Yes i did use a standard cutter.
For "pen" i meant a soft fine point permanent marker like the one that can write on cd/dvd.
When you cut the screen don't try to be 100% accurate, it's better to cut it a little less than required and then sand/grind down to the correct size.
Sorry, i forgot to mention to tape the screens before doing anything of the above (even when putting the two screens on top of each other, as they're very prone to smudge/scratches).
About the screen check in the discussion i linked before for wich Nikon screen i used, because there are several of it for different body and probably they aren't of the same thickness...i can only guarantee that will fit without the shim for the specific model i used (i'm not talking about the "type" but about the body model it was made for).
If you use a different one you may need to make shim for it (or buy it from Pentax), or it could be too thick and impossible to adapt.
p.s. "2. Cut the Nikon K3 using whatever means necessary" i would exclude the use of a chainsaw tough :lol:

Nothing is "wrong" with the KX stock screen.
With the Nikon screen adapted to pentax i gain the split and the microprism collar, they're very good aid for manual focus.
In addition to the above the stock screen can't visualize difference in DOF when you have a lens faster than f2.8 while the adapted nikon screen was able to show those differences even at f1.4.
As i wrote before, the DOF preview on the nikon screen is the same as the one i get when using liveview.

If you've done it before for the K100D why not try for the K7 too?
You could also try the screen you've made for the K100D and see if it fits on the K7.
I've done'it for my KX using one Nikon screen.
As you've noticed they're much thicker than the original one, but focus is spot on (at least on mine body/focusingscreen combo) without using the original shim. (i mean the thickness of the nikon screen was equal to the stock screen + shim).
To cut it i putted the stock screen on top of the nikon and marked the border with a pen.
Then i've used a cutter with a ruler on the guided lines created before (i repeated the process several time so that i could go as deep as possible with the cutter).
The last step was using scissors for the final cut, and sandpaper to refine the edges.
I suppose that something like the Dremel would be better than the tools i've used ;)

The body calculate the shutter speed difference between the smallest aperture available and the one you've selected on the body.
EX. the smallest F-stop is f1.4 and you choose f4, the body will read the light coming from the lens wide open and adjust the shutter by lowering its speed by 4stop (hope i'm not wrong here with the calculation :D)

You're right in M mode you can meter stopped down, and then change the value on body.
As far as i know there's no easier way than shorting the pin on the body itself.
In any other mode you could lock the AE and change the value on body and whould still work...but isn't so fast and user friendly to do it ;).
I wrote this in another thread, i think the only thing that could be done (other than using a not crippled mount...) would be to have a menu like the one that ask for the FL when you mount a K/M lens so you can input the aperture range, then you chose the aperture on the lens and on body and when you shoot the camera completley stop down the lens.
This could be easily done with a firmware upgrade for all the body.
Sorry for my bad english, i mean without damaging the lens mount with "arming" :)

Since i'm home with the flu and i've nothing better to do, i made a little test using my KX and an M50 f1.4 lens.
The test has a total of 24 picture, the first 8 are with the M50 half mounted (the lens lever isn't mechanically affected by the body this way) and shotted moving the lens aperture ring to f1.4-2-2.4-2.8-3.5-4-4.5-5.6.
The second 8 pics are done after shorting the "*" pin and moving the lens aperture as above.
I've set the lens locking notch so the pin needed to say to the body the lens has an aperture range between f1.4 and f22 doesn't make contact.
I don't know why (dunno cause i remember i did use the M50 in thuis way before and metering was spot on) but i had to push the exposure copensation by + 2 and 1/2 stop to have a correct exposure wide open (maybe i shorted other pin also because using LV the shutter was twice as fast 0_0...).
The last 8 was done has the A set but using flash (to show P-TTL usage).
I didn't match the f-stop between the body and the lens, all i've done is closing the aperture on the lens itself while in AV mode and thake the picture.

If you're interested only in AV mode you may remove the aperture lever (if reversible) or don't completly mount the lens and the camera will give you an accurate metering with full manual aperture control. (note that if you stop down to f16 the viewfinder will darker)
If you need matrix metering and P-TTL short the pin on the body also. (blende8 is the * on the picture)
The drawback is that your picture exif will show always f1.2 and you can't select the f-stop on the body.
Keeping the situation above in mind, if you use a K50 1.2 and put f4 on body and stop down the lens at f4 your picture will'be severly over exposed because the body will read the light that is passing trough the lens at f4 thinking it is fully open.
All of the above can be done easily without arming or modifing the mount on the lens.

if the price is the same i'd go without thinking too much with the Pentax (assuming the lens is in a good and working condition).
You could resell it if you don't like or need the extra reach and since was a "bargain" price you should also manage to buy the tamron and end with some extra money in your pocket ;)

Clark, you should see the same difference between 135mm and 200mm with yours lens since the tammy is IF and subject distance was the same. (i could post two shoot at MFD to see if the difference become less)
To be honest the exif report 130mm but zoom position was alligned with the 135 marking on the barrel of the lens, and by compairing with the image i got from my FA 135 f2.8 (another IF lens) framing looks the same to me.

Here are two images taken with the Tamron 70-200 that show the difference in reach between 135mm and 200mm.
Distance from camera was about 2.5m / 8.2ft.
The Buddha head is as big as a child's head

Today i fall for the 70-200.
Test picture at the local shop:
f2.8 200mm 1/8 sec handeld
And my dinner:
f2.8 200mm 1/90 sec Flash
It's huge! not to mention a little heavy.
Love the curved aperture blade, a little less the MF/AF push pull mechanism.

FA 135 2.8 (@f4)
(@f2.8 - for cat lover, sorry for the poor framing :D)
Do you guys know what bird is in the second picture? (sorry i'm not an expert :o)
I don't know if i must be sad or happy...i just missed an auction when i was at work for a Porst 135 f1.8.
Judging the quality of the f2.8 version it colud be one very interesting lens...there're a couple of them but, as excepted,
prices are higer (for the same price i colud get a zeiss sonnar MC jena 180 f2.8) than the winnning bid for the auction i mentioned before.

A question for you f1.2 owners, how these lens perform with an 1.4/1.5 TC?
I was wondering how would look like, for example, a porst 55 f1.2 + a 1.5 TC...would it be too much thinking it could be nice 82.5 f1.8?

A couple of snaps from the local zoo-aquarium with the fifty wide open:
Here's a set (almost all picture from the zoo-aquarium are with the M 50, the others at the zoo are with the FA 135).
Before someone asks, you could see aperture information on the exif data for the 50 cause i shorted the "a" pin on the body. (and by not completley mounting the lens it feels almost like i've an A 50 :cool:)

Have you cecked that the file is "MODSET.492" and not "MODSET.492.txt"?
(on windows known files extensions are hidden by default)
I've attached a working file, you've just to rename it.
Open a shell, go where you've saved the file then type:

I love it for portraits use, i'm still thinking if i really need something shorter or longer for this.
Seems that i was wrong...i should have asked if there's someone who doesn't like it for portraiture use.
As someone else stated it's good when used with extension tube.
My guest for today's lunch:
FA135 @F11 1/180s + 60mm extension tube (sorry for the dust spot...time to clean the sensor:o)

There's a nikon screen that has microprism over the entire screen, it is the "Type H" (i'm seraching for one) and come in 4 optimized variant dependig on lens FL and aperture.
There are also screen wich have only the central part with microprism instead of split image. (Ex. nikon "Type J")
But i'm talking about "old" screen for film camera that needed to be adapted to fit modern DSLR, i don't know if ther're "new" screens filled with microprism.

Currently i only own the M50 f1.4, i think i will never ever let go this lens away, some find it "soft" wide open, i do not agree with them (at least when i'm able to nail the focus :lol:).
ISO 100 f1.4 1/30s
ISO 140 f4 1/500s
Handheld M50 + ~50mm extension tube @f22 1/180 w on body flash and an home made diffuser
the diffuser itself (tobacco can filled with alluminium paper and 3 layer of backing paper on the front)
