I would say old film is the first thing to blame. If the result remains the same with new film, then the camera has serious underexposure issue.

The "macro zone" label is always invisible if you turn the focus ring to 5' or further. However, it can always be seen if the focus ring is turned to the nearest focus distance (<1.5'). Just in case you may have missed: in addition to the apeture ring and focus ring, the lens has a third ring at the front end, which changes macro setting. It needs to be turned clockwise all the way down to allow normal focus.

Is it the version with macro? If yes, what is the "macro zone" setting on the lens (can be seen when turned to the nearest focus distance)? For normal focus, only the 1:7 mark should be visible.

You need to check the lens release button instead of the shutter release. If neither the lens release nor the AF/MF switch works some physical linkage must be broken. Unfortunately it can not be easily fixed because that would at least involve removing the lens mount.

Forum member Luma discussed focusing issue of Travor focus screen on K-x (see: Travor focusing screen - BE AWARE!). The main part of the observation is that the object in the center of the split-image circle will not appear at the center of the captured image. Instead it is located above the center. When AF is used, the center AF point doesn't agree with the perceived point of focus in the split-image circle. As a result, AF will be off if one tries to focus to an angled surface (such as the 45 degree focus chart) using the center of the circle as focus target.
Being curious how this happens, I took out the stock focus screen of K-x and did some measurement. Here is a drawing I made based on the result:
 
From the drawing we can see the K-x focus screen has edges that appear clearer than the main part and will be covered by the metal clip when installed. The edge at the upper side is wider than the one at the bottom. The center focus point is located at the center of the grounded area (shaded in the picture) and thus should be a little bit below the center of the whole screen (offset by 0.5mm).
As a comparison, the Travor screen (which I also have) has the split-image circle exactly at the center of the whole screen. When installed on K-x, the circle will appear off center. One can see that by just looking into the view finder.

Focus and recompose can also be done by assigning "Cancel AF" to the AF button. With this setting, the catch in focus is performed as normal (by pressing the shutter button only). To focus and recompose:
1. half press shutter
2. focus the lens
3. recompose
4. press and hold the AF button
5. press the shutter

I made a drawing of the K-x focus screen in observation of the off-center focus ring issue mentioned in this thread:

I just took a quick check of my camera with Travor screen. You are right, the split image circle is located higher than the actual image center. That explains the minor discrepancy between the split image and the focus confirmation when I take picture at an upward angle.

Well, the firmware is the most recent version (1.01.00.10). The batteries are eneloop, mostly full.
I believe it is some kind of glitch in the firmware (think about Microsoft blue screen). However, I doubt it is related to power management. It is not like the camera won't turn on as reported by others. On the contrary, the machine stays on but doesn't respond to any input.

Yesterday when I was shooting with K-x, suddenly the camera came to a freeze. None of the buttons was responsive. Even the power switch couldn't turn the machine off. I had to take out and reinstall the batteries to get it back to normal.
Does anyone have similar experience?

No, it rarely happens. Make sure you hear the "click" sound when mounting the lens.

Your choice will fall into one or more of the three categories:
(1) A P-TTL flash. It will work with the camera to determine proper flash output;
(2) An "auto" flash. The flash has a built-in meter and can decide the amount of flash output by itself;
(3) A "manual" flash. The flash allow you to manually set the output strength.
Those "dedicated" TTL-only (not P-TTL, without auto or manual setting) flashes won't work.

Try a quality card and if the symptom persists your camera has hardware problem. I don't think it is related to firmware because your situation is the first I have heard of.

The eye cup on K-x is actually easy to get off -- but not slide out. Use two fingers to hold one side and pry that side out. Do the same to the other side. No need to cut with scissors. Putting it back is easy, too.
