce the likelyhood that dust will be drawn in while the camera is open. (by static attraction) I'm thinking of making a plastic changing bag with HEPA intake filtering on one side and a flapper check valve on the other (exhaust) side. I'm going to look at the vacumn garment bags as a possible start, and a replacement vacumn cleaner HEPA filter at the intake. Might be a worthwhile DIY project. I think furniture and auto paint shops have some great "tack(ey) rags" to get up the last dust. Go speak to an expert! :)

2) 4.5f/80-200 (around the edge of the lens it reads "JC Penny Multi-Coated
Optics, No.8243750.") Also, the word "Marco" is printed on
the base in a neon green color.[/QUOTE]

I "think" the 80-200 zoom will work the same was as the 50. I wouldn't expect the same high image quality from a JCPenny rebadged Chinon or whatever. They probably bought from the cheapest source just like Sears or Wards did back in those days. Make sure the diaphram blades move freely and the zoom and focus rings function properly. It is worth more as a keepsake than what you could get in trade or on ebay. Use and enjoy it.

Thanks, and welcome your self. I used Pentax film cameras and Panasonic digitals for years, but the ist DL is my first DSLR. It should be great after I get up on the learning curve... I need to get the mode dial under my belt! It seems to be the key to getting the exposure right. If the K100D will be your primary camera, the SR will be a God Send. :)
