Pentax 24-70 vs 28-105

Can't speak for the D AF 24-70mm, but the 28-105 is a fantastic value. I have tested it all through the zoom range at f5.6 and it's extremely sharp. It compares to the sharpness of the Limited 70mm and 77mm lens. Plus is small and compact making it great for a walk around lens.

The lens hood was extended on all shots that I took. The lens performed very well all the way through the f stop range. The one below was taken at f10 with very little vignetting. The shot of the horses above was at f3.5.

Very surprising results. Only slight vignetting from the 70mm Limited when shot as a FF lens on the K-1.

You will have to purchase a Cactus V6ii and load the firmware for Pentax in order to perform TTL function with the RF60. Note you will also have to up date the firmware for the RF60 too. The older V6 is not being updated.

Cactus set to Relase New Firmware the Cactus V6ii for Pentax

Cactus will be releasing new firmware for the Cactus V6ii for Pentax TTL with their RF60X and RF60 flashes shortly.

Personally have tested the beta software with both the RF60X and RF60 flashes. Plus tested the beta firmware using two Cactus V6ii with a Godox V860ii (N) mounted in the hot shoe of the camera Cactus V6ii and it worked flawlessly in both TTL and HSS to 1/8000 of a second.

Also tested it with a Godox AD600, AD360 and Elinchrom D-Lite 2 RX using two Cactus V6ii. One attached to the strobes with a sync cord to the strobe and the other in camera hot shoe. HSS synced to 1/8000 of the second in this mode. Of course there is no TTL in this mode, and stacking the triggers is not supported by Cactus. To control the power I carry along a Godox or Elinchrom trigger depending on the flash system in use.

Watch Cactus web site for the official release of firmware PEN.A.001, RF60 A01, RF60X A01 soon.

Yet another should I buy a K-1 thread

As the X-owner of the Sony A7Rii I would strongly recommend not buying it. The image quality is very good, but there are major drawbacks to the A7Rii. First, is the battery life. There is a reason it ships with two batteries. Second is a very complicated menu system. Third is the black out of the viewfinder when shooting in the continues mode. Definitely not a sports or action camera. Fourth, highlights are clipped in still shots. Fifth, the dynamic range and noise of the A7Rii is not equal to the K-1. Sixth, the new Sony G Master lens are large and make the balance of the camera lacking, and they are expensive. Seventh is the overheating issue.

Owning a Sony A7Rii to me was like owning a boat. The two best days of ownership are when you buy it and when you sell it.

Love the K-1. Probably the best landscape camera going.

I have owed it twice and still use it with the K-1 today. Probably the sharpest lens every made. IMHO is better than the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art Lens. Alyssa M | Eyes | D L Photographics | Flickr

K3-II + V6 II + XT32C + AD200 = HSS frustration :(

Godox change the sync priorities when they introduced the AD600. They are not the same as on the previous generation of Godox flashes, so the same may be true for the AD200. Never have been able to obtain HSS AD600 by stacking the Godox trigger in the hot shoe of the Cactus V6ii like I could with the AD360. The solution to obtaining HSS on the AD600 was simple. Use two Cactus V6ii. One in the hot shoe of the camera (TX Mode, Camera - Pentax and Flash - Nikon) and the other attached to the AD600 (RX and Flash set to Manual) by a sync cord. Tried ever flash setting on the Cactus transmitter, but none worked but the Nikon Flash setting. The power setting can't be controlled by the Cactus trigger and receiver, but the solution is to have your Godox trigger handy to decrease/increase your flashes power settings on the flash remotely. Try this solution on the AD200 and see if it works.

As a side note the Cactus V6ill will not pass the HSS sync though to the Godox trigger if the the firmware is above V1.1.006. Cactus has been advised of this but the have not corrected the problem to date.

Pentax HSS with Cactus V6ii and Godox Witstro AD360 Flash Light Speedlite

Just received the Cactus V6ii from Adorama. Mounted the V6II on my Pentax K3ii plus the new Godox XT-16 Wireless 2.4G Power Controller Flash Trigger on top of the Cactus V6ii and set the Camera System on the V6ii to Pentax and the Flash System to Nikon Auto on the V6ii. Turned on the HSS mode on the Godox 360 and set the camera shutter speed to 1/8000 of a second. Bingo it fired the flash. Check the beautiful picture of my bedroom light fixture and read the Metdata. LOL :)

Unfortunately the orginal Cactus V6ii I ordered from the Cactus website is lost in the mail between Hong Kong and Chicago.

CP+ 2017 Pentax Interview Questions

The three questions that come to mind for my are:
1. Do they plan to introduce a radio controlled trigger and receiver flash system for TTL and HSS.
2. Are there any plans to improve the auto focus tracking system and frame rate for sports and wildlife.
3. Also, what about adapting a fine tuning auto focus system similar to the Nikon D500.

I love my K-1, but I long for a D500 killer from Pentax (Ricoh) too.

Had the pleasure of working with a beautiful young lady last week, so I decided to try out some shots using HSS with the K-1+Cactus V6ii and the Godox 360. Three things I learned from the shoot were expose for the background, adjust the power of the flash to match the back ground exposure and use contrast detection AF (live view).

All photos shot wtih FA* 85mm f1.4.

Help Deciding New Camera (K-3ii, K-1 or Sony!)

I would strongly recommend AGAINST the Sony. I made the mistake of purchasing a Sony A7Rii. The interface on the A7Rii is not user friendly and the battery life very shot. The new G Master lens are as big as any DSLR lens, so there is no weight savings and they make the camera bigger than many DSLRs. The there is the atrocious view finder. When shooting fast moving subjects the live view just can't keep up. I sold it and two Zeiss lens after 891 shutter actuations and purchase the K-1.

Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 on the K-1

The Tamron 70-200 f2.8 is the only non Pentax branded lens in my collections. In my opinion it a very good overall lens. It is very sharp. The major draw back is that it's slow focusing and some time hunts in low contrast situations. It's not good for fast action, but it's very good for portrait work with the exception of the focus breathing (it's not a full 200mm when focusing on close subjects). However, focus breathing is common to most 70-200mm lens with the exception of Canon 70-200 f2.8. If you can live with the slower performance of the Tamron it's well worth the cost saving of the other options for the K-1.

The 28-105 is super sharp all the way through the range at f5.6. It is very lightweight and compact making it an excellent walk around lens.

Tony Northrup - K-1 Review
Posted By fwbigd

Overall the review is fairly accurate. There are three points that I disagree with and those are the lack of lens, portraits shooting and tethering. First, the FA* lens work beautiful on the K-1 and are fairly inexpensive. The FA* 85mm f1.4 is a fantastic portrait lens and renders excellent sharpness and color.

Second, it comes down to style when shooting portraits. Tony by his on admission is a machine gun shoot. He may take 50 shots to get one or 2 good images. Me being a old film shoot were you had a maximum of 36 shots before have to reload and not seeing the image until they were processed you had better get it right before you pushed the shutter. Therefore, I still only use the center focus point and recompose before pressing the shutter all the way down. I could care less if Canon, Nikon and Sony have more focus point. As a matter of fact I sold a Sony A7RII after a 891 shutter actuations because it didn't fit my style when shooting portraits.

Third, I take his comment about tether with a grain of salt. The need to see an instant review on the a big screen in second is just another crutch for shot gun shooters in my opinion. Tethering in Lightroom works for me, but my goal it to do it right before pressing the shutter.

He is 100% accurate about the K-1 and moving objects. It is down right dismal. The frame rate and the buffer is entirely to slow. If I shot action I use my K-3ii. I can fire of 19 raw and jpeg shots with the K-3 and get 19 in focus shot for it. When the Canon 7D Mark II came out all many of the reviews mentioned K-3 as the standard to compare it too. Having never shot with the Nikon D500 I have no point of reference, but I wouldn't trade the K-3ii for the additional cost of the Canon 7D Mark II or Nikon D500.

Bottom line Tony is a Canon shooter. The K-1 doesn't fit his style of shooting for every occasion and that fine, but for my style of shooting the K-1 is the best camera I have ever shot with period.
