K-x focusing issues about to give up

Oh man, thank you for the responses.

I think I am about ready to get a point and shoot to be able to get better pics then my smart phone, but without the bulk of a slr. Kind of a shame. Ultimately I think the focus issues is what has made my experiences shooting with the K-x not as rewarding as I had hoped. Im pretty teched out, don't feel like fussing with the focus screen, turns out that not having focus indicators is a big factor, not being able to manually focus, can't really tell if it is a good focused shot until its on the computer; all leads up to a murky photographic experience. I have this sweet tameron lens, could get a newer pentax body, with focus indicators, but presently thinking that if I had a smaller camera I would bring it a lot more often then I do with the K-x. Wish I could manually focus like in the old days, but without trusting the split screen, I just can't tell what is going on. Perhaps when if I get in the mood at another time I'll try to tackle shimming the screen.

K-x focusing issues about to give up

Hi,
I am frustrated focusing my K-x. I just can't tell if it is in focus or not. I added a split screen to help me focus but when the auto focus says it is correct, the split screen is off. I am about to give up on it which is a shame, I have a sweet Tameron 28-75 to go with it. Don't suppose anyone here can help me.

Thank you for the reply. Following another thread I got an old fashioned style split/prism focus screen and am much happier. I either focus manually or when auto focusing with this set up I am much more aware of what is going on.

Sorry to hear that Magkelly.

Well, I got it in and have to say it seems pretty cool! Looking forwards to shooting awhile in manual and see how it goes. Put on my old school Pentax 50mm prime, the old ones sure do have a nicer focusing ring, but will shoot with my modern Tameron as well and see how it goes.

Doing a quick comparison, cant notice much of a difference in screen brightness and the splitscreen between my kx and 30 year old Fujica.

Well I just got the splits screen. I hear what your saying about manual focusing these days, but I am still looking forwards to giving it a shot. I love the control of it. Now I just have to get it in without screwing anything up!

Was just playing with my 30 year old Fujica. Manual focus is the way for me! Way faster and more accurate. I will definitely get a split screen Gibby, and will def review the default fstop and iso setting Newarts.

I am surprised how hard it can be to get the shot that I want. Catching that special fleeting moment is special when it happens. In a funny kind of way I think I was more successful back with 35mm, and was much more selective about taking a pic, but maybe that is somewhat in my mind.

Here is a classic example. Great moment gone to waste. Generally I love going dslr and dont want to go back. Guess saying that I shoot point and shoot is a bit of an exaduration, but when shooting kids they just are very quick! I have been doing center spot only and recompose for a while now, so that I get a little miffed when it still happens.

I tried manual focus for a while, but found it quite difficult. If it was possible to get the focus helpers like split screen from the old days, then I would be happy to stick with manual focus.

Have owned a Kx for more then a year now. My first dslr. Thought I would be Ok about the lack of focus indicators, but have to say that at this point I am really disappointed with it. I use it basically as a fast point and shoot for family shots. And have finally gotten fed up with all the great shots except that the back ground is sharp and the subject is not. Any suggestions? Am not in the position to change cameras. I have been going with the center point focusing and then composing the shot, but it doesnt seem to really help. Also when someone else takes a shot I have to explain all that. Thank you for any input.

I could be having too great expectations and giving them too hard of an eye, but they seem just slightly off. When it goes spot on, it is just the best.

If you could would love to see some of the shots your taking Bob just for the curiosity of seeing how your lense is doing. Casual shots ok I wont judge them!

Sounds like we're in the same boat Bob! These are big purchases for both of us! To be sure I just shot some more infinity with manual focus shots and the correct focus is definitely a little back from the end of the focus ring. Does anyone know if this is OK? I have done most of my photography pre AF and back then this never would be the case. Infinity focus was always on many different lenses the end of the focus ring.

Don't know, mine feels fine. General feeling is that too stiff is better then too loose. Need to take some more shots but when manual focusing it really seemed that when focus is on infinity the shot is blurry, and that the actual infinity focus is a little backed off from turning the ring all the way. Anyone ever experience this?

Here are some more shots. Again some are coming out great, some not, feels good to be shooting more. Will try focusing on a different distance object then refocusing on subject.

The dog photo another impromptu shot is what inspired me to keep this lense! Al catraz shot is an off shot example, dont know why it is off. The photo of my kids and the Panda, my older son is slightly out of focus and the kid to his left with the hat, back to camera is spot on focus.

The lack of focus indicators is starting bug me after all about the kx, but I am trying to get more manual and engaged in the process anyway.

Unrealistic expectations and subject or camera movement prob does come into play sometimes. It seems sometimes that my wife's point and shoot panasonic has better anti-shake stabilization.

That being said I don't want to be too humble, I do know what I like and I do have a sharp eye!

Realized I should take some more shots with focus on infinity to make sure long distance is not a problem.

Thank you for all the input what a great web site!

When it all comes together I am LOVING it! Don't want to go back to the kit.

My sister in law took a class on photography and they had everyone in the class take all shots with manual focus. I love that idea, but it is not so easy these days without the focus helpers of yesterday (like split screen), also the focus ring on af lens these days has too narrow a range of movement. I do try to tune in to what the af is doing before taking the shot.

Hope I am not being overly optimistic, but I sure would like to not have to deal with taking the lense back and exchanging it. Hopefully the lense is fine and I need to improve my technique. I'll try going back to more focus spots and try to make sure what I want is in focus before taking the shot.

Yes I went ahead and put on the UV filter basically for less stress and because when I do have to clean it less stress again. Im not yet at the level where I am going to be able to tell the difference between using a filter or not.

wow that is an amazing shot of the water drop!

My new Tammy 28-75 is taking some great shots just like I had hoped for, but it is inconsistent. A while ago I switched my focus area to a center spot then I recomposition because I was having similar probls with the kit lense and the kx doesnt have focus indicators.

Any suggestions? sometimes they are georgeous, sometimes rather blurry and I dont see any rhyme or reason to it. Tried some shots at a small aperature and was disappointed. Part of the reason then was that it was in full sun which I know can be difficult.

Also was does front loading mean in reference to a lense? How do I check it? Guess I should be a little more systematic, shooting the whole range of focal points and the whole range of f stops.

Thinking three shots each at 28mm, mid range, and 75mm. One at 2.8, next at mid f stop, and the third at the smallest f stop.

Thank you for any input.
