Exactly.
And if they do allow it, you'll be able to re-shoot or even sit back and enjoy the actual recital itself, though I think it's in poor taste to take photos during an actual performance unless you're being paid by the school or company... but that last bit is from someone with persnickety audience expectations.

As far as the finished product goes, I'd say try not to put the bird in the middle of the frame unless there's something intriguing to exploit by that type of placement.

I think the 2nd attempt is maybe a step in the wrong direction, only because the substrate of the sign seems too dark to me wherever there isn't any type.
You said you did a shadows adjustment, but I think it needs to be much more subtle. In fact, any shadows in the sign itself would likely be in the teeny tiny cracks on the sign or towards the bottom and where it seems battered. Generally speaking, the surface of the sign seems to be hit with an overall equal amount of light.
I think the sign itself is the strongest element here and should be cropped heavily, whereas the window or background wall are distracting from the very cool sign.

I think everyone has posted nice comments. I've learned a ton just seeing what works and doesn't work from those more experiencedthan me in these forums, and it seems you take that to heart as well.
One thing I would add that as far as showing your work, it's really nice to do that in a live classroom, in person. As a design student (albeit a distantly related field), I find that a huge component of my development is through critiques, and that's something that just doesn't feel the same through an online course (which is just ok, not necessarily bad). Listening to other artists and designers speak, it seems they share a lot of the same insecurities that others face as artists, and that's something we have to face at some point in order to grow.
Keep on keepin' on.

Wonderful variation in tone. I'd be happy looking at it rotated any which way.

I guess regardless of our stances, we're human at the end of the day and have to deal with things like runny noses.
Definitely tried to make an effort to convey different groups and not just the message of the main participants.

I started with the 16-45 and find myself not wanting to use it now that I have a nice FA 50. I find it hard to get good results with the former, mostly because I can't compensate for my inconsistent technique without faster glass.

Yeah, but then all the other shooters are in the photos!
The police video unit I talked to in LA was amazed by all the cameras everyone had out. Glad you had a good experience.

Decided to see what the buzz was all about. It's a lot less awkward getting shots of people than I'm used to!
Quick and dirty remix below. |

All good. Are those spider-web thin cracks that we start to see on the 2nd attempt? I'd totally try to exploit that feature, especially as it would complement the degradation of the rusted metal.

Nice-- what was the atmosphere like?
I might try to get some shots of the event in Los Angeles

I just wonder if the greenery and roof in the background is necessary or not; do you think they help to communicate windows?
Just food for thought. Nice concept overall.

Did some photos of this flower and found that the red was clipped in many of them, so I decided to have a go at something on the abstract side of things.
Hope you like. |

Hi all-- looking for any criticisms you have lying around. Took this between Nebraska and Colorado on a road-trip last summer. Forgot to watch out for all the weeds that cling to clothes when you step in all the wildflowers.
Thanks! |

Very nice work.
Did you interact with anyone here at all or did they just walk by and have to deal with getting snapped? Just curious what it's like there in the moment!

Just picked up a DA 55-300 and a refurb FA 50; first got a handle on the former.
And holy crap, using a telephoto confirmed any deficiencies I thought I had with steady hands. Think I found a Western Fence Lizard while working with this lens for the first time! Wish I had picked it up-- I read their bellies are bluish underneath.

I think it would read "blood orange juice". Their deal is to cook with ingredients that are selling in the nearby area.

Lots of tasty things in trucks around these parts. And I'm always a sucker for chalkboard signs, even if this one isn't necessarily a work of art. |
