Thanks Chuck. Sounds like it may work. If I find it's too small, any problem returning it?

Lowpro bag rain cover?

Hi,
Taking a trip (bicycle tour) to the Netherlands in May and expect a 50/50 chance of rain. I use a Lowpro fastpack 200 and would like to find a waterproof cover for it. Does B&H have something like that?

DA* 50-135 or 60-250?

I'm looking to get a longer lens and am torn between these two. I like land scape and people street/candid photography. I've never done wild life so I'm not sure I would need the length of that 60-250. Which would I get more use out of?

I'm currently using (more like learning) a K-7 with DA*16-50mm.

Economics of prints

As a newbie to the digital world, my experience with actually printing my photos is limited to our old handy HP photojet. With my new K7 in hand and a rudimentery knowledge of GIMP 2.6 I've actually have a few photo's I'd like to print, frame and enter in local county fairs. So the question is: Is it more economical in the long run to own a decent printer or utilize the professional printing services? I'm talking maybe a dozen prints a month at most so I'm concerned over ink drying out over time...and those little suckers can cost a bundle!

K-7 dim viewfinder data

Thanks everyone. I'll first try the "no glasses" approach. but to be honest the idea of taking them off then back on (and possibly loosing them) doesn't seem efficient. The eye cup may work but aren't they designed for those lucky few with near 20/20?
To Creampuff; cool your jets! We aren't compairing film to DLSR. Just asking if there is a way to brighten up that data. There are probably more people with "less than perfect eyes" than those with. We aren't implying its a problem with the specific camera, maybe just this design. Don't you think the design engineers would consider us bespectacled users and make allowances?

I wear glasses and am having a hard time seeing the camera setting display inside the viewfinder, outdoors in sunny conditions. Is there a way to brighten this display? I'm old school and can't get used to looking at the top LCD display for the needed info.

How to check a new DSLR

I'm new to DSLRs. I just received the K-7 and smc DA* 16-50 from B&H. I'm very disappointed in the packing job they did. the large box held the two smaller Pentax boxes and they banged around inside. They only used those air pillows on top of the camera and lens and nothing under them or on the sides. So I would like to find out if someone has a script of the basic functions I should check out. It is going to take me some time to get through that 300 page manual.

So far, it turns on, focuses, flash works, takes nice pictures (okay, stellar pictures compaired to my Kodak P&S). What else could be subject to damage due to the UPS shake, rattle and roll test?

Thanks everyone. Good discussions and points made by all. B&H will be shipping the K7, 16-50 DA* f2.8 (listed as in stock now), 8MB card by the end of this month. I guess this thread should be closed. Anyone know how to end a thread?? Or does it just die in cyberspace when everyone is bored with it?

I confess: I'm a born worry wart and sceptic. It dosn't help much that I work in a customer service division of a test and measurement company. I see, hear and feel the grief of equipment owners. I do thank you all for making me look at it from a differnt point of view.

As for my type of photography, I'd call it general. Landscapes to candids. I've a keen interest in doing some macro work and learning to do more with artifical lighthing.

I think if I googled "Canon 50D problems" their forum would probably scare the hell out of me also. Internetpiolt pointed out that If i look for problems, I'll find it in spades. Time for me to look at the glass half full and go for the K7....now if only pentax would hurry up with the 16-50mm...

After 15+ years of being out of photograph I decided to get back into it. After months of reading about DSLRs I narrowed it down to either the K7 or the Canon 50D. I don't own anything of either company so when I purchase, I'll be committing to a system. I nearly convinced myself into the K7 as it feels nice, is weather tight and has some neat features. However the lack of DA* lense availability has made me wait and wait and wait. So some WEB searching brought me to this forum.

You've all scared the snot out of me with the posts of terrible QA issues with the lenses and poor after sales support. This may be my first and last post since I'm now leaning towards Canon. Someone, give me a compelling reason to give Pentax a shot?
