I loved my Tokina AT-X pro, and it has been my number one regret in selling. Good luck with your sale, someone is going to get a very well built gem with this lens.

K-3 Durability

I took my K5II to Sunday River Ski Resort (in Newery, ME) to get some photos of the Red Bull Frozen Rush. It was 1 degree (-17c), the camera performed flawlessly for being outside over 5 hours. I shot 717 photos on one battery, even though the battery read empty for the majority of the day - they certainly don't like registering in the cold it seems. These cameras are amazing... I cannot wait to purchase the K3 (just have to wait until my wife forgets about the K5II from the pre-Christmas sale).

Time to upgrade... K-7 or K-01?

I would suggest holding off for a little bit (what's a few more months in the scheme of things) and waiting for a used K5 at a good price. The difference between the K5 and K7 is night and day, well worth the wait (and perhaps little bit extra). The K01 is nice, but before you buy it spend some time with it to see if it is really what you're looking for - there are some big differences over a traditional DSLR.

On a final note, I wouldn't recommend selling/trading/parting with your K10D - it's always nice to have a second body in case one has to go in for service.

Carrying Kr with Sigma 150-500

Carrying it vertically should alleviate any stress on the camera body. I use a Lowpro Toploader 75 with my K7 + 100-300 or 70-200 (with the hood extended). The bag is comfortable to use, and has room for filters/memory cards/brushes/extenders and so on.

Pelican 1560

I use a 1450 for some of my camera equipment, and a 1490 for my laptop. I highly recommend Pelican products and have tested their seals on more than one occasion (riding a motorcycle with my laptop case on multiple occasions in driving rain/going swimming in a pond with my camera case).

In the 1450, I can hold
- K7/grip
- Tokina 28-80 f2.8
- Pentax DA18-55 & DA50-200 (or Sigma 70-200 f2.8HSM II in that section)
- Sigma 100-300 f4
- Sigma 1.4 tc
- Pentax DA 40
- Assorted accessories (filters/batteries)
- Desiccant packs

The hardest part is finding the right case that has enough room and allows room for growth. Desiccant packs are necessary due to the nature of Pelican cases. Once you dry out the inside, it will stay dry (due to the valve by the handle), however when you open up the case you subject it to the humidity in that environment, and trap it in once you close it.

Dilemma

The DA 15 would probably work very well for your intentions, but I'd suggest going wider at first - this will give you the ability to crop photos easier, as well as correct for distortion without loosing much of the image. You can always stitch together photos as well (360 pano of a room). Check out that UWA review and see if the sigmas/tamrons meet your needs as well before you bite the bullet.

Off topic but on the ideas of this discussion:
If you come to an agreement with the realestate broker, make sure you have a contract and within the contract that he/she cannot discuss pricing with others pertaining to your contract. This will give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door, create a portfolio, and expand your business without worrying much about "well you charged ________ this much, why are you charging me 40% more?"

One thing to keep in mind as you start to undertake this aspect of photography is lighting - make sure you leave money in your budget (no matter which way you go for lens selection) to purchase some good lighting equipment.

4 Black Bear in a field of Lupins - it was 1 momma and 3 year-old cubs... still kicking myself. I had my camera in the morning in that location, about two hours later when bringing a group through (driving to a canopy tour start point) they walked across the road in front of us and into the field.

Hand holding ND10 Filter?
Posted By RallyDriver96

10 stops is a lot - depending on lighting and the intended subject, you could increase your ISO, use a larger F-stop and pull off a fairly fast shutter speed... but that defeats the purpose of the ND filter. The risk of hand holding a ND filter would be light leakage, since your hand may have to stay in place for quite a while (I am always shooting mine with bulb mode.. typically 2min or more).

Of course, my experience is limited.. I'm sure it's been done before with success - I just know I'm not capable of it.

Sounds like a replacement for the Kr - which that would be quite nice. If Pentax integrated the WR body design into all of its DSLR's, that would set them apart from the competition.

I'll agree with others that the K5 replacement should be looking at the new 24.3mp (?) that Sony has produced, as well as expanded video capabilities.

Lens comparison, what do you want to see?

It would be nice to see an older comparison of the fast 300mm. Tokina, Tamron adaptall, Sigma, Pentax 300/2.8 at some point. Or throwing in the new Sigma against the older ones?

They were sharing optical formulas, however there was some agreement that prevented Pentax from using some of the lenses that Tokina produces. I wish the 11-16mm would make its way over to Pentax, but I doubt it will as it hasn't in the last several years.

K-5 in the snow

Ah busted!

It does get addicting though taking advantage of the weather sealing and wr lenses. In October I was doing some long exposure shots of a brook by an old bridge abutment when it started to rain, when I decided to pack up after a few 6min exposures I hiked back up the hill toward my car and came across another photographer taking photos of the rainbow behind me, he was also using a Pentax. All the other photographers in the area were sitting in their cars waiting for the showers to pass.

After using the K7 in crap conditions, I seldom pull out the Panasonic bomb proof point and shoot (it's battery doesn't last as long as the one in the Pentax in bitter cold anywho).

Bah, I use my K-7 for accident investigations at a Ski area - last round was done in freezing rain for 2hrs with the 18-55mm wr lens mounted! A little snow/rain and cold weather only makes our cameras happier!

Glad to see you're using it the way it's meant to be used!

What is the item that was least expensive that helped the most?

I'd have to second (or fifth, whatever):

Rocket Blower - don't skimp out, get the big boy
Lens pen 3 pack
Pentax F Remote - I use this the most, but clean lenses, mirror and to some extent sensor have to out weigh the ability to use a remote. You can always do a 3sec timer to bypass the remote for landscapes.

K5

The f2.8 is nice, however with the loss of depth of field stopping down that much, you risk missing more photos. The K5 will allow you higher ISO performance, and will likely result in gaining more stops than the (2?) gained from shifting from the 55-300 to the 70-200. Keep that 70-200 on the wish list for later though, I love mine!

Mine also does that, I think what you are experiencing is a clutch mechanism that disengages the focus gears to prevent any damage, since the lens is quick shift compatible. Enjoy the lens, I love mine!

Well, I did it.... I just purchased...
Sigma 100-300 f4 apo ex dg from a forum member

And from B&H:
Sigma 1.4x ex dg apo TC
82mm Hoya UV(0) HMC
Lowepro Toploader Pro 75 AW
Lens Cleaning tools and a Large rocket blower.

I am all gitty, I can't wait till everything shows up (Wed/Thurs of next week) - bring on the snow baby, I'm ready to go play!

Thank you everyone for chiming in on this thread. The knowledge I have gained is invaluable. I still look forward to getting into the fast prime group (300/2.8 Tokina anyone?), however right now for my budget, I felt it was best to find a lens that best suited my vast needs (both wildlife and auto racing). The 100-300 (with a TC) was my dream lens setup, while I would have been happy with the new Bigmos, I feel like I have a bit superior setup (while not as much reach of course). Looks like the fast primes will have to wait till spring time.

I don't have experience with that TC, I haven't read up on it, but figured it would be a good match since it has the same designations as the lens. That was purely shooting from the hip, I haven't done any comparisons in that field yet for the lens.

I will add though, that the PF did clean up nicely - I am still watching the 360B on E-bay as I try to decide where to go!

Have you ever had any 'slop' in the mounting of the 60B? I've read in a few place of a rotational slop in the mount that can throw off the exposure by a stop in extreme situations...

Thanks,
Greg

Well this thread has had me bouncing all over the place with all the information I've received. I know if I am going for a prime lens, I can do the setup I mentioned earlier...
Lens: Tamron Adaptall 300mm f2.8 (60/360b)
Adaptor: KA mount
TC: 1.7x AF

Or:
Lens: Tokina 300mm f2.8 for pentax
TC: 1.7x AF

If I went with a Sigma option, I have:
Lens: Sigma 150-500 f5-6.3 APO DG HSM OS
Or
Lens: Sigma 100-300 f4 EX DG APO AF (No one seems to have talked about this option, is it because it is such a rare lens?)
TC: Sigma 1.4x APO EX DG

Now I do have a pretty strong flash, which with a "Better Beamer" flash extender (or something of the sort) should help a bit for lighting if I find the lens is too slow... Sounds like the 150-500 would be as I would need to stop it down to f11 for good photos at 500mm, the 100-300 sounds like a great lens even with a TC, but again if I want to stop it down more I could use the flash to add light...

My concern over a prime is that there isn't much open space here in northern NH, and as I had read on another thread "you can only back up so much" with hills, cliffs, boulders and the occasional 300 year old hemlock in the way of a shot...
