Grandchildren will also involve sports events so that will require some type of telephoto lens.

I currently have the lens kit 18-55 but seems like that does not always reach far enough.

My interests are portrait and family type pictures including grandchildren. Action and low light shots come into play quite often. I am thinking about the SMC P DA 50-300 telephoto lens.
Money is always a consideration but if there is another lens that might better suit my interests I would seriously take a look at that lens before I order the lens mentioned above.

Thanks for all the information. The 28-70mm lens is a tokina SD , 52 and one flash is P536TLC5. Not finding a brand on the 70-200mm. with cable to use with a tripod. Will continue to research before buying.

New to SLR but I now own a Pentax K-X. Friend has Pentax K-1000 film camera with 28-70 3.5/4.8 lens and 70-200 4.0/5.6 also 2 flashes and some filters he wants to sell for $100. Would this be something to consider?
