Flange Distances of Medium Format camera systems

To adapt a lens on camera system and to focus to infinity the register/ flange distance (FD) of the lens has to be greater than the FD of the camera system.

gavincato as we stated this Fotodiox "pro" adaptor isn´t very pro ;)
Fotodiox Pro Adapter Hasselblad V to Pentax 645 (Pro HB-PT645) -A short review- - PentaxForums.com

As far as I Know there are 4 adaptors on the market:
_ Kipon, a chinese made adapter
_ Rayq[al] (=Fotodiox) chinese providence
_ Rugift an east european made adapter (Russian or Ukrainian origin)
_ Zörkendörfer ( “Zörk”), a german manufacturer.

Unfortunatelly Novoflex won´t make a Habla -> Pentax 645 adaptor. I asked them. Novoflex has former produced pars for Hasselblad - this would be the best build quality.

If you will test the Kipon - please add a short review.
I looked on the pictures in the Kipon add - but the lock (which is the weakest part) wasn´t good to see

you are right ;) .
In my opinion the most Photoscala comments are more aggressive /hateful than in moderated forums. If you want to send a comment, there is a captcha but no moderation and you are anonymous*. A lot of posters become in this situation unscrupulous – and PS is a place of flaming brand „wars“ of [nikon, Canon, Sony ...] fan -boys.

Despite of the reader comments the articles are better than in the most german online photo mags ( despite the swiss fotointern which has a special swiss view). And it is as far as I know the online photo mag in Germany which has the most readers.

Good remark
When Nikon released the D800 they published a brochure with lens "recommendations" suitable for the D800/D800E
There were not about a dozen from Nikon which are "suitable".
If you add the Zeiss Oti ZF.2, Apo-Sonnar ZF.2 and the 2or 3 Milvi ZF.2 which fit to the D800/D800E/D810, and some Sigma Arts - its not alot more . than Pentax offers.

Pentax Medium Format Resources: Pentax 645: Third party lenses via adapter

Adapting “third party lenses” is in medium format (MF) photography more usual than in 135 photography. The main reason is IMHO the fact that MF photography with interchangeable lenses never was mainstream photography and always a small market. Unlike for 135 systems for most MF systems on economical reasons there are only one manufacturer (mostly the camera manufacturer) who offers lenses for “his” MF system. With a limited number of customers an economical production of special lenses is often not possible. So these lenses are expensive or not will not be built.
From this economical fact comes the necessary reason to adapt “rare” and special third party lenses (or other resources) from a third party manufacturer to the own system.
So MF systems are more open than 135 camera systems. Some MF camera manufactures (e.g. Hasselblad, Pentacon …) offers blind mount for adaptions, some manufactures (e.g. Pentax, Mamiya, Contax or future Leica) have/had adapters for thirds party lenses in their MF portfolio.
Another reason is that MF photography is a “slower” photography than 135 photography. Most adapted MF lens have some restrictions or limitations (no automatic aperture, no electronically communication with the camera). In the “faster”135 photography this may be a major disadvantage, in more contemplative MF photography stop down metering would not be too uncomfortable.

Technical

Pentax 645 cameras have a flange distance (FD) of 70.87 mm. That means from lens mount to film/sensor is a distance of 70.87mm.
Mechanical you can adapt every lens which has
_ a FD higher than 70.87mm
_ a mount diameter which would fit.
_ a image circle which illuminates at least 60mmx45mm

Another restriction is the aperture regulation which has be able mechanical.

Normally adapted lenses have
_ no AF
_ are working with stop down metering (no automatic aperture)
_ and have no electronically communication between lens and camera.

Possible by FD but IMHO not realized are adapters from Rollei 66, Bronica.
An adapter for Mamiya RZ and RB lenses to Pentax 645 camera adapter is announced by Steib (Munich ) and Wiese (Hamburg).

Not possible are those from Rollei SLX (FD 74.00mm) because the lack of aperture regulation.

Medium format cameras like Contax 645 (FD 64.00mm), Hasselblad H, Leica S2 or Mamiya 645 (FD 63.30mm) have a flange distance which is smaller than those of the Pentax645, adapted lenses from these systems would not be able to focus on infinite.

Pentax 67 lenses to Pentax 645

Pentax 67 lenses have a FD of 84.95mm
It is not “third party” so Pentax offers directly an adapter. The aperture of the 67 is automatically stopped down during the exposure. "The aperture value is properly transmitted from the lenses to the camera by a mechanical simulator slider (which many people miss inside the small Pentax DSLRs), but there is no transmittion of a aperture value from the camera to the lenses --> no A-mode. Measurements in M-Mode and Av-Mode are working " (source Klaus123 in this thread)

An overview of the adaptable lenses is given in the review part of this forum.

Hasselblad V-system lenses to Pentax 645

Hasselblad V lenses have a FD 74.90mm.

As I see there are four brands of adapters for Hasselblad V lenses to Pentax 645 cameras on market.
The "brands” are:
_ Kipon, a chinese made adapter
_ Rayq[al] (=Fotodiox?) japanese providence
_ Rugift an east european made adapter (Russian or Ukrainian origin)
_ Zörkendörfer ( “Zörk”), a german manufacturer.

Major lens supplier for this system: Carl Zeiss Oberkochen and Schneider-Kreuznach. There are also lenses from Fuji.
You can use lenses for the so called “Hasselblad V-system” (camera series 200, 500, 2000) with central (C, CF, CFi) or focal shutter (F, FE).

Pentacon Six [P6] bayonet lenses to Pentax 645

Pentacon Six [P6] lenses have a FD of 74.10mm.
Pentacon* Six [P6] was a Medium Format system which was built originally at Kamera Werke Dresden Germany (KW, later VEB Pentacon) first in the mid fifties (Praktisix). The breech mount was also used by Exakta 66 (West Germany) and the Ukrainian camera Kiev60 (Arsenal in Kiev, Ukraine). From the mid nineties the ukrainian Hasselblad clone Kiev80** was also produced with the P6 mount. Since the nineties the P6 mount has developed to the standard east European MF mount.
Arsenal stopped camera and lens production officially in 2009, but in time before in Kiev a lot of small spin offs manufactures and mechanical workshops (Arax, Hartblei....) offered accessories for the P6 system.

Out of my experience there are no “branded” adapters for P6 lenses to Pentax 645 on market. Most of the adapters on market are no name from small eastern european or chinese mechanic workshops.
I have seen adapters made from aluminium and of brass. IMHO the brass one is more preferable.

Major lens supplier for the P6 medium format system was VEB Carl Zeiss Jena (Germany), Schneider –Kreuznach (Germany), Meyer, Görlitz (later VEB Pentacon) (Germany), Arsenal (Ukraine) and spin offs (Arax, Hartblei…)

* historical remark: the names Pentax and Pentacon have the same historic roots. In the late 40ies Zeiss Ikon Dresden (East Germany) invented the 135 SLR Contax with Pentaprism and M42 thread mount. Because of differences in naming between Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen) (West Germany) and VEB Carl Zeiss Jena (East Germany), in Dresden (East Germany) was decided to brand the SLR in the late 50ies as Pentacon which derives from Pentaprism contax.
Some licences were sold to Asahi Japan which named their SLR as Pentaprism Contax.

Later both SLR brands named the manufacturer.

** There is the possibility to adapt Kiev80 lenses (with “original” Hasselblad F1000 threat mount) to P6.

Exotics to Pentax 645

_Leica Visoflex lenses

Some Leica lenses for the Visoflex system have their origin in Great Format lenses, so the image circle and FD allow adapting these lenses. Leica Visoflex M39 screw mount lens, i.e., 65mm f3.5, telyt 135mm F4, Telyt 200mm F4, 280mm F4.5 and others.
There are no commercial made "direct" adapters known, but there "indirect" ways:
a) Leica Visoflex M39 Lens to Hasselblad Mount Adapter (e.g. rugift) + Hasselblad to P645 adapter

b) Leica Visoflex M39 Lens to Pentax 67 Adapter + Pentax 67 to Pentax 645 adapter

_ Novoflex Schnellschuss System

The “Novoflex Schnellschuss System” was rapid focus system for telelenses from the pre AF era. It was a combination of a rapid focus head with changeable mounts and a tele lens optical system. (there were 400mm and 500 tele lenses from Novoflex and Leica.
Some Hasselblad literature indicates that it can used also on 60x60mm MF cameras. The mount name for Pentax 645 is “TAXPRO”

Mamiya RZ and RB lenses to Pentax 645 camera adapter

Steib (München) and Wiese (Hamburg) are offering a Mamiya RZ and RB lens to Pentax 645 (and Cx 645, Mamiya 645) adapter. It made partial from Mamiya parts, price is about 1100€

Fotodiox Pro Adapter Hasselblad V to Pentax 645 (Pro HB-PT645) -A short review-

Fotodiox Pro Adapter Hasselblad V to Pentax 645 (Pro HB-PT645) -A short review-

Yesterday my Fotodiox adapter Hasselblad V lenses to Pentax 645 mount arrived *.
It was delivered in a neutral paper box printed with “Fotodiox lens mount adapter , Fotodiox Inc. , 3805 Hawthorn Ct Waukegan , Il 60087”. (no EAN ,no made in , no part No). The adapter was wrapped into a cellophane bag, a small velvet pouch was added. The adapter itself is also printed with a mark “ Fotodiox Pro HB-PT645” on his black painted surface. It weights 26.8 grams.
The lens release lever is simply made from punched and chromed sheet metal, screwed by one point on the adapter. The lens release lever overtops the adapter for 6mm- a solution which might be solved better (eg. like Novoflex adapters with a button which is not overtopping so high) .
The adapter is made mostly by aluminum which is black painted, some parts (some screws, lever) are made from chromed iron sheet material. The build quality is OK, on my sample I couldn´t find any scratching grooves etc., but I won´t name it well done or excellent. Measuring with an micrometer I could also not find differences in material thickness, but a micrometer is a coarse instrument ;) .
The flange distance with with all my adapted Hasselblad lenses seems to be right. With focus confirmation and by eye view all my lenses could be focused to infinity** .
The adapter works on my 50mm CF IF, 100 CF, 180 CF, 350 FE . But a Vivitar [Kenko] MC converter 2x for Hasselblad [which is usable with "E" lenses] was not adaptable with this adapter. So I asked a friend to lend me a Komura Teleplus MC6 2x converter for Hasselblad [which you never should use with "E" lenses !] - this one works. Unfortunately I don´t know anybody who owns an original Zeiss Mutar 2x or Hasselblad XE 2x for renting it for a short test - it would be interesting if these converter would fit. For the future I have to live not using my converter - also without a 700mm/8.0 :D .
Adapted with the Fotodiox my Carl Zeiss CF and FE lenses for Hasselblad V are fitting tight but not tough, without any play on my Pentax 645N. With the adapter on the camera, Hasselblad lenses on a Pentax 645 camera can be used like on a Hasselblad F-camera. I have not to mention that there is no electronic connection between lens and camera, you have metering stop down, and in the display and in the (printed/electronic) metadata you´ll miss the f-stop.
Another negative point is the black surface painting, after "testing" the adapter for a few hours yesterday evening - the black surface paint was scratched off on some points. IMHO for the flanges chromed brass is the better material than black painted aluminum. In an analogue system it may be acceptable- but with a digital D or Z the paint flitters are a permanent "danger" for the sensor. For about 80€ and a "pro" named version these parts should be produced in brass or at least in eloxated aluminum - painting is IMHO a no go in this area. Its a chinese avarice which overtops scottish or swabian thriftiness. Even my old GDR made mounts for my former P6 system were made from eloxated material.

my Conclusion:
For 80 € I got an adapter which works and is spreading my lens resources on the Pentax 645N . But I cannot agree with offering this adapter as a "pro" version . For a pro version the lens release lever and the flanges to lens and camera should be modified. If Novoflex would offer these type of adapter (Hasselblad V to Pentax645) I would prefer the Novoflex build quality. If I may use in future a digital system, I would look for a bavarian alternative - the saving of time for cleaning a sensor will certainly overtop the addition expenses ;)

* Background for my order is the “last order” offer for the 645D cameras in Germany. My Ricoh/Pentax dealer (which is also my Hasselblad dealer :D ) offered me a price for the package 645D+55mm which may be worth to be thought. And if I don´t take the offer, the spectrum of lenses for my 645N is spread up from 35 (Pentax A 645 35 mm /3.5) to 350mm (Tessar FE 350mm/4.0)

** using my analogue camera (Ptx645N) I can give the last confirmation after developing the test film. If I´ll notice some remarkable - I´ll add it here.

The shutter is inside the Pentax 645N/D/Z. Set shutter speed at the camera in M mode or use "A" mode. Use the Carl Zeiss lenses for Hasselblad in "F" mode (green or orange button).
(it is the same principe as using a Habla 200x or 20x).
Aperture is set at the lens with pushing the stop down button. ("stop down metering").

No Praktica MTL has a M42 threadmount, Pentaconsix a P6 bayonet-mount. There are automatic adapters from P& lenses to M42 cameras, but not in the other way. (M42 lens on P6 camera) . Also flange distance and lens circle would not fit.
