10 reasons I will not buy K new
Posted By Fontan

Despite the fact that the number of camera bodies i need is n + 1, n being the number of camera bodies the other guy has, I am not going to buy K new because;

1. I have too many cameras
2. I want to buy lenses (even though I have too many lenses)
3. APS-C, really?
4. I just added how much money I have spent on camera gears over the years
5. I don’t need it
6. I want to instead try Hasselblad 907X special edition I mean special edition did I mention it’s special edition?
7. My Tacoma has over 130,000 miles despite being 2017 model - I need a new truck
8. I want to buy a new wide format printer
9. Death to OVF (I use EVF for my M10 - that’s dumb)
10. Ok I’ll buy it

How about you guys?

FWIW in just 6 months I've gone from a "I'm happy with what I have so no thank you" to a very likely pre-orderer. The K-new is shaping up to be a compelling tool.

The oracle foresees an unlimited amount of gnashing of the teeth, stomping of the feet and hammering of little fists on the floor, because of modern "flagship" pricing.

There shall be childish price comparisons coming of MSRP versus old cameras' street price after multiple years.
There shall be endless thread injections about "it is not a flagship, because ...

  • it doesnt come out in pink

  • it doesnt have a dedicated video switch

  • the framerate is less than 20 FPS

  • it has no flippy screen

  • it has no 8k video

  • it has no amateur pop up flash

  • it has no USH-99 card slot, not even three of them

  • etc.

Streams of tears flowing down cheeks of armchair experts, all just because they don't have "flagship budgets".

I personally won't buy the K-new because there won't be a kit 8-400 mm F1.4 full frame lens bundled with it for $50 extra. ;) The issue is not me. It is them.

I'm waiting for actual specs, user reviews, & so forth & so on. Hopefully sometime this year. :D

It's pretty bold of them to claim that this is the most advanced APS-C DSLR camera. I guess we'll see once reviewers & users get their hands on it. I'll be damned if DPR proclaims this as the most amazing APS-C DSLR body EVAR! Hahaha! :p

One only knows that most review sites will slam this camera even further if it doesn't yield the proclaimed "expectancies".

Just Hold A Pentax” revisited*. It’s a long-term corporate value, but you have to be fairly old to know that - it was the advertising slogan in the sixties.

* the SV referenced in the linked article is silky smoth and has a sublime shutter. I will always hang onto both of mine and one or two Takumars just so I can take an SV out for a walk now and then.

Thanks all for the input. I ended up finding a Tamron 17-50 for a great price. If it ends up being a dodgy copy, I think I will sell it on and stretch for a Pentax 21mm.

Thanks to Adam and the moderators for making this a great site. Many people and companies are under pressure at this time. 2020 hasn't been an easy year.

I have owned Olympus equipment since the original OM1 and feel sorry for them. Don't want to see this happen to Pentax and I appreciate anything people can do here to help. Considered starting a thread setting a specific time for people to purchase a new piece of Pentax gear. Not sure where it should be posted. Even if everyone bought a T shirt, cap, wireless remote, etc. it would give Pentax/Ricoh a little economic stimulus. I just purchased the 100 year hotshoe cover and T shirt. Other equipment will follow.

Thanks,
barondla

To the PF community:

I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy in these unprecedented times (please check out our statement on the coronavirus if you haven't already). Like many other businesses, the camera industry has also suffered in the past months (e.g., low camera sales figures and more recently, the sale of the Olympus camera division, etc.). Consequently, even though it would seem that Pentax is coping quite well in comparison, we've been observing a steady rise in negative sentiment toward the Pentax brand throughout the community, which in some cases has led to unpleasant confrontations in forum threads and difficult decisions by the moderators.

In line with my mission of Pentax Forums being a friendly and inclusive community for Pentax users, we are going to be taking a series of steps to help minimize these kinds of unpleasantries going forward.
  • We are seeking additional moderators across multiple time zones to ensure that fewer issues that require moderator attention slip through the cracks (please visit this thread if interested)

  • To the extent possible, we will take a proactive approach to help members avoid issues, rather than directly stepping in to act on problematic post/threads

  • We will provide a greater degree of transparency regarding moderator actions in cases where a member disagrees with a decision that was made, even if the decision itself is not reversed

  • We will gather additional feedback from the community: please feel free to share your ideas in this thread (the moderators will not comment on specific incidents however), or contact the moderators privately

  • Although constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged, we will continue to maintain a firm stance against any form of bullying, trolling, or personal attacks.

To the latter point, I'd like to reiterate this statement that the moderation team posted several months ago:

QuoteQuote:

In recent weeks and months we have received feedback - primarily from new members, but a few established ones too - regarding unnecessarily harsh, dismissive, rude and/or aggressive responses, especially (but not only) when someone raises concerns, doubts or criticisms of the Pentax brand.

PentaxForums is a brand-specific enthusiast site, and most of us here are Pentax enthusiasts. New members with critical views of the brand have a responsibility to understand the dynamics of the community they're participating in and consider the effect of their posts, and we've updated our Welcome & Forum Rules sticky post to reflect this, with guidelines for new members. Even so, all of our members - new and old - have a responsibility to respect each other's opinions (even when we disagree), remain courteous and friendly at all times, keep an open mind, and avoid jumping to conclusions, making personal comments or name-calling (terms such as "fanboy" or "troll", for example). We each represent these forums whenever we post, and it's incumbent on us to present our community as welcoming, respectful, tolerant and helpful to all.

We might reasonably hope that our most established members in particular would take this responsibility to heart, to ensure the continued popularity and longevity of our community and the brands we all support.

When faced with a post where you feel the only option is to dismiss it or "shoot it down", please consider the wider effects of your response. If rules have been broken, report the post to a moderator using the "yellow triangle" report post feature (not by PM, please) and avoid further involvement in the discussion until a moderating decision has been made. Otherwise, please be mindful of the standards referred to above when responding.

Most of all, please strive to be friendly and respectful at all times. There is never just one way to offer (or counter) an opinion. However ill-conceived or inflammatory a post may seem, responding in kind does nothing to help our community and its reputation.

The moderating team will not hesitate to take appropriate action against members who consistently impact the forum atmosphere in a negative way.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and - as always - many thanks for your valued contribution to the forums!

And this last pic is a large male I saw later in the day. I know this 55-300mm PLM isn't the fastest lens, but when paired with something like the KP that does well in low light I haven't found it to be a major issue. This image was captured at ISO 20,000. Sure, it's a little noisy, but I think it's an acceptable shot.

Algonquin Park Raven, Mizzy Lake Trail
K-1 and DA 55-300 PLM

The park is finally open for hiking.

After walking for an hour or so, I made my way up to West Rose Lake, where the trail is an old rail bed, and there's a nice bench high above the water with a wetland on either side.

As I got close to the bench a Raven flew in and start jumping from the bench to the ground and back up again. As I got close he paused on the bench.

Hey, dude, this is a nice place to sit down for a snack.
2020-05-19-AP-forest-walk-crow-5 by Norm Head, on Flickr

So accepting his invitation, I sat down and got my snack out...

Hey dude, are you going to eat all of that food? You'll get fat.
2020-05-19-AP-forest-walk-crow-4 by Norm Head, on Flickr

It took him a while to figure out I was only going to put food where I liked the background. I'm sure he was wondering why I didn't just toss it to him like everyone else.

Dude, why is this food way over here?
"Just trying to get a picture with the lake as background instead of the sandy rail bed."
2020-05-19-AP-forest-walk-crow-3 by Norm Head, on Flickr

Once I was out of food, he didn't hang around long.

Miraculously, a family of 5 came along the trail, and he appeared again and did the same dance, hopping off and onto the bench as he'd done for me. I think he missed us tourists during the lockdown.

I first caught the photography bug in high school in the late 70's. My first camera was an old Kodak 126 cartridge and once I graduated I purchased a Pentax ME Super which I enjoyed for the next 20 years. I moved to the digital point and shoots after 2000, but missed the flexibility of the SLR. I have recently purchased a new Pentax K-70 and am excited about getting back into DSLR photography.

Program Plus, stepless shutter speeds?

Cool! :cool::cool::cool:

I did some more Google sleuthing and VERY careful combing through of available brochures and such and found a section of the Super Program brochure where both stepless shutter and stepless aperture (!) are claimed with notation that the display shows the nearest value to the one used. The official specifications in the same brochure are silent on this, but what the hay.

Well, we learn something new every day...I think. The same brochure has a photo of the aperture control block with an explanation of how optical detection of movement of the notched dial signals how far to move the aperture actuator. Those are discrete steps, not stepless...:hmm::hmm::hmm:

I take the shutter speed statement at face value.

I enjoyed my K-3ii also, but after using my K-1 and my KP (size and speed in an APS-c), I decided to sell my K-3ii. After 5 years of light use (less than 8,000 snaps), I sold it for $700 -- I was surprised that a 5 year old camera kept its value but the speed and improvements of the newer bodies kept the K-3ii at home and saw no reason to not let someone else enjoy the Pentax way.

I plan to buy the K-New soon after its introduced and I have a good selection of Primes as well as the several zooms including the DA* 11-18 I won last year. My trusty K-3 is still rolling along with around 30,000 or so shutter actuations and my K-50 is still working nicely too so I really don't need a new camera but I "WANT" one.:D The DA* 16-50 PLM should be a stellar quick focusing lens if the 55-300 PLM is any gauge. I've been plane spotting the past few days with the 18-55 PLM tracking Marine T-45Cs shooting approaches at approach speeds of around 140 mph or so and the K-3 and PLM combo was able to easily track the aircraft inbound until the buffer filled at medium continuous drive starting from a distance of about 1/2 to 3/4 mile. Shooting AFC and SEL9 there were very few misses and those were only caused by old shaky me and not the responsiveness of the K-3 and PLM. So if the K-New improves the AF I'll be a happy camper.

Thanks for everyone's responses, they were very informative. My wife decided to pick up my K5 and use it while she learns, she will be movi.g up to the K3 very soon. She just loves the 18-135, and is actually getting some good shots, I see she has an eye for photography, some of her shots are better than mine and I cannot be more proud of her. I am not being overbearing this time so she wont be overwhelmed and scared away from the art, instead I'm here to answer questions and guide her when she needs. She has discovered my 100mm lens for her macro work which is her favorite genre, so for now she will be using those two lenses, and over time she will venture about and start using all the rest of my lenses. I'm getting a K1 soon so my main shooters will be one of the K3s and the K1, she will have use of the other K3, the K5, and the K01. I am thrilled she is really taking to this, now we go out more so we can go shoot, it's great to find something that we both absolutely love doing, plus it makes it easier when I go buy more gear.....no arguement from her....lol
Herr is my main Pentax gear.....

I had a work colleague a few years ago who was very technically minded. We were both looking at purchasing DSLRs at the same time and spent a little time comparing notes. I was set on the top level Pentax at the time (K-7) as I had several K-mount lenses. He was undecided and compiled a vast series of spreadsheets detailing features/price/weight of several different brands and models. it was painful for me to watch him trying to make a decision. Anyway the big day came and he turned up with a brand new Nikon of some description. A week or so later, I politely inquired if he could bring in some images so we could compare results. I was rebuffed with the excuse he had not even put batteries in the camera as he had not finished reading the manual and did not want to risk blowing something up.

Yes it takes all types.
