Anyone use a Nikon F or S mount to Pentax K mount adapter for manual or AF/AE lenses?

Awesome!

I mostly used mine on my K-5 but I have used it a couple times on my K-1 with pretty good success. I have a surplus of 105mm (Super Tak and Lester A Dine as well as the Nikkor) so I don't use it as much as I might otherwise.

CP+ 2019 - New lens roadmap - DA Standard Zoom added - Fish-Eye Zoom removed

I personally am devastated by the fisheye coming off the roadmap. Seriously. Well, devastated in a photographic sense, at least. It's been the lens I've been looking forward to.

I have been really hoping we'd see a Pentax fisheye zoom with weather sealing, much improved IQ over the 10-17, and an odd number of aperture blades. The 10-17 was great, but six blades meant somewhat boring starbursts and there was a whole lotta PF even for an APS fisheye.

I've been shooting with the Samyang 12mm fisheye on my K-1 for close to 2.5 years now (see thread here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/332449-sam...ntax-mount.htm - plus plenty of shots with it on Flickr and elsewhere), and while it's very very good, I would love to swap it for a Pentax one. F2.8 at the wide end, hopefully. The Samyang has terrific IQ, very very little PF, and seven blade, so great starbursts, but I want all-weather and I would prefer the traditional fisheye look over the Samyang's stereographic imaging.

No adapter needed for old Nikkor 105mm F2.5, mine mounts directly onto my Pentax bodies, just crooked, and not locked but snug enough that I'm not concerned about it falling off.

Presumably, early third-party lenses should mount the same way?

Lots of discussions in an existing thread here. Some pics I've taken with it are on this page:

You'll just have to go back. :) It was really fascinating. Unfortunately, my wife couldn't make it on that trip; I wish she could since she was lucky enough to go to Space Camp when she was young, so it would be a return for her.

Those rockets just call out for a fisheye, like the skyscrapers in NYC...

The Space Shuttle (actually a test replica) makes for an interesting fisheye subject, too. Test replica or not, I still get choked up when I see a shuttle in person.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. I do like vertical fisheyes too, they can really bend reality even more than landscape ones. Like this - this is actually a complete in-line Saturn V rocket with a section removed so you can see more, but the picture makes it look like they point in totally different directions.

Vertical can also give an almost vertigo-like converging lines appearance, too!

The Samyang 12mm is not too big, I don't think. It is fairly wide, and it is remarkably easy to get one's fingertips in the corner of the picture! I seem to find that happening a lot more with the Samyang than my old 10-17mm.

The 10-17mm is remarkably small, though. I remember comparing it to someone's Sigma 15mm fisheye a number of years ago and being amazed at the difference in size. I will give up a little bit of size for better PF control and the extra aperture blades!

What's that, you want excuses to buy another fisheye? :)

My dream lens is a FF version of the 10-17mm, but weatersealed, with an odd number of aperture blades (for starbursts!), and of course, much better control of PF - the 10-17mm really suffers in that regard. The Samyang has those much, much more under control. They do have a FF fisheye on the roadmap, I hope it'll have those features - if so, the Samyang will quickly go up for sale! But for now...

Ahh, someone else with the Samyang 12mm... I usually feel like I'm the only one! :) I'm still not convinced that I wouldn't prefer a "traditional" fisheye - I like the distortion, thank you - but it is a very nice lens and it's great to be able to get good starbursts. Here's a few of it on my K-1:

Sorry, I just saw this and I wrote a longer reply in a PM - I don't want to hijack the sale thread - suffice to say, head over to the Nikkor Lens Club thread for more info.

Regarding the lens for sale - just for clarification for whoever buys it - with the adapted mount, does it meter like an M or an M42 lens? They're not the same (as you probably know.)

With an M, the camera can stop it down but doesn't know what aperture you're using, so has to stop down to meter. You have to go in Manual mode and press the Green button for the camera to manually stop it down.
With M42s, the camera is not capable of stopping it down and you are seeing the stopped-down image already, so the camera meters just fine without doing anything special in Av mode (and if you're in Program, it'll Hyperprogram to Av automatically.) You get a dimmer viewfinder but more flexibility.

I prefer the M42 way myself - I'd rather manually turn the aperture brighter for focusing then close it to where I want it than deal with manual mode and green button, and that's how my Nikkor 105mm with stock mount behaves.

I use a Nikkor 105mm F2.5 on my Pentax bodies sometimes; it usually fits upside-down reasonably tightly with the stock Nikon mount. (Same with a few other older Nikkors.) I really like the lens, I'm a little ashamed to say that I use it a lot more than my Takumar 105mm. :)

I think I prefer the fishy version of the stream picture, but I'm odd that way.

Here's a couple more from the K-1 and Samyang 12mm. Handheld; they'd be better with a tripod but the family was moving fairly quickly. :)

It's worth pointing out that yours has the "A" auto-aperture setting, not all did. At one point, I had both. Obviously the "A" helps the value. I sold my "A" version quite a while ago, I kind of wish I still had it now that I have the K-1, it was a nice lens and a lot lighter/smaller than a 70-200 F2.8. I am currently trying to unload my non-A version; it's such a pain not having that setting. :) GLWS.

Dead thread... but I love my Auto Takumar 35mm F3.5! There's just something about the look of it that I like.

On a K20D...

The five blades can also make a nice starburst. On a K-5.

And almost-a-self-portrait, on a K-3...

I haven't done much with it yet on the K-1 but I do plan on it!

It's something, all right. I'm not sure how I feel about that picture but it is something you couldn't do with a regular lens. :)

QuoteQuote:

I get that there are ways to decrease some kinds of distortion with fisheye lenses, though that may often be by increasing the distortion of something else by choice of framing, But if someone complains about distortion when using a fisheye lens, isn't that like a diner saying that this or that type of fish tastes too "fishy." (Does anyone say a steak tastes too beefy?)

I get of course that their might be too much fisheye distortion for the way one wants to capture a subject. I get that different full-frame fisheye lenses might offer choices of how much and what kind of distortion to use, and making those lens choices are about creative decisions serving a picture.

But isn't the typical fisheye lens, by definition, a tool of distortion, imposing on the world, or drawing out from the world around us a kind of plasticity, a kind of previously unseen potential for change and movement? And don't people who want to flaunt their fisheye photos love that about the fisheye lens type?

Or is there something I am completely missing when people talk about de-fishing images or reducing the distortion like it's something to avoid?

Some people just don't like the fishy look (no account for taste, I know! :) ) but a defished fisheye shot can often be as wide or wider than a rectilinear UWA lens... and yet I want more fishiness! I love the distorted look, different than we'd see with our own eyes, and I love how the slightest change in perspective can make for a very different photo with a fisheye.

I also like that you can do really different things to create different "looks", like this shot where there's a bunch cropped off the bottom, putting what's normally in the center at the bottom of the image: (10-17mm on my old K-7)

It's the centers that are different, I think; I'll have to get some comparisons one of these days, like I said.

I guess I'm using "lens flare" in the video game/JJ Abrams definition - yes, the ghosting. The flare around bright lights themselves isn't bad. But there's definitely more ghosting that I'd expect from a Pentax OEM lens.

Yes, but I'm one of those strange people who doesn't care so much about accurate landscapes; I want fishiness in my fisheye lens. I'm not a particular fan of UWA lenses and I feel like Samyang is trying to make the fisheye more UWA-friendly, which is not what I'm after. I'll be curious to see Pentax's upcoming FF fisheye zoom and how it compares to see if I'll be upgrading to it or not. I probably will sooner or later; I have been wanting a weathersealed fisheye for years!

In the meantime, I do still like the Samyang 12mm and time will tell if I find myself liking its projection more or less. If I get really fired up, I'll do some comparison shots between it and my other FF fisheye (Zenitar 16mm) one of these days.

This is probably as suitable as anywhere. :) So far, I mostly really like the Samyang 12mm... the starbursts are way better than on the usual 6-blade aperture fisheyes, but there's a lot of flare. You can see some of it in the picture with the fountain in the foreground. It could really benefit from some Pentax SMC or HD coating. :) The sharpness is very good, the purple fringing is quite low - far less than on the 10-17mm, and contrast seems fine - I haven't really paid attention specifically but haven't yet felt like it's been a problem at all. I feel like it could use a little more distortion but it's not bad and I haven't gotten motivated enough to try to create a lens profile to make it more fishy, like a traditional fisheye.

I saw that a used one recently sold on eBay for really cheap - someone got a great deal. :)

A few more with the K-1 and Samyang 12mm...

Despite the "stereographic" setup, there is still a good bit of distortion with the Samyang, which is a good thing in my eyes. This shot has an example of the many-pointed starbursts that you can get with it that you just can't get with the current Pentax fisheyes... hopefully their upcoming FF fisheye zoom will be able to.

I'd apologize for hijacking but this helps keep the ad at the top. :)

Yeah, I assume mine was a later lens, and has the lens cap you described:

Here's the hood:

I wouldn't feel too bad about missing the hood; it was a pain because it clipped into the filter threads, so you couldn't keep it attached to the lens when the cap was on, so it would just bounce around in the camera bag or at the least, be one more thing to carry around. Not quite "perfect" in my mind. :) I only sold mine to sweeten a deal on my K-3 that I sold - it was my only prime for years and still worked well, but there was an offer on the table, so it didn't make sense to keep it when the 31mm Limited was sitting next to it. ;)

Someone should definitely buy this lens, it looks to be in pretty amazing physical condition and they're great lenses and small and light.

Nice lens, I just sold mine (without advertising) that I had bought new 25-some years ago, with some reluctance! I don't remember getting a case with mine but mine did come with a petal lens hood specifically for that lens. My manual and lens cap are different, too. Apparently there were some changes in packaging over the years; mine was also a Mini-Wide II with "A" setting so the lens itself is most likely the same. Regardless, a very solid and sharp 28mm lens; I used it for most of the photos of lenses on my selling page. Good luck with the sale!
