Area AF: How does the camera choose?

If you half press the shutter button, the camera will choose another focus point. You can use this mode to cycle thru potential subjects, however, if your camera doesn't have a confirmation light, you're either guessing or relying on your superior visual acuity to judge whether you've hit your target.

This is the kind of flagrant noisemaking that doesn't help anyone.
One bad experience does not indicate a systematic failure of the brand.
What of the number of users, including myself, who have invested heavily in Pentax gear and have not had a single problem with the gear or the customer service of local Pentax representatives?

I bought my K-5 from a retailer in Japan (I'm living in the US). I asked B&H in this thread and he said I should be ok.

Pulling the trigger -- purchase the k-5 now or wait?

I rarely post on this forum, but I do visit it frequently and have been following all the threads concerning the K-5. Thanks to the information gleaned from this and some other forums, I decided the good far outweighed the bad, for my purposes. I purchased the camera from an authorized dealer when their new stock came in, and am happy to report that the sensor is clean, the body is brand-new perfect, and I have no complaints regarding its low light focusing. I also have a K20d and a K-x, which I like very much and have used with no problems. However, I can say unequivocally that the K-5 is the best of the three. I suppose my opinion doesn't count much to those who are unhappy with the camera, but I just wanted to add some positive feedback, so that anyone who's interested in the camera can see there are satisfied owners as well. And before I can be called a "fanboy", I will fade back into the silent majority and enjoy my lovely new camera.

use the FN button and select the flash mode W.

In the custom setting menu there should be an option "flash in wireless mode" if set to "off" it fires the built in flash to trigger the wireless strobe without affecting the exposure.

I feel both my 50s are underused. The Petri is a recent addition to my stable and so far I've been rather frustrated by it. It's very very tricky to focus. I may be getting myself into a lot of trouble with that one, while the M50 is a pleasure to use. I am very curious though, to see just how good the Petri is. I know already that it flares up with so much as candle light lol and it's soft wide open, but the bokeh seems promising and very suitable for portraiture. I'll keep thinking about it a bit more. Besides, everyone has seen the M50, and the Petri isn't quite as common.

Here's a sample from the Petri 55/1.8 when I actually catch it in focus.

News "Top Likes" - Reputation system enhancements
Posted By Adam

In the past, our reputation system could only reward individuals for posting quality threads or replies on the forum. After reading user suggestions, we've decided to enhance the system so that it's of more benefit to the entire community.

Thus, we're proud to announce our new "Liked Posts" dropdown, which will be found in the upper-right corner of every thread on the forum. This dropdown will display the 5 (subject to change) posts that have gotten the most reputation clicks (or "Likes") within the thread. Thus, it will now be much easier to find the "meaty" posts within a thread (assuming people click the like buttons!).

Attachment 79132

To like a post, click on the link/thumbs-up icon in the lower-right corner of the post (or upper-right if the post is an announcement/article, such as this one). There's an option in your user cp that allows you to switch between the text link and the icon.

Attachment 79133 Attachment 79134

When liking a post, you can also type a thank-you comment which will be visible to the owner of the post. Each like will add to the user's reputation score, which will be used to award various added account features (suggestions welcome).

Finally, the number of likes any post has gotten, if greater than zero, will be shown in the upper-left corner of each post, beside the date.

Attachment 79135

We hope you enjoy this new feature!

Tamron 17-50mm a worthy "downgrade" (from Pentax 16-50mm)???

I've been shooting with the Tamron 17-50 2 & a half years. I chose it over the Da 16-50--price not a factor. I hike in all 4 seasons of the year in New England and take the Tammy above tree-line in the Presidential range of the White Mountians in winter months. The lens works splendidly, even in temps which are often below zero degrees. I keep the lens and camera tucked under my outer shell, until I select a shot. The build quality leaves nothing to be desired. Here are some other reasons I chose the Tamron:

It is much lighter
It has less distortion @ wide end
It close focuses slightly closer
It has better CA control
It is better wide open

Its Achilles' Heel, if it has one, is it is too sharp.
