I am more than happy to change my habits, and I will.
but ya gotta admit - three dashes is a far cry from a message saying "No SD Card". keerist.
Make the computer come to the user, not the other way around - its called being "user friendly". I am amazed at how much people put up with bad software design, its like they are proud they understand the complexities, somehow special.

Not on mine at all - with the SD Card out, all it shows is just three dashes, where the picture count would normally be. The only time I get a message is when I go to review a picture.
Hmmm, I wonder what firmware I have...

Got a k7. Made a big mistake. Pulled out the camera, started shooting. It was outdoor hand held stuff - I didn't even do one review in the field. Anyways, finished up my shots a couple of hours later.
Back at home, went to unload - no SD Card in slot.
OK, so of course this is a stupid mistake on my part, but the camera didn't even say anything, other than the picture counter was dashes. I would expect it to flash a big message saying "dont even try to take pictures ya idiot, there's no SD card in the slot!". Is there a setting for this?

Hey all, locally there is a used k5 body for sale. About $300 less than retail. Its a private sale.
The PO wants to selll it so he can buy the limited edition version.
What do I look for when buying used from a private seller?
thanks

Thanks for the info.
Hmmm, I did not notice the camera (K7) asking me to enter the focal length - I am running full manual though. I just gave it a try in green mode and program mode, and the camera did not say a thing. EXIF did not report anything.

Any users of the Pentax 1.7x adapter and DA* lenses?
I just got my adapter. I was under the impression (which can be wrong), that if the lens was already autofocus (e.g. my DA* lenses), that the autofocus would still work. I was thinking the adapter would just "pass through" the autofocus into the DA* lens, rather than trying to do focus itself, as if the lens was manual.
Am I doing something wrong here?

Got the DA* 300. Weather sealing pushed me over the edge. I am often outdoors in crap weather. Weatherproof camera and lens has made it a much easier job.

I stand corrected - on another thread this guy has developed tethered shooting that works with the K7.

Well it works pretty good for me and my K7 - hangs about even 20th shot, but that might just be my USB router (it has caused other problems).
WerTicus - check your USB Connection on the camera menu. Is it MSC or PTP? I have mine as MSC.

K-7 does not have tethered computer remote control like my K20D did. Not a big deal if you don't shoot studio or with a setup.

The tripod mount is a big deal - but it turns out a chinese one from DealExtreme meant for Canon YN mount will fit and costs $13. It is reported to work quite well.

I found a used DA*300/f4 for $1150 and a FA*300/f4.5 for $750 - other than a little speed, what would I be losing buying the FA?

Timely post. Normally I am not a nature photographer, but I took my K7 out on a hike this past weekend. I was rewarded with a bald eagle sitting on a tree. I took a number of pictures, slowly getting closer and closer. AF-S. Focus was good.
As soon as he started to fly off though, I followed and tried to fire as much as possible, but the K7 would not fire (I guess becuase it did not have focus). I pressed the shutter maybe 1- times, but got to out of focus shots. AF-S again.
So from what I read here, I should use AF-S for the standing still, and then AF-C for when he takes off or is in flight?

Canon 7D has tethering. The Pentax k7 does not. If you do studio work or outside setups with a laptop, tethering is critical. The HDMI port on the k7 is not an adequate solution. If I had to do it again, I would spend the extra dollars and purchase the 7D.

Well, found one answer. I can turn of the info on live view, via Menu -> Camera -> 3 -> LiveView -> Info -> Info Overlay.

Couple of questions about K7 and live view:
(1) Is there a way I can have live view *not* adjust light levels? To have it appear more as how the real picture will appear? Right now, it is adjusting based upon how much light is in the scene.
(2) Anyway to turn off all the info on the screen in Live View? It is getting in the way of previewing the picture.
thanks

I have been using a combination of USB and HDMI:
(1) Connect HDMI cable to camera and monitor
(2) Connect USB to camera
(3) Power up camera and monitor
(4) Use live view on monitor
(5) Set up shot
(6) Shoot
(7) Plug in USB
(8) Copy over file, process, review
(9) Unplug USB
(10)Reboot camera
(11)Go back to step 4
Some suggest using a "Eye-Fi Pro" wireless SD card (and yet another $150), unfortunately this is not yet available where I live.
To use HDMI you require an HDMI/DVI capable monitor and cable. $200-400 should cover it for you.
*arghhh*
